Principal Post Dear Parents/Carers,
In our third instalment of
“5 ways to raise our children to be kind”
Expand your child’s circle of concern: Almost all children care
about a small circle of their families and friends. Our challenge is to help them care about someone outside that circle, such as the
new child in class, someone who doesn’t speak their
language, the groundsman or someone who lives in a distant
country. How do we do this? They need to learn to zoom in, by listening closely and attending to those in their immediate circle
and to zoom out, by taking in the big picture and considering the
many perspectives of the people they interact with daily,
including those who are vulnerable. They also need to consider
how their decisions such as quitting a team can ripple and harm various members of their communities.
Make sure your children are friendly and grateful with all the
people in their daily lives such as the bus driver or a waitress.
Encourage children to care for those who are vulnerable. Use a newspaper or TV story to encourage your child to think about
hardships faced by children in their own or in another country.
Parent Class Representatives (Prep to Year 2 classes)
The Parent Class Reps have started sending out fliers to
parents to invite them to be on the classroom contact list. This will
enable parents to receive information about what is
happening in the classroom and school each week; answer any
questions parents might have about school/class routines; how to
volunteer/contribute to their child’s classroom etcetera. The Parent
Rep role is not about discussing or solving problems or issues that
should be referred directly to the classroom teacher or the
administration team. The parent reps for Prep to 2 for 2017 are:
Prep H 2DB
Jessica Bohan Leanne Fry Bo Young Song
Prep I 2R
Deb di Tullio Kris Cush
Nancy Mathew
Prep M 2S Sri Dmello Kath Moore
Lisa Connolly
1G 1HB Mechelle Glover Craig Brown Sarah Hand and Anna Galmes

We thank these parents very much for stepping forward to assist us to improve school spirit through communication and
cooperation.
P AND C AGM
Last Monday the P and C Annual General Meeting was held. Naomi
Pucko stepped down from the P and C Executive having held a position
for the last 10 years with 5 years as President. Naomi’s love for the
school (her youngest of three boys finishes here at the end of this year) and her considerable business acumen has resulted over the years in
many successful events with considerable money raised. In fact, the
financial and in-kind support given to the school by the Craigslea P and
C currently and historically under Naomi’s leadership is second to none. Naomi has promised to remain a strong advocate and supporter
for our P and C for the remainder of this year and the years to come
given she has been bestowed with the honour of a Craigslea P and C
Life Member which was reached through an unanimous vote of
members present at the Annual General Meeting.
Sharlene Emmanuel has also stepped down as Vice-President.
Sharlene has been an active member of the Craigslea P and C for
sixteen years and will remain as such. Sharlene too has led many
events for the P and C over many years and currently assists the school with a number of our facilities projects such as playgrounds;
grants; hall honour boards and the list goes on. We are fortunate that
as our Sensitivity Unit Coordinator, we have Sharlene on hand as she
is always there to do whatever she can to help the school.
I would like to welcome Matt Kuhr as the President of the Craigslea P
and C for 2017; Liz Lynch will continue as Vice-President with Jen Wild and Melissa Smith joining her as co-Vice Presidents. I’d like to thank
Melissa for her work as Secretary last year. Josh Tracey has been
elected in the position of Treasurer for 2017 and sincere thanks to
Rachelle Tracey for taking on this busy role during 2016. Rachelle is now leading the Fundraising work group for 2017.

HARMONY/SAY NO TO BULLYING DAY
On Tuesday we started the day with a whole school assembly where
messages were shared about achieving Harmony in our world,
saying No to Bullying as well as watching cultural song and dance performances. Children participated in lunchtime art activities to
reinforce these important messages. I would like to thank School
Captain Ty (Year 6) for his Harmony Day Speech; Mrs Ahuja for
leading a number of assembly performances sharing her Indian
culture with us as well as Ms Owbridge and Ms Kubler who led the lunchtime activities.

PBL update - important news!
This year we have implemented some new initiatives around creating positive classroom cultures. We believe our new initiatives are a more constructive approach to recognise and encourage positive student behaviours. Craigslea Stars will no longer take place but we have replaced it with an alternate strategy. The Classroom Positive Recognition Strategy is well under way with a number of families receiving their happy call from Mrs Canavan or myself. It is one of the most rewarding parts of my day as I watch children’s faces light up as they speak to Mum or Dad to tell them the news. 2017 is also the inaugural year for the Shine Award rewarding students who have reached the highest level of behaviour (Yr 1-3: very high; Yr 4-6 excellent). These reflect Report Card ratings and judgement is based on the Craigslea Behaviour Checklist which is completed by both the child and the teacher. Students themselves have supplied us with reward ideas and your child may receive a letter early next week inviting them to be part of this event. Combining these two initiatives means that, by the end of term, all children would have received positive recognition and reward for the ongoing efforts they are making in their behaviour. Both of these initiatives will continue throughout the year with the addition of a class celebration for all children at the end of both semesters. Teachers will also be helping children to reflect on their behavioural progress and setting goals for next term using the Behaviour Checklist. If you have any questions, please call me on 3350 8777.
Assembly Focus :
Our whole school assembly this week was a combination of
acknowledging and celebrating Anti-bullying week and Harmony Day.
I, again, shared strategies that children can use if facing and
witnessing bullying behaviour. The children are becoming familiar
with the conflict resolution skills of the bridge. However, dealing with bullying requires courage and strength. On 29 May (Term 2) parents
are invited to take part in the Be the Change program. It is the next
set of skills that the children will learn as a means of understanding
and dealing with anti-bullying behaviour.

