Multimedia Learning Centre “How Can I Make a Difference?” This has been the question for our Inquiry, which is related to the recycling process as well as the R’s of reduce, reuse and rethink. Last week and this week, we had a group of students attend the Werribee Tip to see firsthand how much rubbish our community produces. This was a great eye opener for our students and a good way to help them further their understandings around our Inquiry topic. Recently in Mathematics we have been focusing on mapping. We went out and explored where the local bins were around our school and local community. The maps that the students developed to show this were amazing. In Literacy we have been focusing on building the students understandings of using strategies to understand a variety of books. Our students are showing good progress with this and with support are applying it into their reading. Last week the students participated in the Jump Rope for Heart program here at school. They were involved in various

skipping activities, as well as some other games and challenges such as a race. It was great to see the joyful participation and students representing their school sports house with pride. Next week is Education Week. To celebrate we will have our students developing Kahoot quizzes about themselves. Then the students will be inviting parents, guardians, siblings, friends and family into our centre to play the quizzes for a quiz afternoon. It should be a really fun way to engage in the students work and see how creative and clever they are. Please be on the lookout for invitations and information that will be sent home and posted onto Seesaw about this. Anthony Heffernan, Multimedia Team Leader

Visit to MSO

Middle Years Learning Centre

A big thank you from Middle Years to all those who attended the Mother's Day Afternoon Tea. We had a fantastic turnout and it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all the mothers and caregivers in our community. Education Week is next week! (week 6) There are many exciting activities happening connected to the theme of "Healthy Mind, Healthy Body." Groups 19, 39, 40, 41 & 42 will be exploring the 'States of Regulation' through a sensory experience, Group 22 will be making sensory

bottles, Group 23 are going for a group walk and Group 24 & 25 will be holding a 'Kids Move' activity. Parents are encouraged to get involved in their child's classroom activities on Wednesday 24th May to support and extend their learning, not to mention, have some fun along the way. On Thursday 25th May, students from Middle Years will be attending an Anti-Bullying show called "Power of One." The purpose is to highlight how bullying can affect others and what actions we can take to prevent it. We look forward to exploring our students understanding of such a relevant topic. Finally, just a friendly reminder to please make sure your child's clothing is clearly labelled with their names as coming

into winter we often find jackets, jumpers, scarves and hats without names on them.

Groups 19, 39, 40, 41 & 42 Some fantastic learning has been going on in MYPLT1 over the past few weeks. We have been exploring directions and subtraction in maths which has led to many great treasure hunts. In Reading we have been focusing in on making predictions when we read. Please help us practice our newfound skills at home, when we practice these skills in everyday situations they help us understand our world better. Parents are invited next Wednesday 24th May to our Education Week activity, we will be exploring the States of Regulation. This is a casual dress day, come in your best Active Wear. Please come if you are available, it will be a wonderful day. Remember to keep an eye out for camp notes, August will come up before you know it! From all of us at the MYPLT1 Team we hope you have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

Groups 22, 23, 24 & 25

Education Week is almost here and PLT 2 are celebrating. On Wednesday the 24th May 2017 at 2:00pm, parents and caregivers are invited to participate in activities surrounding this year’s theme, ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind.’ You child’s classroom teacher will be running an activity in their classroom and we are looking forward to the participation of students and their families. Furthermore, students are invited to wear their favourite sports clothing or active wear on the Wednesday to go along with the celebrations. Last Friday, students had a great time participating in Jump Rope for Heart. We were so happy to see students having a go and being supportive of their teammates. Congratulations to all those who were involved. This term’s Geography inquiry has been a great success so far and students are moving on to explore the cause and effect of bush fires in Australia. We encourage parents to have discussions with their children around these themes to further their understanding. If you have not already, have a look on your child’s Seesaw account to gain some insight into all the fun activities we’ve been doing. Parents are also welcome to comment and like their students work for encouragement. Have a great week!

Later Years Warringa Campus

Term two has seen our Later Year students dive into our Inquiry topic Citizenship 'What I do there'. After visiting our local main street, beach and shopping centre we are now preparing a visit to the big smoke where we will be going to the Eureka Skydeck.

Electives are now up and running which has provided students with opportunities to cook, learn swimming survival skills, practise their performing arts skills and attending RDA

which is part of our work experience program. Students are seen here cleaning the horse fields, and helping with cleaning duties. Pictured here are some examples of the great work

Group 33 are producing in Literacy and mathematics. Well done to all the students.

