John HaLe suggests that teachers account for 30% of the variance in student achievement and that,
‘…it is what teachers know, do, and care about which is very powerful in this learning equa&on.’
Teacher impact
Australian Council for EducaConal Research Annual Conference 2003 Teachers make a difference: what is the research evidence?
‘…the greatest effects on student learning occur when the teachers become learners of their own teaching and when students become their own teachers.’

Increased teacher knowledge “My confidence is greatly improved. Although
I had a general understanding of the experiences and needs of students with ASDs, a greater depth of knowledge is obviously a valuable key to greater confidence. I also feel more legiCmately able to address the needs of these students (and communicate with their parents) with some cerCfied training
behind me.” High school teacher-‐ New South Wales

The Commonwealth Government commissioned a longitudinal study on the impact of the Online Learning courses in NSW Public Schools. IniCal finding: ü teacher learning is sustained over Cme and
incorporated into classroom pracCce “I have got a lot out of this course…I now have a bank of resources and strategies ..I can use in my own teaching, and I am constantly talking to other staff about methods that can be used with students having difficulty.”
Case study: MSSD Na:onal Partnership
PUBLIC SCHOOLS NSW WWW.SCHOOLS.NSW.EDU.AU
Further findings: One of the strengths of the course is that it is a catalyst for broader change in schools: ü it enhances the knowledge of Learning and Support Teachers
who then influence and mentor classroom teachers ü teachers enhance their own knowledge, skills and resources
which they then share with colleagues ü where the enCre staff of a school undertake the training
there is a marked shi] in how the school responds to individual need.
The sustained learning with tutor sessions, interwoven with individual learning over Cme provides staff with the opportunity to try out what they have learnt and to discuss and reflect with
others which builds confidence.

Course quality was found to be due to: ü The quality of the tutor as an effecCve facilitator ü The quality of the online materials including videos which
are relevant to the Australian context ü The self paced learning combined with forum contribuCons
with other course parCcipants which is an effecCve scaffold for each parCcipant’s learning
ü The group format where parCcipants are exposed to teacher views from other seLngs
The Online Learning courses and this model of delivery are closely aligned to the MSSD objecCve of enhancing the
capabiliCes of teachers and schools to improve educaConal outcomes for students with disability.
