It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to this new academic year. Each new school

year brings me joy, excitement, and anticipation for the many great opportunities that the

UMLP will provide. The program continuously assists me in achieving my academic goals.

Also, the program has helped me get connected with various organizations such as Lehman

Wellness, where it allows me to engage with the students about their health. The UMLP also

introduced me to the Office of Community Engagement and New Student Programs where I

can make a difference in my community. Since joining the UMLP, I have become a better

leader and a great person. The UMLP is not only a program, but it is my second family. I

encourage many of you to join and make difference for yourself and your community.

Welcome students to another promising semester and a brand new year! My

hope for the New Year is that we all do well academically. One of the keys to my

academic success is my participation in the Urban Male Leadership Program. The

UMLP is not only a support system, but a family that constantly helps and

encourages me to do well in class. The various events have empowered and

enlightened me to do well outside of the classroom. It has also connected me to

many programs on campus such as the Office of Community Engagement and

New Student Programs. This program has allowed me to give back by

participating in Lehman L.I.F.E., where I have the opportunity to volunteer

abroad. It is a fact that I am a very different and better person because of Urban

Male. I encourage all Lehman students to join the program and see what it is

about.

The Urban Male Leadership Program, became my second home, the staff and fellow inductees are a

part of my extended family. I learned that the program comes with security and a willingness to

help. There wasn't one personal or school related issue that the staff couldn't help me with. The program is

a great base that enables me to explore other organizations Lehman College has to offer. I am now

involved in the Track 1 Leadership Program and the Lehman L.I.F.E. Program. I can proudly say, The

Urban Male Leadership Program has given me the necessary tools to become the determined Black Female

that I am today. Trust me, the journey has been very difficult, but my mentor, Nathaniel Gasque, has been

there for me every step of the way. He has done an incredible job of keeping in touch with me and has

exceeded my expectations as a mentor. As we celebrate Black History Month, I would like us all to

remember the fallen lives of the past and present. Men and women like Huey P. Newton, Assata Shakur,

Flo Kennedy, and Malcolm X – all who exemplified leadership, strength and resilience. In addition, I

would like us to ponder on how far we've come. The journey to anything of value, is never easy, nor is it

quick.

Making the transition from a high school graduate to college freshmen is one of the

most rewarding, yet challenging obstacles one could ever face. The Urban Male

Leadership Program has helped me to become a better man, providing me the essential

tools needed to be a positive role model and leader in society. Joining this program made

my college transition easier, it has helped me to acquire and formulate time management

skills, and through our weekly workshops has trained me to be able to mentor and give

back to others.

For this month dedicated for black history month I say thank you to the Urban

Leadership program for helping me and many other students by enhancing and making

our time in college more productive.

The Lehman College UMLP continues to enhance students lives with positive and dynamic

workshops and the Circle of Support Mentorship program. I joined this program in the fall of 2013

and was inducted in May 2014. Since then, the UMLP continues to assist me both in and outside the

classroom. The UMLP has afforded me the opportunity to engage, encourage and empower other

students who I hope will one day pass on some of the values that I have imparted to them.

This year’s Women’s History Month celebration is entitled “Weaving the Stories of Women’s

Lives.” At the UMLP we are collaborating our efforts to celebrate students of the same caliber. There

are some extraordinary students in the UMLP who have displayed exemplary leadership trails.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, the UMLP and I celebrate you as well! Stay focused

in your academic journey and keep the torch forever burning.

The Urban Male Leadership Program is a family environment where you are surrounded by

positive role models who help lead you through the college experience. When I first entered Lehman

College as a Freshman I was nervous and pretty shy. The Urban Male Leadership Program brought

me out of my shell and was a great support system that has helped me get as far as I am now. The

Urban Male Leadership program has helped greatly in enhancing my academic skills, as well as

leadership skills, in and out of the classroom. The UMLP workshops I have attended have taught me

valuable techniques that have made many aspects of studying simpler. I am so grateful to be part of a

program where everyone is so welcoming and supportive. This program has been the key factor to

my academic success.

