BEFORE YOU BEGIN

In unit 1 you can take your first steps in learning Italian. From unit 2 onwards, you’ll find that the structure of each unitis consistent. Each of the units has four parts:

Part A is presented by Marco Venturi and Lucia Romani, and gives you the KEY LANGUAGE of theunit.

Part B gives you the chance to hear Marco using the language in real-life situations in Siena.Youwill learn to use this language yourself.

Part C reminds you of the KEY LANGUAGE.Then you get the chance to use it and have thesatisfaction of realising that you can cope.

Part D reveals the outcome of the story you heard in part B.You should be able to understandthis without any help – although help is there if you need it.

Here is a summary of the main activities you will do to achieve efficient learning:

1 work with the book;

2 listen to the recording;

3 stop the recording to repeat or think;

4 use the book and recording together.

USING THE COURSE In each unit, the most effective way to learn is to start by working on the book and therecording together.You can then use your eyes and your ears to help you to understandand learn.The book and the recording will take you step by step through the unit.You’llsee that the English advice and explanations are always on the left-hand page, and theItalian that they refer to is always opposite, on the right-hand page.

When you feel confident with the language, you can work with just the recording. Listento it as often as you can – in the car, on the train, while doing thehousework, for example.This repeated playing will help you to learnthe language and to become really confident and fluent. Sometimesyou can listen very carefully and repeat what you hear.At other times

you can just have it in the background while you relax or do something else.All this willhelp you to progress quickly in the fast lane to learning Italian.

PART A: KEY LANGUAGE

1.1 MARCO AND LUCIA Each unit is introduced by Marco and Lucia.They guide you through the KEY LANGUAGE,and give you opportunities to practise and use it.You’ll also hear it being used by Marcoand the people he meets in Siena.In this unit you’ll learn how to:

1.2 KEY LANGUAGE In each unit, you’ll be presented with the KEY LANGUAGE. Here it is for unit 1.

Buongiorno can mean hello, good morning, good afternoon or good day. Lookat the Italian and make sure that you know what each sentence means.Then follow eachsentence in the book as you listen to it. Do this several times.Then play the sentencesagain and repeat after each speaker.When this seems easy, try saying each sentence withthe speaker, imitating the speed and the accent.

This is an excellent learning technique which you can use throughout the course. It canbe summarised as:

(i) read and listen;

(ii) read, listen and repeat after the Italian speakers;

(iii) read, listen and repeat with the Italian speakers.

PART B: LANGUAGE IN ACTION

1.3 OVER TO YOU Now you can use the language you have learned from the recording. Look at the photosof people (a-d), and the KEY LANGUAGE on the page opposite and decide what eachperson would say to introduce himself/herself.You’re given an example (esempio inItalian). How would YOU greet Lucia and introduce yourself? (e)

1.4 LEARNING STRATEGIES Though they may be pronounced differently, lots of Italian words look like English ones.In addition, many Italian words are used in English. Recognising such words can often givethe key to the meaning of a whole phrase or sentence: you don’t need to know everyword you see or hear to understand the message. Decide how each of the photos a-d onthe page opposite should be labelled.

Listen to how these words are said, and repeat each one several times. Pay particularattention to the way in which you pronounce:– ch in chiamo like ch in Christopher;– i in mi chiamo like e in me;– g in buongiorno like g in general;– c before i in Lucia like ch in church.

1.5 VOCABULARY You already understand a lot of Italian words, and you can prove it. Cover up the Englishwords below and look at the list of Italian words on the page opposite.Tick each onewhose meaning you know, can work out, or guess.Then check with the list on this page,and learn those you didn’t know.You could copy them into a notebook (the very act ofwriting them down will help you to learn them), and carry it around with you, learning afew words whenever you have a spare moment. In each unit, you’ll be given a useful hintabout how to learn words. Use techniques which work for you whenever you try tolearn new words and phrases.All the words used in the dialogues are listed at the end ofthe book.

2.1 WELCOME TO SIENA! Your teacher, Marco, arrives in Siena by train. He observes the activity at the railwaystation. Mr Pavoni, a business manager, is welcomed by his company representative, MrsBennati. Marco has a coffee, buys a magazine and takes a taxi to his hotel.

In this unit you can learn how to:– say hello and goodbye, please and thank you;– attract people’s attention;– and, above all, make the most of a small amount of language.

There’s no magic wand to enable you to speak fluent Italian overnight. Goodwill isimportant, though.As you listen to Marco in Siena, you’ll find that a smile and the wordplease! will help you get by in a variety of situations. Note also the way Italian peoplebehave when meeting, either with a formal handshake and stating their name, or byembracing each other if they know each other well.

