When 4 first became a leader, 4 had no clue what 4 was doing#
4 was a high school student and had "ust been elected student body president# 4 had served as
class president and in a few other positions, but there didnt seem to be a lot of responsibility that
stretched me at that point# As president of the study body, now a senior, 4 quickly realized lots ofstudents and teachers were looking to me for leadership#
We were in the second year of a new school, and most of the students were forced to leave theirprevious school to attend this one# (ome went willingly, but many were reluctantly bused to aschool absent of many of their friends# 4n my first year at the school, as a "unior, 4 was one of the
reluctant students#
4n my new position, 4 knew firsthand the need, as well as the challenge, to encourage the morale
and build momentum in this new school#

Why the 4ules of /mprov Will Make You a Better 7reative Leader
When 4 was growing up, 4 wanted to be a comedian# While my other friends dreamt of ma"or
league baseball careers, 4 was up in my room writing "okes#
When 4 was eight years old, 4 remember tearing out the map in the back of our EncyclopediaBrittanicaand tracing the route of my comedy tour with a red ballpoint pen# 4 would travel from
the 6ast to the West %oast9ending at the Tonight Showin +os Angeles# )y only problem was
material# All 4 had were a few knock8knock "okes and scribbled one8liners from the Cosby Show#4ve long since left my desire to be in comedy Calthough 4 can kill it with a group of @ and ' year
oldsD, and today 4m more focused on being a good leader9in my church, family, and ministry#
And even though 4;ve left that dream behind Cstill available for dinner partiesD, 4 believe there aresome great take8aways from the rules of comedy9specifically improv9that will make you a
better leader#
.ou might not think of leadership when you watch the latest sketch on Saturday Night Live, The
!!ice" #arks and $ecreation, or the classic, Whose Line %s %t &nyway?, but theres a lot to begleaned from the quirky rules that guide comics through a successful run# !hese universal rules
provide the right atmosphere for comedic flow, collaboration, and creativity# 6very improv comic
knows these rules by heart and to break them would be nothing less than amateur#
2ood leadership, "ust like comedy, requires intentionality, discipline, and a good bit of risk#eres how 4 think good leaders should leverage the rules of improv to be more effective#

We are more effective leaders, by far, when we give specific directions to those we lead# When 4give my team precise details and tasks, 4m setting them up for a win#
When 4 give them vague assignments that carry on endlessly, 4m wasting their talent, and 4m
not working to move our church or organization forward#

position# Whether or not the senior leader consciously recognizes his or her role in
accomplishing these tasks, by sheer position he or she is determining the way the organization
performs in these four areas#
Are you a senior leader in your organization? :o you feel the weight of these responsibilities?
:o you understand your important role in setting these four principles of the organization?
astors and leaders are usually under a great pressure to have all the answers and to be good at
everything we do# !he fact is, however, that most of us only do a few things really well#
Inderstanding that and being willing to admit it is an indication one is becoming a matureleader#
4 was encouraged recently reading the story of 1ing :avid/ %hronicles 0J# !he preceding
chapters outline how :avid had diligently organized the kingdom, but then :avid humbly hands
over reins to his son# -f course, he did this at the command of 2od, but his speech to the peopleis not filled with bitterness and anger, but with encouragement and challenge to keep the vision
moving forward#
2reat leaders are willing to admit when they dont know the answer, dont have a plan, or arent
the right one for the "ob# 6ven greater leaders are willing to allow and even promote andencourage others who are more capable of leading at the time#
ealthy organizations maintain an unchanging vision long8term by being willing to change theirorganizational structure as needed# When it comes to organizational structure not everything
needs changing# 4f the structure works# 1eep it# 4ts comfortable# eople understand it# rogress
is happening#
But pro"ress is happenin" is key.
!here are times to change# 4ts important that leaders realize those times#
Ho# do you kno# #hen or"aniational stru$tural $han"e is needed;
Here are 7 considerations to discern it is time:
When you $ontinually en$ounter o'sta$les tryin" to move for#ard.4f every decision you aretrying to make hits roadblocks or dead ends, it may be time to build a new road#
When the steps to make the $han"e is more exhaustin" than the value the $han"e provides.%hange should be exhilarating once you get to it# %hange brings momentum# When the process
to get there is so long or difficult that it wears you out and youve got no excitement left 9 itmay be time for some structure change#
When you $an no lon"er attra$t leaders. When people are controlled more than empowered
you will attract doers but you wont attract visionary leaders# %reative leadership will die,
because genuine leaders rebel against controlling environments#

When you spend more time dis$ussin" than doin".2ranted we need to meet about some
things# We need to plan, strategize and organize# 4 suggest we have better meetings, but more
than that we need action# -ur visions are hungry for progress towards them# )eetings shouldcreate action# !he best structures help you get busy doing not attending yet another meeting#
When the stru$ture you have no# isn+t sustaina'le lon" term.(tructure based upon people, for example, rather than progress, will eventually need changing as people change# Ask yourself
will this structure work /K years from now? 4f not, the time to change is now#
When all $reativity is stru$tured out of the system.(ometimes the process can become so
clearly defined that nothing new is needed# !here is no room for different ideas or opinions# 7o
one needs them anymore# 6very question is answered# When people fall into routines, they getbored, and complacency becomes the norm# :evelopment stops# !ime for some structural
change#
When there is no lon"er any $onfusion.4f everything is so carefully scripted you may need
some organizational structure change# (ome of the best discoveries are found amidst chaos# 4love what Andy (tanley says about # 4t increases the productivity of the organization#
@# 4t keeps from frustrating customersGclients like me#
DONT RUN
Whatever happens, as bad as it gets, dont disappear from your leadership post# When things are
going wrong you will be tempted to skip out of the office early, hide with your door closed, ormake excuses for why you arent on the "ob# !hat is never the right response# When you
disappear
Your employees have less motivation to work hard; some will disappear too. Your worries dont leave you just because you arent at the ofce.
You will never solve the problems as an absentee leader.
You most likely wont be there to see the turnaround i and when it begins.
As much as you want the pain to be over, hang in there and fight your way to the end of the
battle# .ou may need to slip away long enough to regain your composure, write a new plan or re8
