A WOR D OF GR E ET I NG

Dear Friends and Partners in Ministry, Those with a green thumb flourish whenever they can get their fingernails dirty, as they plant, water, weed and harvest what they grow. It is a joy to behold! As demonstrated in the parable of the sower in Luke 8, we learn what is most needed in the maturation process, is soil that’s ready to receive the seed. Not seed that are thrown on the path, or among rocks, or within the stranglehold of weeds. Instead, into good soil, rich and abundant with nutrients, free from any elements of destruction, and ripe with readiness for fresh air, water and sunshine. Good soil receives seed and what results is 100-fold harvest. That’s the image which captivates our hearts as we celebrate our 16th ministry anniversary. We are celebrating the green thumbs of our amazing team, who have humbly and graciously devoted themselves to healthy growth in every corner of Leadership Transformations. Our harvest is abun-dant with blessings from the sower himself, who has seen fit to empower, encourage, and equip us to participate in this incredible Kingdom-building work. For 16 years the souls of leaders and teams has been the soil we till and with whom we drop the seeds of God’s grace, truth and love. Some have received the seedlings of LTI with resistance, others have enjoyed us for a season, but the majority have retained, persevered, and experienced fruit that’s over and above all we could ever ask, dream or imagine. As you read the following pages of this year’s annual report, we trust you will join us in thanking God for the abundance of his blessing. We could not become all that we are today without God’s strong hand guiding, sustaining and enriching the work of our hands and the prayers of our hearts. And, we could not fulfill his call over our shared life and ministry without you, our partners and friends. With grateful hearts for your presence and partnership,

Your brothers in Christ,

I thought I was entering Selah to become a trained spiritual director and although that was true, it didn’t take long to discover the Lord had much more for me! Through Selah I got to witness God’s love through the faculty of men and women working

side by side, I learned words to describe and stay with the things I was experiencing in my soul, and gained a new spiritual family! My capacity to wait with the Lord in hearing his voice and discerning his direction has grown. I’m more patient and at rest in his timing and love. Enter the program ready to be with God while being supported in community. Through the retreats, readings, teachings, and reflection experiences you will be led deeper into the heart of the Father, his ways, his holy invitations, his love! Amy Alves, Glenburn, ME Selah: Certificate Program in Spiritual Direction

I was blessed in ways beyond what I ever imagined by the spiritual encouragement I received, the willingness of participants to share with such transparency and by friendships that have continued beyond the Emmaus experience. It helped me to

craft a personal mission statement - simply listen and listen simply to seek, see and seize every opportunity to share the love of Christ in word and deed empowered and led by the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father. I am now more intentional about taking time for my own soul care and encouraging others to care for their souls. I recently transformed one of our spare rooms into a soul care peace room. This is now a space where friends can come to rest, read, journal, meditate, pray, etc. for an hour, a half day, a day or overnight. I even put the soul care in progress door knob hanger on the door knob! Anyone who wants to experience a more intimate relationship with God should attend Emmaus at least once in their life.Beverly Byron, Hyde Park, MA Emmaus: Spiritual Leadership Community

LTI’s Emmaus program has given us the language and rhythm our souls have longed for. The practices we have learned are uniting us in authenticity and courage as we share our weaknesses

and celebrate our strengths, drawing us closer to Christ as we lead Grace Church together. Emmaus has changed the way Grace Church is led. The difference over the past year is startling. It has radically transformed the way we relate to one another and listen to God together, and has dramatically altered the way we make our decisions in community. That’s why four members of the team travel to Boston for the quarterly rhythm of LTI’s spiritual leadership community retreats. And we’re excited to return to Emmaus in the year ahead, with three of us wanting to enroll in Selah next!”Gary Franklin and the pastoral team, Grace Church, Atlanta, GA: Margie Gardner, Kem Williams and Andrew Hill Emmaus: Spiritual Leadership Community

