THE school holidays are less than three weeks away. And if
you have school-going children, you are probably looking for
some funeducational activities for them to fill their time.
Well, check out the interactive workshop titled Im A
Technopreneur
that will be held on March 14 at the New Straits Times office in
Kuala
Lumpur.
Targeted at children aged 9-12, the workshop focuses on two
areas
creativity and entrepreneurship which will hopefully nurture
them to
become technopreneurs in the future.
Organised and facilitated by award-winning inventor Tan Yeow
Kiang
(better known as Bugs Tan, or Uncle Bugs to youngsters), the
workshop
takes children into the world of business and innovation.
We will group the children into teams of five. They will be
taught about
the responsibility of a CEO (chief executive officer), COO
(chief
operating officer), CFO (chief financial officer), CTO (chief
technology
officer) and GM (general manager). Each group is required to
create a

new idea that can be turned into a prototype. This will be built
during the
workshop using recycled materials. Fake money will also be used
to
promote smart money management, he explained.
Each team will have a specific sum of money to buy required
hardware.
Once the gadget is built, each team will have to do a
presentation.
Crucial points will be awarded in accordance with the merits of
the
invention. Points scored are based on commercial potential,
novelty and
presentation skills.
The second part of the workshop involves exhibiting these
inventions at
an innovation market. The purpose is to catch the interest of a
group of
investors. Hence the children will have to be at their
persuasive and
entrepreneurial best so that the investors will participate in
their project.
Each ringgit collected by the team is also converted into
points.
The team with the highest points from both parts of the workshop
wins.
Workshops such as theses encourage the child to contribute
actively
and work as a team. Creative talent will be discovered. Planning
and
budgeting are vital, as are their presentations and ability to
pitch an idea.In short, they will harness their entrepreneurial
skills in a competitive
environment.
Apart from the first, second and third place winners, prizes
will be given
out in an array of categories. Some examples are: the most
creative
company name, the most pleasant smile, the most creative stall
and the
most promising technopreneur.
According to Tan, parents participation is encouraged at this
workshop.
I hope they will participate as investors. They can help pick
the team
with the greatest business potential, he added.
