  • Do you know what it is like being under house arrest for 21 years? This amazing woman

was under house arrest for 21 years just because she was fighting for democracy. Aung San Suu

Kyi was born on June 19, 1945 in Yangon, Myanmar. Her name is half of her fathers name and

half of her mothers name. Her father was General Aung San and her mother was Daw Khin Kyi.

Her father was assassinated when she was only 2 years old. Her nickname is Daw Aung San Suu

Kyi. She had two siblings, and grew up in Myanmar and India. She is a widow of Michael Aris

who died in 1999. Her children are Alexander Aris and Kim Aris. In the 1960s, she moved to

England. In 1989, she went back to Myanmar to care for her dying mother. Three character

traits that explain Aung San Suu Kyi are perseverance, determined, and discipline.

Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest in July 1989. The government told Suu Kyi that

if she left the country, they would free her, but Suu Kyi said no because she would not do

anything until the government freed all of the political prisoners and released the country to a

civilian government. There was an election and the NLD won more than 80 percent of the

parliamentary seats, but the government acted as if the election never even happened. This

shows perseverance because she would do anything to get the political prisoners freed and

releases the country to a civilian government.

Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in 1995. Later, she went to NLD party

congress even though the military was messing around with her. A few years later, she made a

representative group and said that it was the real government and not the military government.

Because of that, the military government put her under house arrest again in May 2000. This

  • shows that she is determined because she ignored the government that was picking on her and

    spoke out against them.

In November 2011, the NLD decided to get back together as a political party. In January

2012, Aung San Suu Kyi ran for office. On April 1, 2012, after an exhausting campaign, she won

the election. News broadcasters proved that she had won the election. On May 2, 2012, she

took her oath and took office. This shows discipline because before that, it was very stressful

for her because she was under house arrest for 21 years.

In conclusion, Aung San Suu Kyi three most important traits are perseverance,

determination, and discipline. She brought attention to the unjust events that were going on in

Myanmar. She made sure everyones voice was heard even the poorest of the poor. It does not

matter if you are different from everybody else. If you are not different, then you should go

right now and help someone that has been needing help for a long time.
