In September, 32 strangers gathered infront of College Hills Church and piled into abus headed for Monteagle.
Fast forward to May, and thirty one peoplegave tearful testimony of being strongly af-fected by someone in the class for the better. The transition from stranger to supporter oc-curred while learning about the amazing com-munity of Wilson County.
Leadership Wilson taught me the impor-tance of shopping local and being actively in-volved in my community throughvolunteering. It showed me how local and stategovernment worked and how to get involvedto make a difference while encouraging me tonetwork with other professionals in my com-munity.
The experience of being a part of the BestClass Ever schooled me in local agriculture, business, government, lifestyles, education, and social services available to those in Wilson
County. But above all else, it gave me 31 peo-ple I can call on, both professionally and per-sonally, to support me.
Leadership Wilson is a highly rewarding ex-perience that I am so thankful to have been, and will continue to be, a part of. It encour-aged me personally to join the LebanonChamber of Commerce and volunteer mytime to Charis Health Center. It taught meabout the good works of the Brook’s House. Itshowed me the best place to buy custom per-fume by introducing me to Heaven’s Scent onthe Lebanon Square.
Leadership Wilson taught me what each ofmy City Council members looked like, by en-couraging me to attend a City Council meet-ing.
To explain the experience of LeadershipWilson and the impact it has had on me is adifficult task. I suggest you apply for next year’sclass and see what it does yourself.

The 2012 Leadership Wilson Class along with the TN. Department of Health, and Wilson County Sports Council, hosted an event together in all3 Wilson Co. cities on March 3. The events were held in the following locations
• Three Forks Park , Watertown, from 9a-11a• Don Fox Park, Lebanon, from 9a-11a• Charlie Daniels Park, Mount Juliet 2p-4p
Activities at the events included one mile Fun Runs, health booths, activities, rock climbingwalls, colon cancer screening kits, Zumba, Kickboxing, and boot camp demos, gardeningdemos, and more. This was an initiative to get Wilson County to get up and move. By hav-ing an event in Mount Juliet, Lebanon, and Watertown on the same day it encouraged the en-tire county to move at once!
Not only was this a healthy day for Wilson County but it also was a kick-off event for a Wil-son County Schools competition. They have been encouraged to participate in many events be-ginning with ours and ending with Go Johnny Go 5K in May. Throughout this time theyaccumulate points. The school with the most points over that time period will receive grantmonies for their schools Physical Education Department. This will become an annual event thatwe hope will continue for years to come.

Joe Ali, proud supporter ofLeadership Wilson,
wants to congratulate hisclassmates of 2012.
2012 Class ProjectsLeadership Wilson Is Running forHealthy LivingPhil Carter, Joe Ali, Teddy Stewart, Kerry Becht,Jeanetta Watson, Kristina Hibdon, Bob GashGet Fit Wilson! is an effort to promote fitness and living healthy inWilson County. As a way to kick-off a healthy culture in the com-munity, members of the Leadership Wilson Class of 2012 decidedto make an attempt at breaking a world record for the most peoplerunning the 100-meter relay in one hour. The record is currentlyheld by the Bank of Scotland (UK), which had 191 participants dur-ing the Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week at ScotstounStadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 7, 2011. To beat the record, the schools only needed to surpass the current record by a single par-ticipant. The group approached the administration of WilsonCounty Public Schools with the concept and hoping to make thema partner in the endeavor. In the end, students from Mt. Juliet, Wil-son Central, Lebanon and Watertown high schools participated inthe event and each sharing a piece of a world record. Mt. Juliet sur-passed the record only to have their record beat by Wilson Central.Lebanon and Watertown High Schools were ready to go even fur-ther. With 19 seconds remaining on the clock, Isaac Keigwin handedthe baton to Carlee Clark, making her the last runner under officialtime. Once her leg of the race was complete, Lebanon and Water-town students surpassed Wilson Central and Mt. Juliet’s attempt atsecuring a world record. Lebanon and Watertown High Schools willnow share a part of history as having a record number of people,252, running 100 meters in a one-hour relay.

If I was to describe to you whatYouth Leadership Wilson is all about Icould do it in one word: Opportunity.
YLW was one of, if not the greatestprogram I have ever had the chance tobe apart of. Five 11th grade studentsfrom every high school, public or pri-vate, in Wilson County, were put intoa program which was presented veryvaguely and mysteriously to all of us.None of us really had a clue as to whatwas in store and even the ones thatmight have known a little bit truly did-n’t know because they hadn’t experi-enced it yet.
The first day we got there we wereforced to meet all the others that werein the same boat as us. We needed topick somebody that we didn’t know, learn about their lives, and then standin front of the group and tell what weknew. It was a great day to learn andget used to each other which we would
need to do for the coming events.Behind the whole program was Mrs.
Dorie Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell is anoutgoing and wonderful lady that isperfect in a leadership role. If someonehas ever met her most likely they’ll re-member her. Mrs. Mitchell is thebrain, heart, and soul of YLW and sheis what makes it kick.
On the first day she taught us thethree real objectives of YLW: 1. HaveFun, 2. Eat Well (Which we alwaysdid) and 3. Learn a little somethingalong the way. For the rest of theschool year once a month we wouldmeet up and go out and do somethingthat no other person let alone highschool student ever got to do.
If I had to choose certain events thatwere my favorites it’d be EducationDay and State Government Day. OnEducation day we were able to go as agroup and tour each others’ school.
Mrs. Mitchell had told us that we weregoing to be the tour guides. We wereable to tour Lebanon High, MountJuliet High, Wilson Central, MJCA,Friendship, and Watertown. This was afun day for all of us because eventhough we lived down the road fromeach other most of us had never seenthe other high schools.
Additionally, it was a very eye open-ing experience because all the highschools are different and we got towalk in someone else’s shoes.
On State Government day we got tojoin up with the Adult Leadership Wil-son class and go to the Capitol down-town. We all met at the train station, hopped on the Star and began the day.Once we got there we were able tomeet with Congressmen and Con-gresswomen and take pictures. I per-sonally love Politics and this wassomething that tickled me pink. We
were able to sit in a Committee room,go to the Arcade downtown, and thenwe were able to do a mock session inthe House Chamber. RepresentativeMark Pody, Representative LindaElam, and Senator Mae Beavers all metand talked with us which was also coolto meet our leaders in the community.
Even though these are my favoriteevents I loved each one in its own way.Not many people can say they havetoured a sewage treatment plant, visitThe World Headquarters of CrackerBarrel, eat lunch with a professionalthat is in the field we want to study, meet a Judge in his court room, ringbells at Wal-Mart, help the elderly atretirement homes, take a tour of a hos-pital, meet all our mayors, go througha DUI simulation, and Tour thecounty jail on the inside and out.

YOUTH
For me, YLW has created newfriends, broadened my awareness toothers everyday life, created a love andrespect for this County and my state, and all in all allowed me to do some-thing that I’d never had dreamed I’ddo. I want to say to anyone readingthis that if Adult Leadership Wilson orYouth Leadership Wilson ever crossestheir path, take the Opportunity andyou want regret it.