LEARNING STRATEGIES Remember to work through every section with the book and recording as many times asyou need in order to feel comfortable with the language. In unit 1, you learned thesequence: read and listen, then repeat after, and then with, the Italian speakers.

Now add another step.When you have repeated after and with the speakers, try to keepthe language in your mind while you do something else.Then try saying the sentencesagain, gradually increasing the time gap. In this way, the KEY LANGUAGE will become part ofyour long-term memory: you will have learned it! So, this strategy can be summed up as:

(i) read and listen;(ii) repeat after the speakers;(iii) repeat with the speakers;(iv) repeat without an immediate model.

Practise doing this sequence with the key Italian sentences in 2.2 opposite.Then test yourself: whenyou hear the Italian for the following, repeat it:

2.3 OVER TO YOU You now know how to use Italian to do some useful jobs. Look at the photos on theopposite page, and:

2.4 STRATEGIES It’s a good idea to train yourself to listen and to read in a positive way, picking out thewords that carry the message, and ignoring what is less important.What message isconveyed in the three examples on the page opposite?

2.5 VOCABULARY You’ll find it easier to understand people if you anticipate the words you might expect tohear in a particular situation and learn them. In this unit, you will hear Marco in thestation buffet, at the newspaper kiosk, taking a taxi, and arriving at the hotel. Look at thelist of words below and tick any you expect to hear the Italian for. Learn the Italian for allthe words you ticked.Then, when you have listened to part B, check how well youanticipated. One good technique is to concentrate on a word and to try to ‘photograph’it in your mind.Then cover it up and write it down from memory. Do this with all thewords, and then with four or five at a time. Use this technique again if you find it useful.

(The words in these lists are always given in the order in which you hear them.)

A useful way of dealing with any words you find difficult to remember is to copy themout with their English meanings on a slip of paper, and carry it about with you. Use anyspare moments to revise the words.

2.6 LOOKING AHEAD Similarly, you’ll understand people better if you think in advance about what they arelikely to say in certain situations. So, when Marco asks for a cappuccino at the stationcafé, he doesn’t say I’d like you to bring me a cappuccino, please, but simply Acappuccino, please. Note down in English similar phrases you might hear or need tosay:

2.10 PRACTISE Now cover up the English transcript and, as you read the Italian version, try andremember the English.Then check.

2.11 GRAMMAR A noun is a word used to name a person, a place or a thing. In Italian, some nouns aremasculine and some feminine. On the page opposite, masculine nouns are on the left andfeminine nouns on the right.The word for the with a masculine noun is il (e.g. iltelefono) and with a feminine noun it is la (e.g. la camera). If a noun starts with avowel or an h (not pronounced in Italian), then both il and la become l’ (e.g. l’hotel,l’acqua).With most nouns, there is no real way of telling whether they are masculineor feminine: it’s best to learn il or la with each noun you meet.The word for a is unwith a masculine noun (e.g. un cappuccino) and una with a feminine noun (e.g.una brioche). Una becomes un’ if the feminine noun starts with a vowel (e.g.un’acqua minerale).

Look again at the list on the opposite page. How would you ask for:

2.12 LISTEN AGAIN Each time you hear someone say ..., per favore!, repeat the whole sentence two orthree times in the pause that follows.

PART C:TEST YOURSELF Practise using what you’ve learned. Play the recording through once or twice until you’recomfortable with the language.Then play it again, and repeat what you hear.After this,practise ordering a cappuccino, taking a taxi to the Bellavista Hotel, and finding therestaurant.

2.13 In the dialogue on the opposite page, you see how you can develop the bare formula ...,per favore! into a more lengthy exchange, simply by adding other phrases from thevocabulary of this unit. Make up a similar dialogue in a café. Start by attracting theattention of the waiter, then ask for a toasted cheese and ham sandwich and a mineralwater. Look at the solution.Your dialogue may not be identical, but it could still be correct.

Notice that mio and suo are used withmasculine nouns (il figlio – mio figlio – suo figlio); mia and sua are used withfeminine nouns (la figlia – mia figlia – sua figlia). In this unit, you’ve also come across some phrases like the ones opposite, with nouns inthe plural: figli, femmine, maschi, bambine, figlie. When youtalk about one (singular) thing or person in Italian, the noun usually ends in -a (lacollina), in -o (il castello) or in -e (il fiume, la regione).When you talk aboutmore than one (plural), the noun usually ends in -e (le colline) or in -i (i castelli, ifiumi, le regioni). Notable exceptions are nouns like la città – le città: when theaccent is on the final vowel, the word does not change in the plural. Note also that theplural of una is delle and of un is dei.
