Dear Parent(s)/Caregiver(s) Currently in stage 5 (Yrs 9 & 10) we are working on students RESPECTING their own education and living up to the RESPONSIBILITIES of being a successful student, to achieve their PERSONAL BEST. These are our school goals and students and staff are working together to prepare our years 9 & 10 students for the high expectations of VHS students in their senior years. This means that students need to respect their own education and take advantage of every opportunity teachers provide for them. They need to take the responsibility of living up to the teachers’ high expectations and not just settle for a minimum standard, strive for their personal best and present work every lesson that they and their teachers are proud of. What an exciting time to be a student in years 9 or 10! Both years are preparing for their first semester 2 assessment tasks and yearly exams early next term. For Yr 9 students, positive results will allow students a smooth transition into year 10 and the senior component of our school. Year 10 students need to focus on reaching their personal best over the next four month period to provide them with the best opportunities and choices into their HSC years.
Year 10 have just returned from their annual ski trip to Perisher and this year I had the pleasure of
being invited. The 3 day, 2 night adventure started with a bright eyed group of fifty one students and
four staff who were excited to get on the road. After 30 minutes of Tetris, aka packing our bags onto
the bus, we commenced our journey onward to Braidwood Bakery. A quick toilet and pie break and it
was on the bus for another 2hrs towards Cooma for lunch. The students got off the bus in Cooma
and quickly got back on as they began to realise it was now getting extremely cold (5 degrees). The
final 30minutes on to our accommodation where our students received nothing but complements
about their behaviour and polite manner. All students knew that the morning wake up was at 5:45am
therefore ‘lights out’ was not an issue, as they were all extremely keen to be on the slopes at 8:30am.
Perisher delivered quite a lot of fresh new snow which had the advantage of providing a soft surface for students to fall into, this was more often than not the case. The day started with lessons ranging from students learning how to use their skis/snowboards to learning how to embark and disembark the lifts. Some students even learned how to link turns together and look smooth. Over the two day the development we saw in the skill levels of the students was amazing.
Great, memorable moments were created and thanks go to all the staff who organised and dedicated
numerous hours to providing these opportunities for our stage 5 students.
We all made it back in one piece after a sleepy bus trip and have great memories that we will share
for a long time to come. I look forward to working with all staff, students and parents in stage 5 to
achieve a culture of respect for education, creating students that are responsible for their own
learning and our whole school community striving for their personal best.

‘Spring into Sanctuary Point Expo’ Sanctuary Point Community Pride is holding their ‘Spring into Sanctuary Point Expo’ on Saturday 7th September at the Francis Ryan Reserve, Sanctuary Point. Volunteers are needed for a range of activities both before the big day and on the day. Before the day walkers are needed to do a letter box drop and on the day volunteers to oversee the parking of stall holders and to assist with guiding visitors to the various exhibits and stall holders.
