MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
What brings you joy?
I recently read The
Life-Changing Magic
of Tidying Up for the
January JLC Book
Club, I keep asking myself that question.
Author Marie Kondo posits that the best
way to decide what “stuff” you should
keep in your home is to decide whether
or not each item brings you joy. If some-
thing doesn’t spark joy, then you get rid
of it. It’s that simple.
T-shirts are one thing, but to-do lists are
quite another. How do you focus on the
action items that bring you joy when your
list seems never-ending? According to
professional organizer Tracy McCubbin,
part of the problem is that we fool our-
selves into believing that we’ll complete
everything on on our lists. We have to
change the way we think about them.
“It’s something living and breathing as
opposed to ‘I’ve checked everything off
and I’m done for the rest of my life’,” she
told Fast Company magazine. That’s an
important shift in mindset as many of us
make lists of New Year’s resolutions and
things we’d like to accomplish in 2016.
I’ve decided to make three lists of goals
for this year: one for my personal self,
one for my professional self and one
for my volunteer self. For my lists, I’m
following the advice of Jason Womack,
author of Your Best Just Got Better, and
using “verbs that make you money and
verbs that make you happy.” This helps
take the focus off busy work and em-
phasizes things that truly get results. He
also recommends having just two to five
goals at a time so you aren’t scattered.
This is good advice for our League, too.
When it comes to my day-to-day task
lists, I’m using Paula Rizzo’s strate-
gy and going small. She uses a single
sticky note of things that must happen
that day. “It forces you to say, ‘That’s not
important, but this is’,” wrote the author
of Listful Thinking: Using Lists To Be
More Productive, Successful and Less
Stressed. Added bonus? Actually com-
pleting a list each day!

Having problems turning off the alarm at the League House? Just follow these steps: Make sure you know the Inside alarm code prior to entering the door. (It is not the same as the outside keypad!)
1. Upon entering, you must close door completely or the alarm will not turn off!2. Use the stylus pen and firmly tap each number3. If you make a mistake, press OK and re-enter the code4. If you set off the alarm, answer the phone and give ADS the passcode (it is the same as the inside alarm code)

As we approach the beginning of a new year, it’s time to start thinking about what you would like your future placement to be! Here are a couple of helpful guidelines to make sure you are on track with your current placement and that you start thinking about what’s next for you in the League. We want 2016 to be another successful League year for all of our members, so use these tips to get you on the right track and ensure that you are thoughtful about your future placement. Happy New Year!

CHECK YOUR CREDITS! Visit your member portal to see how many credits you have earned so far this year. Remember the goal is to get: 4 Com-munity Engagement credits, 4 Education & Training credits, 4 Fund Development credits and 12 credits of your choice for a total of 24 credits at the end of the league year.
PLAN YOUR CREDITS! Feel like you are lagging behind on your credits? Start planning for the resr of this year, check the League calendar for an updated list of credit opportunities in each category. Remember that the first Thursday of every month is Family Night at the Food Bank, a great way to get your Community Engagement credits! The monthly JLC Book Club is a fun way to earn Education & Training credits, and donations to the Annual Fund will help you earn Fund Development credits.
UPDATE YOUR PROFILE! Go to jlchatt.org and log into the member area to make sure your profile is up to date with your current email address, mailing address and phone number so your Placement Adviser knows how to reach you.
CHECK IN WITH YOUR ADVISER! Are you having trouble making meetings? Getting credits? Not sure what your current placement is? Questions about your future placement options? Talk with your Placement Advisor about any issues or questions you may be having with your current placement so we can get those resolved before the new placements start. We want you to be happy and success-ful in your placement if we can help in any way please let us know.
START THINKING ABOUT YOUR FUTURE PLACEMENT! Look through the Nominating Committee’s available positions and job descriptions on the League website. Talk with your fellow League members on other committees about what they do in their positions. When in doubt, ask your Placement Adviser!

