Learning at Home Booklet
EYFS Team
Miss Forrester, Mrs Pickard, Miss Phillips and Miss Ball
Week beginning 1st June 2020
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
A few weeks ago we shared a story with you about a colour monster, some of you drew and sent in your own
monsters. It was brilliant to see your drawings and to find out how you are feeling. This week some of you will be
coming back to school and we will be sharing this story again and making our own colour monster to think about
how we are feeling about returning to school. You could make another colour monster at home if you like, have a
look at the designs we will be using in school.
We have also got this beautiful story to share with you called ‘While We Can’t Hug’ by Eoin McLaughlin and Polly
Dunbar. Think about all the ways you have shown people that you care while we have been unable to hug, perhaps
this might even give you some ideas of new ways to try!
Communication and Language
This week in school we are going to be playing the shopping basket game, some of you might have had a go at this already as it was one of the challenges set by Mrs Preece. If not or if you’d like to play again here is how to have a go!
Sit in a circle with your family.
Start the game by saying something like “Miss Forrester went shopping and bought a bottle of milk.”
Each player repeats what has been said and adds on something else. So for example the next person might say “Miss Forrester went shopping and bought a bottle of milk and some bananas.”
There are some ideas for other memory games here.
Physical Development
The Early Learning Goal requires children to show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. They move confidently in a range of ways, safely negotiating space. Children know the importance for good health of physical exercise, and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe.
This week in school we are going to be doing some outdoor challenges, you can find the challenge cards below. Which ones will you have a go at? How many can you complete? Perhaps you can even challenge your grown-ups!
Literacy
This week our Literacy activity is going to be writing simple sentences linked to our PSED, we are going to be
designing our colour monsters and writing about how we feel.
Beech class
Chestnut class
Willow class
Phonics
As you know in EYFS we follow the Letters and Sounds Teaching Programme for Phonics. We constantly re-cap the
phonemes and graphemes already taught and then learn new ones. The aim is to use phonics as a step up to fluent
word recognition – automatic and effortless reading of all words is the ultimate goal!
This week in phonics we are going to be naming our own aliens, you can use the worksheets below or perhaps even
draw your own and give him a name using your phase 3 sound mat. You could make up any name you like!
We are also going to be playing some tricky word bingo, perhaps you could make your own version!
Maths
In school this week we are going to be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, we like to play a game where we place some
shapes into a bag or box that nobody can see inside. We then put our hands into the box and have a feel of the first
shape we find. We try to describe this shape to the other people in our group by saying how many edges, faces or
vertices it has! Perhaps you could find some things around the house to use for this game and test your grown-ups
to see if they know what they are. This game requires really good communication and listening skills.
We are also going to have a go at building our own 3D shapes using pipe cleaners, what have you got at home that
you could use to make shapes? Here are some ideas you could try;
Understanding the World
We have signed up to The Wildlife Trust’s 30 Days Wild to complete throughout June, if you want to have a go at
home you can sign up here https://action.wildlifetrusts.org/page/57739/petition/1
This week we are going to be designing our own birds and making our own birds nests!
Expressive Arts and Design
This week in Expressive Arts and Design we are going to have a go at making our own paint! We are going to use
natural resources that we can find outside such as flowers and leaves. You will need a small pot, some warm water
and a pestle and mortar if you have one.
If your grown-ups use Facebook you can find a video on the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery page showing you
how to do this here,

PE Challenge
Athletics week 1
Challenge 1 – Animal Jumps
Challenge 2 – a 2-footed jump
• Stand behind a line (a skipping rope or chalk line works well)
• Stand with your two feet at shoulder width apart with toes up to the line
• Swing your arms backwards and bend your knees
• Swing your arms forward and high and jump as far as you can before landing on 2 feet
• Make sure that you land on 2 feet and bend your knees when you land so that you don’t hurt
yourself.
Challenge 3 – Can you break the WORLD RECORD?
Mike Powell (USA) is world record
• Can your family beat the World Record? holder jumping 8.95m in 1991
• Measure and mark the distance of the men’s or women’s long jump World Record.
• The first family member jumps from the start line and marks where they land. The next family
member starts from this marker and marks where they land. Keep taking turns in jumping until you have
beaten the world record. How many jumps did it take?
Galina Chistyakova (URS) is world record
holder jumping 7.52m in 1988
Here are some pictures of animals.
Can you jump like each of these animals?
Minibeast Music Music is really good at describing things we see around us.
This week you are going to listen to music that describes minibeasts
The first piece is called The Flight of the Bumblebee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M93qXQWaBdE
This video shows it played on a piano
Look how quickly the notes are played. It describes the bumblebee’s wings buzzing as it flies past.
Can you hear how the bumblebee seems to get closer to you and then further away?
It gets louder and quieter
Can you make a shaker that could sound like a bee buzzing?
You could use rice in a pot. Try different things out and choose something that can make a buzzing sound if you
shake it quickly.
Have fun buzzing with it. Make it sound closer and further away by making it louder and quieter.
The bumblebee music was very fast
Now listen to this song about Worms.
The singer tries to make it sound all slippery like a worm. Can you make us some slippery actions with the song?

Singalong with verse 1
Expectations by the end of EYFS- Early Learning Goals
Reading- Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and
read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when
talking with others about what they have read.
Activities- Regular reading at home, looking for signs, having a go at reading anything around you!
Writing- Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also
write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others.
Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.
Activities- practice writing words and sentences using anything around such as chalk, whiteboard pens, doesn’t just
have to be pencil and paper! You could write letters, label pictures, write stories, it can be totally up to the child’s
interest!
Maths
Number- Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one
more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers
and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
Activities- Counting forward and backwards, looking for and recognising numbers (especially up to 20) anywhere
around you, hunting for numbers, one more, one less than a particular number.
Shape, Space and Measure- Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance,
time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe
patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe
them.
Activities- hunting for shapes in your home, garden, daily walk, comparing the height, weight, size of objects, making
your own pattern, you could draw a pattern, paint a pattern, make a pattern using objects in your home.
Phonics
By the end of the Reception year, children are expected to be secure in phase 2 sounds and be able to read and
write phase 2 tricky words. They are also expected to know and be able to read phase 3 sounds and tricky words
and be able to write some of them.
So please keep practising the phase 2 and 3 phonics at home, sound mats are below! Also attached are the phase 4
tricky words to have a go at if your child is confident with phases 2 and 3.
We have loved hearing from you and your families since we started using our new class email addresses, here are
some of our favourite pictures and pieces of work from the
last week.

trying out our floating and sinking
experiment at home, it looks like you
found lots of interesting objects to
test Remi!
