In 1968, congress passed a bill that changed several federal holidays, in order for them to fall on a Monday, thus creating a three-day weekend. The act took effect three years later in 1971. Technically, no president or congress has ever legally changed the name of the third Monday in February to be designated as “Presidents Day.” However, socially it has become known as “Presidents Day” to not only honor both President George Washington’s birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, but to pay respect and acknowledge all the other men who have served as our president. Resident Spotlight A big congratulations to Barbara and Lee Bockelman. Barbara and Lee have been married for 62 years and have three children, 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Barbara and Lee are very active in the community and here at Glenbrooke. Lee has been Vice President and President with Glenbrooke’s Resident Council and his Church Council. Barbara has been on our welcome committee as Greeter and welcomes all our new residents. They are both Stephen Ministers (which calls on shut-ins and people in hospitals) and they also conduct worship services at Life Care of Palm Bay. We are so lucky Barbara and Lee moved to Glenbooke three-and-a-half years ago. They choose Glenbrooke because Barbara was a Mary Kay representative for 32 years and spent time here visiting her clients and fell in love with the noise-free apartments and the happy residents and staff. They have a wonderful outlook on life and in their words are: “We love people.” Thank you for being who you are — we are blessed to have you here at Glenbrooke! Congratulations Michelle and thank YOU for all you do! We are lucky to have you on our team! Leap Year Most of us are told that a calendar year is 365 days. In reality, it actually takes the earth a little longer to complete its trip around the sun. How long? It takes five hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds longer. Back in 45 BCE, Julius Caesar proposed his calendar be changed to accommodate this little discrepancy by fixing the solar year at 365 days and six hours, or 365 1/4 days. Since 6 x 4 = 24, that meant that every four years those six extra hours would add up to one full day. This extra day was added to the month of February because it was the shortest month in the year already. So, how did the term “Leap Year” come to be? One explanation is that this additional day of Feb. 29 did not have any legal status in the old English courts. So Feb. 29 was “leaped over” in the records and whatever happened on that day was dated Feb. 28. Stan and Terri Harry and Margaret Michelle Nancy FEBRUARY 2019

Presidents DayPresidents Day combines both Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday, since both happen in the month of February very close together. Why was this done?

In 1968, congress passed a bill that changed several federal holidays, in order for them to fall on a Monday, thus creating a three-day weekend. The act took effect three years later in 1971.

Technically, no president or congress has ever legally changed the name of the third Monday in February to be designated as “Presidents Day.” However, socially it has become known as “Presidents Day” to not only honor both President George Washington’s birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, but to pay respect and acknowledge all the other men who have served as our president.

Resident SpotlightA big congratulations to Barbara and Lee Bockelman.