Bethany Road Campus

In the last fortnight BRC has had a visit from the Red Cross. This incursion allowed the students the opportunity to make connections between the great work the Red Cross achieve and students were able to make links to their Y Challenge inquiry. Year 8 and 9 students have nominated Who they wanted to work with for the Y Challenge and have been allocated a group according to this request. Some interesting ideas have already emerged with collaboration in full swing. The My Restaurant Rules Math Challenge has also had a productive start with students visiting McDonalds to evaluate their customer service some very interesting observations were made. On the 10th May The Refugee Council came to present to the students and brought a long a special guest from Burma who shared his journey to Australia. Students asked great questions and this visit provided a lot of context for students. Year 10 students have begun travel training every Friday visiting locations around local areas such as the Plaza, Main Street of Werribee and will be working up towards the CBD visiting iconic locations such as Federation Square, Gardens, and Hosier Lane. Year 10 are also straight back into their food enterprise program on Thursday’s where students are busy selling yummy goodies to fellow BRC students to raise money for important events such as formal and celebrations. The Year 10 has been focusing on text purpose, structure and language features. Students have been exploring this by using materials such as CV'S, job adverts and covering letters. Students are learning to understand that the way a text is structured is important and will help to assist them when students create their own CV's and covering letters. This work will support students when applying for work experience and will build the foundations to work towards the real industry job interviews later in Term 2. Keys please will be visiting the campus this Wednesday to support Year 10 students in getting their L plates. The outdoor Education students have returned from an overnight camp at the Grampians National Park. Student’s slept in tents, cooked dinner over an open fire, hiked to waterfalls and identified nighttime animals. Students had a wonderful time and shared their adventures with a camp video at assembly this week. Thank you to the Mothers of BRC who joined us for our Mothers Day afternoon Tea. It was lovely having a cuppa with you all.

News from Kristan-Lee Week 4 was a very busy week for the Year 8 and 9 students of BRC! On Monday students in the Outdoor Ed Passion Project went on an overnight camp to The Grampians. Students had to put up their tents and even cook their food! On Wednesday students participated in an incursion run by the Refugee Council of Australia. Students heard stories from a refugee called Eh Su who came to Australia from Burma and viewed a presentation consisting of facts and figures about refugees. This gave students a better understanding about refugees and will help them with the Y-Challenge. Also on Wednesday was the Mother’s Day Stall where students were able to purchase gifts for their Mums and other significant women in their lives. Thursday was the Mother’s Day afternoon tea. Thank you to all the Mothers and Grandmothers who came, and thank you to all those who made the delicious food! On Friday students walked down to McDonalds on Hogans Corner to practice their purchasing skills and to see customer service in action. On return to the school, students were required to list three good customer service skills and three skills they could have worked on, which will help them with their upcoming restaurant project. Week 5 saw students looking at job advertisements and resumes which will not only help students to apply for their classroom restaurant job, but will also help them with applying for jobs post-school. Some students even visited Cafe 11 to view their fantastic customer service skills! Well done to all students in Year 8 and 9 this fortnight. You have really worked hard on both the Y-Challenge and your restaurants! Kristan-Lee

Specialist News... Jump Rope for Heart was Friday May 13 and is Term 2's Whole School Sports Day. Students have been practicing their skipping and jump rope games such as limbo and snake. Jump Rope for Heart has proven to be a beneficial way to encourage an active lifestyle as well as teamwork.

The Middle Years morning tea basketball league has reached riveting proportions with the introduction of formalised teams, jerseys, training, and coaches . The teams were drafted in term 1 after students attended three try outs run by coaches Oren, Emilia, Tim and Brian B. The competition may culminate into a pizza party for the champions if dietary and budget restrictions permit. It is predicted Emilia's Cavaliers will win the league, but any team could win, even Tim's. The students improved ball handling, shooting, hustle, and cooperation has been evident. Great effort to all involved. Kacey has been running Early Years and Later Years active play lunch time activities with almost the entire Later Years student population participating. Thank you to all staff who make outside play an engaging and enriching experience. Emilia Tessaro

VCAL News... We are half way through Term 2 and VCAL students are getting serious about their Post School Options. This week Nancy and Kerry have taken Year 12 parents on visits to some local service providers. It is very important that students return their completed DET forms to Nancy to ensure their funding for 2018. Camp deposit money is due for both Tasmania and Queensland camps.

Interstate camps are a fabulous way for our students to explore parts of Australia they may not otherwise get to.