Being part of the Urban Male Leadership Program has been one of the most enriching and great

learning experiences of my life. I was inducted as the Urban Male Leader of the Year in the Spring of

2013 but my journey in the program didn’t stop there. I continued to stay involved and continued to

further pursue personal, academic, professional, and leadership development. During that pursuit, I found

some things that are much more important and valuable in the program than my own goals. Those things

are the friendships and relationships that I’ve forged with the people here. Without my brothers and

sisters here in the program, I would not be the person that I am today. I am proud of that fact and I am

grateful for the Urban Male Leadership Program for giving me the opportunity to be part of a second

family here on the Lehman College Campus.

Annual Induction

and Awards 2014

When I first started here at Lehman College I didn't know what to expect or what the college

had to offer. However, that did not stop me from learning, so I decided to join the Urban Male

Leadership Program. Hearing about it just told me to go for it and I did. I must say, it was a decision

that I do not regret making. Thanks to the program I am able to feel comfortable on campus, make new

friends and have obtained an understanding of the meaning of leadership. It's not just about having the

position of a leader and leading people, it's about the bond you share with the people you lead, having a

common understanding with each other and mutual respect which is essential to setting an example for

others to follow. Because of this, I have made great bonds with colleagues, and thanks to their support, I

have made it to my final semester at Lehman College. I am determined to complete this last semester

with the knowledge and skills I have gained throughout these four years of college. But, the one most

important thing that I have learned since I started in elementary school until now, is that we never stop

learning, no matter where we go, we are always learning something new.

My experience in the Urban Male Leadership Program started from my first day on

campus. Before even being accepted to Lehman I was welcomed to the school and provided

assistance with my admissions process every step of the way by the UMLP staff. Throughout

my first semester, Fall 2014, I have enjoyed all of the workshops and events hosted by the

UMLP. I have improved my networking skills and have appreciated all the help from all

UMLP staff members during the semester. Throughout my Lehman College career I plan to be

an active and helpful member with all facets of the Urban Male Leadership Program.

The Urban Male Leadership Program has been my family away from home. At the

beginning of my freshman year at Lehman College, I was eager to engage myself into

college life. Little did I know, that what I needed to succeed was a support group. The

Urban Male Leadership Program has taught me the importance of expanding my mind

and enhancing my leadership skills. Failure is not an option. I plan to use what I have

learned from this program to not only change the lives of others but to be a positive role

model to the younger generation.

The UMLP Circle of Support Mentorship Program links Lehman freshmen, sophomore, and transfer students

in one-on-one mentorship relationships with Lehman faculty, staff, and alumni.

Research indicates that mentors can influence their mentee’s development in several ways, including:

Enhancing the mentee’s ability to have positive relationships with their parents and their peers.

Improving cognitive skills through meaningful conversations with mentors.

Increase the likelihood of remaining in school and succeeding.

Dina is a free-spirited young lady who you wouldn’t think

has ever had a sad moment in her life. She is an outstanding student,

ever friendly and has great sense of humor. She has distinctive

qualities that many students her age, and in the freshman category

do not exhibit. Dina is very academic-oriented; she has standards set

and holds herself accountable if she strays. She has positive views

about her educational goals and what she plans to do after college. I

know the Urban Male Leadership Program has been doing a

fantastic job in assisting this young lady. She and I have established

a relationship that helps me help her.

Having a mentor helped me to have an easier transition into

college. I am happy to have Kemi as my mentor, friend, and big

sister. She is a really good listener, and that's all I asked for. She has

listened to the good and bad things that I have went through, and not

once has she judged or criticized me. She has given me great tips on

how to excel in college, she has and still does congratulate me when

I get good grades in my classes. She motivates and tries to lift up

my spirits when I am going through tough times. I feel as if I can

speak to her about anything and still feel comfortable in my own

skin. I am very grateful to have her as my mentor. She's the best.

designed to provide academic support and guidance to Lehman College students. It builds a

strong foundation that provides inspiration and the means for students to strive for

despite obstacles. Therefore, I encourage all Lehman College students to never stop

The Urban Male Leadership Program is a collective of resources, focusing on the

recruitment, retention, and graduation of college students. Students receive academic

support, mentoring, and tutoring, while also participating in personal empowerment

workshops, speaker series, peer study groups, alumni networking, leadership retreats,