I deeply appreciated the two years I spent in Selah. The curriculum, the personal interaction with the faculty, the biblical teaching, the shared community with our cohorts, and extended space to grow in a contemplative way of life all shaped who I am

today and how I minister as a spiritual director. For years prior to my time in Selah, I found that others approached me to process seasons and situations in their life. The Selah faculty modeled for me a way to make space for God at the center of these shared times with others in a way that flows first from a contemplative life with him. I feel that God used the Selah program to set my heart free to love him and others in a hospitable way with a discerning ear toward the Holy Spirit - and for this I am very grateful. I would highly recommend the Selah program to anyone who is considering training in spiritual direction.Craig Lewis, Columbia, SC Selah: Certificate Program in Spiritual Direction

Emmaus has transformed me more deeply than I could have imagined. It’s as though my faith were two-dimensional before I came to Emmaus, and now it is three-dimensional. I have learned to notice God in quiet, in creation, in other people’s

stories. I have learned to interact with people on a level of soul care that I previously did not have the vocabulary or experience to do. I lead out of a place of rest more than I did in the past. I am better able to engage others on the level of soul care, not because of tools or techniques acquired, but because of the ways that Emmaus has put me in touch with my own soul and given me a language for engaging it. I now know it’s true when a friend told me about Emmaus, “It wasn’t what I was looking for, but it was just what I needed.” Abigail Carroll, Essex Junction, VT Emmaus: Spiritual Leadership Community

SA RESOU

“I can’t believe how the Scriptures came alive!” exclaimed a spiritual friend

aft er I suggested he try reading the Scriptures slowly and out loud. He had

read the Bible all his life; sometimes the text was full of life and challenge.

Recently his devotional life was more mechanical, going through the motions.

Here was a serious Christian going through a dry spell. Deciding to read

through the Bible in a year, at breakneck speed, he completed his assignment

but he sensed very little of the voice of God in his life.

I recalled a time when I fi rst found reading aloud, meditatively and slowly,

aided my hearing of God. Was this some newfangled reading of Scripture

from the latest author? No, it is a style that is old as the Bible. St Benedict of

Nursa, a 6th century organizer of monks who aided students in their study

of Scripture, is oft en credited with the organizing structure of Lectio Divina.

Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading (some call it devotional reading) of

Scripture is not Bible study. It is more like praying the Scriptures. It is

reading the Scriptures with the heart. Lectio Divina does not replace Bible

study but complements and enhances it so as to let God address our hearts

as well as our heads. Too oft en we read Scripture as a devotional duty rather

than an appointment with the living God. When I invited my friend to slow

down and listen, it was like the opportunity to ruminate over a love letter as

opposed to reading and analyzing a bill from Verizon.

Th e Upper Room suggests this way to practice sacred reading with an assist

from Richard Foster:

1. Lectio (reading with a listening spirit) Read the Scripture slowly. Watch

for a key phrase or word that jumps out at you or promises to have special

meaning for you. It is better to dwell profoundly on one word or phrase than

to skim the surface of several chapters. Read with your own life and choices

in mind.

2. Mediatio (refl ecting on what we are “hearing”) Refl ect on a word or phrase.

Let the special word or phrase that you discovered in the fi rst reading sink

“ Lectio has been used for over 1,500 years. It is gaining popularity as more and more people are fi nding it a powerful way to nurture their spiritual lives. In the past (especially in the Protestant church), we have concentrated on the study of the Bible. As a result we have come to know a lot about the Bible. But we have not been very good at applying the Bible. Lectio divina is an approach that builds on serious Bible study but moves to new depths as we open ourselves to God through the Bible.”

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

- Colossians 3:16

LECTIO DIVINA

Written by John French, Selah Faculty

into your heart. Bring mind, will and emotions to the task. Be like Mary,

Jesus’ mother, who heard of the angel’s announcement and “treasured” and

“pondered” what she had heard (Luke 2:19).

3. Oratio (praying in response to this hearing) Respond to what you have

read. Form a prayer that expresses your response to the idea, then “pray it

back to God.” What you have read is woven through what you tell God.

4. Contemplatio (contemplating what we will carry forward into our lives)

Rest in God’s word. Let the text soak into your deepest being, savoring an

encounter with God and truth. When ready, move toward the moment in

which you ask God to show you how to live out what you have experienced.

Don’t feel tied rigidly to the structure. Allow your heart to connect with God.

May God bless the reading and receiving of his Word.