Important :Second Bite SBAT will be running on the Report Writing Day 26th May. The Friday SBAT group is expected to be at SBAT on that day. Students will be travelling independently to/from SBAT. Wishing Natalie fun in the sun while she is in FIJI. Student News:

Collingwood Children's Farm On Thursdays, we went to Collingwood Children's Farm for volunteering. We had to wear work clothes and gloves (work shirts, work boots). We were cleaning up the stable for the horses by putting the old straw in the wheelbarrow and we add new straws. We fill up the buckets of water for the horses to drink and we sweep the stable at the end. I learn about what the horses eat and drink. I work with the other students which is great teamwork. I enjoy going to this program because it's great experience. (Anthony) Social Enterprise

Last Monday our social Experience group went to Clayton to visit the With One Bean Coffee roasters. Andrew and Alice showed us around the warehouse. We saw the raw coffee beans and they were sort of green and very hard. They tipped the beans into the roaster and cooked them. After they were cooked CJ pulled the lever and all the brown cooked beans came out. We sampled the coffee before we went home. I like the milk coffee better but I don't really drink coffee. CERES On Friday I go to CERES I do Certificate II in Horticulture. We learn about different types of plants, we identify the different parts of plants, and the different roles that the different parts of the plants play. For example, the roots, the leaves, the trunk, the stem and flowers. We water the garden, we mulch, we weed

the garden and we plant vegetables. By Mohamed Fitness Program On every Wednesday after Manor Court and mentoring at Warringa Park we come back to Bethany Road and we do boxing and nutrition to get healthy. Some of the things we do in boxing such as upper cuts, jabs, straight punches and hooks. We have done rope pulling such as tug of war and we put the rope above our head and then we would do a squat In nutrition we do quizzes on dairy, meat and protein. From Jayden Automotive

At automotive at Kangan ACE we learned how to lift up a car using a 2 post and 4 post hoist. I like automotive because you can learn about cars and how to lift the cars up and I hope to learn about engines. I want to learn how to fix brakes. Child Safe Standards Victoria has introduced compulsory minimum standards for organisations and schools that provide ser-vices for children to help protect children from abuse.

The Child Safe Standards form part of the Victorian Government’s response to the Betrayal of Trust In-quiry (the 2013 Parliamentary Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non-Government Organisations). Education, awareness raising and helping organisations and schools to cre-ate and maintain child safe environments will be the initial focus of the Child Safe Standards. Warringa Park School has completed an audit in 2016 related to meeting Child Safe Standards and is compliant.

The school values the importance of putting the child at the focus of education, safety and wellbeing. Re-cently our school was named as a Lead School for the Respectful Relationships initiative. The Respectful Relationships initiative is in response to the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Vio-lence. The Respectful Relationships initiative allows our school to collaborate with the Respectful Relation-ship Team and other schools for a period of at least 18 months to build and sustain school cultures of re-spect and gender equality, both as learning places and as workplaces that aim to achieve long-term change in the community. The Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million over two years to support the deliv-ery of a whole school approach to the prevention of family violence. The Respectful Relationships Project team will assist with supporting our school to implement a whole school approach to the prevention of fam-ily violence and to deliver the P-12 Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum.

Child Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility Talk to your children asking them: When do you feel safe? What makes you feel safe? What would you do if you don’t feel safe?

Supports for Student & Families

Message from Nurse Nicole... Immunisations: The Wyndham City Council will be visiting our school and immunising students with 2004 Birthdates. Please note: some 2004 birthdates were completed last year. Round 2 (Wed) 31st May 2017 Chicken Pox & HPV 11.30am Round 3 (Fri) 20th Oct 2017 HPV 11.15am If your student (with 2004 birthdate) does not come home with a white A4 envelope with the immunisation cards, please contact me. If you are a new student and have missed out on the immunisation program at other schools, please contact me to check that I have them on the list and have obtained their cards from their previous council. Flu Vaccine: A number of students did miss out on the flu vaccine on 10th May. We will therefore try to catch up on these students and any outstanding or late paperwork submitted, on 31st May 2017- 2nd round Immunisation. Epilepsy Plans: Please ensure epilepsy plans are taken to your next Neurologist appointment and signed by the neurologist and yourselves. I like to keep these plans as current and relevant as possible. If any student has a recent seizure please contact me, so I can update their plans. Asthma Plans: With the winter months now approaching please ensure your student has a current Asthma Plan. New Asthma Action Plans can be obtained from the First Aid Room. Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me. Please note:

All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box.

If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier.

If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.

Nicole
