CATALOG DESCRIPTION An examination of the relationship between the state adopted curriculum, the Learner-Centered Proficiencies and best practices. Topics include: the lesson cycle, the inquiry model of learning, use of technology, and other resources to plan, deliver and assess instruction; the role of assessment in guided learning and managing a classroom. A micro-teaching lab and documentation of field experiences are required. COURSE UNDERSTANDINGS

Failure to submit either the request form and/or passing practice exam scores at this time will delay testing approval resulting in less time for you to take and pass the actual TExES examinations. Remember, you must have passed TExES exam scores posted by the date of your Clinical Teacher Orientation to be eligible to clinical teach. Core Subjects exams must show “Passing” for each subject area and multiple Certify Teacher score reports can be submitted. EC-12 All Level Special Education is also considered a Content Exam. A delay in taking PDIII does NOT release you from submitting request forms this semester.

Clinical Teaching Applications All students will submit their clinical teaching applications no later than Monday, Sept. 30, 2019 by 5pm. Any student who has not submitted his/her application by this date will NOT be able to complete their upcoming clinical teaching semester. Instructions and additional information will be given at the mandatory meeting(s) scheduled for: 9/9 @ 3pm-5pm, 9/10 @ 1pm-3pm, 9/12 @ 9:30am-11:30am, or 9/13 @ 10:30am-12:30p in Math 125.

FIELD EXPERIENCE Students MUST successfully complete a minimum of 20 hours (10 visits – 2 hours each) of field experience and turn in all required documentation in order to pass this course. Failure to complete and correctly document field experience hours in your official placement will result in failure of the course.

Grading:Semester grades will be awarded based on the following point system (final grades are not rounded): A = 970 - 873 pointsB = 872 - 776 pointsC = 775 - 679 pointsD = 678 - 582 pointsF = 581 points and below

Beginning in Fall 2015, Tarleton will begin differentiating between a failed grade in a class because a student never attended (F0 grade), stopped attending at some point in the semester (FX grade), or because the student did not pass the course (F) but attended the entire semester. These grades will be noted on the official transcript. Stopping or never attending class can result in the student having to return aid monies received. • Graded work and feedback will be returned to students within one week after the respective due date(s).

• Any work not turned in by the date due will not be accepted – THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

• Two tardies will be counted as an absence. A tardy is defined as entering the classroom once the instructor has begun the class session at the scheduled time.

• Students who arrive after the first 30 minutes of class will be counted absent.• Any absence will affect your grade, regardless of the cause for the absence. Your

commitment to becoming the best teacher possible includes regular, timely attendance, and participation. Work must be turned in via email or Canvas on time, even in the case of an absence, or receive a zero for that assignment.

Professionalism

1. You are responsible for all assigned reading material. Read all material carefully and be prepared to question and discuss the ramifications. *You need to maintain at least a 2.75 overall GPA in your professional development classes. Teaching is communicating. All work will be scrutinized for substance (content) and delivery (grammar, etc.).

2. You are expected to abide by the attendance policy and notify the teacher in case of any absence or tardy.

3. You are required to have and wear your Tarleton State University nametag at all field experience locations.

4. Cellphones MUST BE turned off prior to entering the classroom. Use of cellphones during class will result in a loss of professionalism points. If you have an emergency that requires you to keep your phone out on your desk, please notify the instructor before class starts.

5. Professionalism includes participation in class and in discussion boards and group assignments, promptness, ability to work with others, and turning in all work completed and on time.

6. Behaviors that will cause deduction of professionalism points include, but are not limited to, the following: sleeping, lying down in class, continuous talking when not appropriate, arguing with anyone in a disrespectful manner, refusal to work within a group, internet shopping, texting, etc. THERE WILL BE NO “WARNINGS” OR CORRECTION DURING CLASS. It is assumed that, as a future professional educator, you are familiar with professional behavior. If you have any questions as to what constitutes professional behavior, please ask me or another professor within this department.

7. Furthermore, ANY activity brought to the attention of the university, the college, or the program that calls into question your credibility, your timeliness, your commitment to the program, your placement, or the district you are servicing, will result in an IMMEDIATE investigation that could result in failure of the course and dismissal from the teaching program.

9. The professor reserves the right to modify or change the syllabus and course requirements in response to the emerging needs of the students.

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS ● Assignments must be final copy, computer generated, and printed, double-spaced when appropriate, and use Times New Roman fonts in sizes 12. ISTE 1.2• A header must be placed in the upper left hand corner of every page and

include the student’s name, section # and assignment title. This applies to all assignments.

• Power Point or other presentation technology is required for all of the micro teach lessons. ISTE 1.2.2

• Email will be used in a variety of ways; to contact the professor outside of class, for assignments, and for pop quizzes. Your Tarleton email is your official email and should be checked DAILY.

• The student will be expected to use the Internet to search for resources related to teaching. ISTE 1.2.3

ACADEMIC HONESTY Tarleton State University expects its students to maintain high standards in personal and scholarly conduct. Students guilty of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary action. OBSERVATION OF A RELIGIOUS HOLY DAY Texas House Bill 256 requires institutions of higher education to excuse a student from attending classes or other required activities, including examinations, for the observance of a religious holy day. The student shall also be excused for time necessary to travel. An institution may not penalize the student for the absence and allows the student to take an exam or complete an assignment from which the student is excused. No prior notification to the instructor is required.

EDUC 3330 Effective TeachingFALL 2019

Verification of Understanding

The following points are part of the syllabus. The bulleted list below forms key points that the student must understand about EDCU 3330.

✓ Participation is based on class discussion and activities, punctuality, and professionalism. Merely being physically present in class does not qualify as attendance/participation. You must be actively engaged with the lesson to receive credit.

✓ Attendance is required. It is your responsibility to sign the roll sheet at the beginning of each class. Please be prompt. Two tardies will result in an absence. Students who arrive after the first 30 minutes of class will be counted absent. See ATTENDANCE POLICY in this syllabus for full details. Any absence results in a loss of that week’s assigned professionalism points.

✓ Cell phone/electronics: Cell phones, text messages, and checking your cell phone, email, and text messages or any other form of social networking which do not support course instruction during class are all strictly PROHIBITED and will result in loss of professionalism and may result in a lower grade for the course. Come to class prepared to focus on class. Violations may result in being asked to leave the class, withdraw from the course and/or failure of course. If there is a potential rising emergency, then prior notice must be made known to me before class starts and your phone set to vibrate.

✓ Late work is not accepted. All assignments are due by the posted due dates. In the case of an absence, assignments must be submitted Canvas or Canvas email by 11:59 pm on the due date. All assignments must be completed and turned in in order to pass the course. Failure to complete and submit your mid-term project or final course project on time will result in failure of the course. There are no exceptions.

✓ A Canvas ticket is the only acceptable form of documentation for technology issues.

✓ I understand my Tarleton email is the primary means of communication and should be checked daily.