What’s important now?
Helping your child to cope with school at this time in the term. It has
been a hot one and we are now in the ninth week of early mornings,
high expectations and homework in addition to all the extra-curricular activities and family commitments. Please consider how much
‘down time’ they are getting on a regular basis. We all need time to
relax our minds and bodies… and early nights to get the sleep we
need to rejuvenate.
Cybersafety
I trust the parents who attended the workshop last Wednesday
picked up some good pointers around keeping children safe online.
A couple of ideas I would like to share with you are these:
v Children are to be 13 years of age in order to have a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter accounts.
v Even Youtube for Kids needs to be monitored (although it is safer than Youtube)
v As a family, do you have all devices in one room so you know what is being shared?
v Recommended maximum viewing times: 1hour per day for children up to 8yrs; 2hours per day for children 9-17.
v Using the ‘THINK’ acronym will guide your child (all of us in fact) to make a considered decision when posting, writing, viewing anything in the online realm. Please teach your child about it. I have attached the Cybersafety notes for you at the end of the newsletter. www.amf.org.au

Classroom Capers February Class
PI We have enjoyed listening to our classmates tell us about their chosen book and why they liked their favourite part. We have finished decorating our Easter hats ready for the parade!
PM I have had the pleasure of reading with the class and listening to individual children read to me. It has been wonderful listening to them talk about favourite parts of the texts they have read.
PH In Science we are learning about the need of living things and watching our seeds growing. In Maths we are sorting objects more than one way.
1K We have been learning about how to care for places in our local area and how to clean up habitats for our local animals.
1HB We have been finalising our assessments for this term, learning about 2D shapes and getting ready for the Easter Bonnet Parade on Friday next week the 31st March. Come join us in the hall for this special occasion!
1S This week students will present their book talk to the class so we have been busy practising an appropriate volume and pace. We will also start making our Easter hats for the parade next Friday 31 March.
1G This term we have been learning about different habitats and the ways in which we can care for different environments. We’ve also been learning about how places can be natural, managed or constructed.
2S We have finished creating our lunchboxes out of materials for science and are ready to test them. For English we are finishing off our narrative stories.
2DB We are learning how to write an interesting retell in English, testing our constructed lunch boxes, whether they are water proof and hold certain items, in science. We are starting to plan and create our Easter bonnets for the Easter Parade next week.
2R We have been very busy designing and making our lunchboxes to match the given criteria using our knowledge we have learnt in Science. We have written Narrative stories and produced an image using 'Paint' to illustrate our story.
3B 3B has been completing Maths assessment as well as enjoying the last pages of our novel, “Matty Forever.” In Science we’re waiting for the Sun to come out so we can start assessment on shadows.
3C We have been enjoying writing narratives together. We can't wait to write our own now. We are patiently waiting for the sun to come out so we can do some Science investigations!
3/4BH We have started planning and creating our own imaginative narratives and have been exploring mental subtraction strategies.
4W We have been enjoying writing narratives together. We can't wait to write our own now. We are patiently waiting for the sun to come out so we can do some Science investigations!
4J We have been completing our Science investigations into weathering and erosion. In History, we have been reading the story titled, “Eliza Bird. Convict Child” and learning about the First Fleet.
4M We are busy applying our awesome editing skills in our original narratives, we’re learning about chance in Maths, preparing for our final Science experiment and we’re about to finish reading Matilda!
5K We are beginning our exploration of persuasive texts, consolidating all the maths concepts that have been introduced this term and trying hard to finish off everything we need to, just in time for the holidays!
5J In 5J we have been busy completing lots of different activities. In Health, we have been working on cyber safety posters to hang in the computer labs for a display. In English, we have started a brand new unit on 'Persuasive Writing' and in Science we are researching interesting facts about animals and their adaptations. We also enjoyed Harmony Day and think we did some pretty impressive dancing at the assembly.
5O In 5O this week, we have been finishing up the building and testing of our products for Technology, and have been beginning to reflect upon how successful our creations were in catering for wildlife at Craigslea. In English we have begun exploring persuasive texts, and even had some mock debates to test our arguments. In Maths, we have been revising some concepts in Data, Chance and Fractions. For Science we are gearing up to create a poster about an animal and its’ adaptations.
5/6S We are working on research tasks in Geography. Year 5s are investigating the effect of Natural Disasters, while the Year 6 students are comparing diversity in Australia and Asia.
6AD So much is going on in 6AD! We are finishing writing our short stories, working on equivalent, adding and subtracting fractions, analysing data in Geography, dancing and most excitingly...growing mould!!!
6D We have started to write our short stories for our English assessment. In Technology we are in the process of designing the stall to display our healthy food snack. Our mould growing investigation has begun and we are taking daily observations of this for our Science assessment.
6S We are exploring common denominators so as to be able to add and subtract fractions of different values.