The Placement Advisers are looking forward to hosting the Placement Fair at the February GMM! We want to encourage every member to attend; it’s a great time to learn more about your options for next year’s placement. Here is what you can expect from the Fair and the Placement process:
We’re Taking You out to the Ballgame! There will be peanuts! And lots of information about the Councils and Committees that make up the League. Take time to browse each Council’s ta-ble and talk to current chairs and VPs about their roles. Some questions to ask:
• What is the average monthly time commitment for members of this committee?
• Will this work with my schedule? Are there day time or nighttime opportunities?
• What do you like best about this placement? What are the rewards? What are the challenges?
• What skills or qualities are most needed by members of this committee?
• How does this committee contribute to the League’s mission?
There will be opportunities to meet new people! We’ll be mixing things up by randomly assigning members to tables at the February GMM. If you’ve been intimidated by the size of the meetings or unsure who to sit with, the pressure is off. Both newer and veteran members will get to see some new faces and chat about previous placements and the League experience in general. Embrace the opportunity to branch out!
The Placement Booklet and application are coming your way February 2nd. The Booklet explains the Nominat-ing and Placement processes in detail, and contains descriptions of all potential leadership and committee positions for the 2016-17 League year. Read it over and think about your top three choices for placement. You’ll be asked to provide one in-League and on out of League reference, and to write briefly about your interest in the positions you’re applying for, as well as to comment on your strengths. It’s short and sweet. Leadership (slated) applications are due 2/12, and Committee applications are due 3/15. The slate will be presented at the March GMM and voted on at the April GMM. Placements will also be announced at the April GMM.
Your Placement Adviser is here to help! Please contact us so that we can talk with you about your interests for next year. We’re also here to listen to your feedback on your League experience--good, bad, or ugly--so that we can help to improve things in future years. We’re happy to meet you for coffee, or to talk or text with you over the phone. Look for an email from your Adviser, or find your Adviser at the GMM or by checking your profile in the Member Area of the League website. Your Adviser is your ‘friend in the League’ and is here to support you in your League career.

Thank you to everyone who came out in December to partici-
pate in the sack pack event at the food bank, as well as those
who came to the family night on January 7. This time at the
food bank is so enjoyable and greatly appreciated by CAFB.
Our next Family night is scheduled for Thursday, February
4. Please sign up on the volunteer calendar if you can attend
and be sure to include numbers if you plan to bring your kids
and guests so that we can properly coordinate the activity with
the Food Bank.
If you haven’t already, please mark your calendars and sign
up on the volunteer calendar to volunteer at Hullabowloo on
February 27 at Track 29. There are volunteer spots available
starting at 6:30pm. and the event is 7-11pm. It’s a great party
benefitting the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and those who
participated in the past have loved it. If you volunteer for a shift
you can also stick around and enjoy the party. People can also
purchase tickets at http://www.hullabowloo.com/ and please
spread the word to family and friends through social media!
The food bank collection competition at the January GMM was
between Sustainer Events and Education & Training. The Ed-
ucation and Training Committee won the contest and the win-
ner of the drawing was Courtney Bock! Courtney won a Booty
buddy (monogrammed pool mat) from Macs Monogramming
donated by Kella Rivers! They are super cute, so check them
out on Etsy. We collected 99 pounds of peanut butter and
$150 at the January GMM. We are already at 928 pounds
donated and $650 collected this League year. These are
impressive numbers!!
At the February GMM we will be collecting cans of mixed veg-
etables (6 cans). February’s collection competition is between
the Mini Grants and Sustainer Relations committees. Mem-
bers of these committees, please be prepared to donate as
much cash or food at the GMM in February as you can!!
Each member who donates from the winning committee will be
entered in a drawing to win a fabulous gift! Remember, cash
gets you two (2) points towards the competition. All member
donations are welcome and appreciated at the GMM as al-
ways. *To clarify, food and monetary donations each month
count for 1 credit towards your League requirements. For the
competition, you can get unlimited points (2 for each check writ-
ten for $25 and 1 for each set of food donations).
As a reminder, if you donate $10 to the Food Bank, those funds
would purchase nearly 3 times what you could buy and donate
for the same cost. Please consider writing a check for $25 at
the GMMs (even just once during the League year) rather than
bringing your food items to not only get your credits, but to help
the Food Bank support even more people in need.

The February Book Club’s selection is The Tipping Point by Malcom Glad-well. Join us at the League house Sunday, February 21, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. for a lively discussion about the book and ways it can positively impact our lives. Space is limited, and registration is available at jlchatt.org on the Membership Calendar. Participants earn one Education & Training membership credit, and Sustainers are welcome!

Letters have recently been mailed out to all Actives and Sustainers, and your contribution to the Annual Fund or Endowment Fund will help to support our initiatives for the year and secure our financial future as a League.
Remember, you will receive one (1) general credit for each $25 contribution, with a max of four (4) credits (a $100 contribution). Also, those who contribute $500 or more will become members of the 1917 Society which in-cludes recognition as a 1917 Society member and tickets to most events during the year.

IT’S LADIES NIGHT!
INFORMATIONAL MEETINGThe Recruitment Committee will be hosting an informational meeting for potential new members on Wednesday March 16 at 6:30pm at the League house. Eight (8) of the 40 spots for the next Provisional class have already been taken by ladies who came to the first meeting. LADIES’ NIGHT OUT. The Recruitment Committee will begin hosting happy hour events the last Thursday of each month. After many months of planning and transition, JLC has finally initiated the switch and consolidation of banking from Bank of America and BB&T to FirstBank. I would like to recognize JLC Executive Assistant Pam Atherton and Am-ber Gardner for their work to make this process smooth and seamless, and Kelsey Sabin for her leadership during this transition. Thanks to all of you! There have been no significant expenses or deposits during this past month, although rumor has it that the inaugural Holiday Soiree was a fantastic fundraising success!
