Features, Outcomes, Benefits

• Feature - my car is painted ‘Police Car’ white

• Outcome - people move over for me on the motorway so I get home for 6 pm

• Benefit - I get to watch The Simpsons on TV

A benefit is a result that a stakeholder perceives to be of value.

Observations

• Lack of radical change– Not invented here (or at least in the NHS)– SMART implies small - strategic objectives get de-scoped– BM to validate / justify existing plans– Inappropriate benefits

• BDN helps rationalisation– The amount of activity required to deliver each benefit– The validity of projects mapped to strategic objectives– Re-defined objectives

• Iteration works– Good benefits don’t appear from one workshop

Maintaining the tools

• Small groups of local experts

• Capable of doing but not capable of training others

• Selling the concept within organisations was hard.

• Seen as management school BS
