LEAD Greater Williamsburg, formerly Leadership Historic Triangle, is a community immersion program, sponsored by the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance, that provides opportunities for recognized and emergent leaders to collaborate on issues of importance to the region. The program has graduated over 400 diverse and accomplished individuals, after successful completion of an intensive eight-month program consisting of educational sessions, tours, and candid conversations with community leaders.

Graduates complete their experience having gained a deeper appreciation for their community in areas such as education, public safety, health and human services, economic drivers, environmental sustainability, local and state government, workforce development, and the military. Alumni develop lasting personal relationships, gain an invaluable professional network, and continue to support their community through service as elected officials, local government planning commissioners, and non-profit board members.

What a delight it is to be part of such an incredible organization as LEAD Greater Williamsburg. It is an honor to serve alongside the amazing board members who are giving dedicated leadership to the regional awareness and community service that LEAD

provides. This being our 25th anniversary, no doubt Greater Williamsburg is a much better place as over 400 leaders have graduated from this program with a commitment to give back in such sacrificial ways. This year’s class project - Williamsburg Kind - is just one of many examples of how LEAD is providing tremendous value to Greater Williamsburg. I am so proud of the achievement of this particular class.

CLASS PROJECT

The goal of WMBGkind was to inspire Greater Williamsburg to become the next Community of Kindness — and it worked! With the help of educators, elected officials, small businesses, corporations, and LEAD alum—the 2019 class proved kindness really can (and does) bring people together. Through strong community engagement efforts, traditional media coverage, and a powerful social media strategy, the campaign reached thousands of people, not just on the Virginia Peninsula, but all across Hampton Roads.

THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN, WITH THE HELP OF WMBGKIND STAKEHOLDERS, THE CLASS OF 2019:

• Collected more than 300 dresses for the Peninsula’s inaugural Queen in a Dress program

• Delivered 559 pounds of food to Virginia Peninsula Foodbank

• Handmade more than 200 get well cards for patients at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center

• Surprised 115 deputies at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s office with free Chick-fil-A sandwiches

• Delivered food, cards, and hugs to five different agencies on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

• Passed out roses to strangers on DoG Street for Valentine’s Day

• Significantly reduced the student lunch debt in WJCC schools

• Read to students at Head Start and Bright Beginnings during Read Across America Week

• Participated in a “Choose Kindness” art event and “Great Kindness Challenge” for local students
