eLearning BENCHMARKING Study 2015

eLearning Journal | BENCHMARKING Study 2015

In 2013 362 companies and organizations with more than 250 employees from Germany, Austria and Switzerland took part in the eLearning Journal pilot study. With the motto “LMS in the Operational Envi-ronment” eLearning Journal surveyed project lead-ers in the eLearning and LMS areas and compiled a comprehensive body of data regarding the most im-portant infrastructure software for eLearning.

The eLearning BENCHMARKING Study LMS delivered a host of interesting and new insights. A whole 73.4% of the surveyed organizations were already deploying an LMS and of the remainder, the majority planned an imminent adoption of an LMS. It is therefore not sur-prising that almost half of the organizations (44.9%) only introduced their LMS in the past 1 — 2 years. Our current special edition, “Practical & Market Guide 2015: LMS & Authoring Tools in Operational Use” provides a comprehensive analysis of the eLearning BENCHMARKING Study.

eLearning BENCHMARKING Study 2015

In 2014 the eLearning SUMMIT Tour took place for the third time and, with 12 events, reached approximate-ly 2100 learning professionals and project managers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The second eLearning BENCHMARKING Study accompanied the eLearning SUMMIT Tour 2014 with the motto “Learn-ing in the Organization — Digital Media in Operation-al Education”. With 695 organizations, each with at least 250 employees taking part, this as the largest ever study on the topic of eLearning in the Ger-man-speaking world.

In contrast to the pilot study the eLearning BENCH-MARKING Study 2015 focused on several topic-clus-ters. Questions on the deployment of eLearning established facts, figures and data about methods, target groups, requirements and eLearning compe-tencies in the organizations. The findings on “mobile learning” provide a practically relevant insight into the status quo of this current topic and demonstrate what remains of the hype in everyday use. The ques-tions on the topic of LMS complemented the data from the eLearning BENCHMARKING Study LMS. On the following pages you will get an exclusive insight into the results of the eLearning BENCHMARKING Study 2015.

Looking ahead:eLearning BENCHMARKING Study 2016

eLearning Journal will also carry out a comprehen-sive BENCHMARKING Study in 2015 to accompany this year’s eLearning SUMMIT Tour, which is expected to attract 2,500 participants at 21 events. With the motto, “Operational eLearning Scenarios” the new study will invite the approximately 5,000 eLearning Journal editorial contacts from companies and orga-nizations in the German-speaking region to give us an insight into daily usage of eLearning. This year eLearning Journal expects between 750 and 1,000 organizations to take part in the study.

The eLearning BENCHMARKING Study 2016 will not only develop further through the number of partici-pants but also through the substance and direction of its content. In the third study, alongside the general questions about the deployment of eLearning sce-narios, there will be altogether four topical clusters in four subsidiary studies, which will examine various aspects of eLearning in greater depth: Performance Support / Workplace Learning, Blended Learning, Tal-ent Management and Language Training.

The results of the eLearning BENCHMARKING Study 2016 will be officially published at didacta 2016 in Co-logne from 16 to 20 February 2016 in the special exhi-bition area, “eLearningSUMMIT@didacta2016”.

eLearning in SMEs

The subject of “Operational eLearning” continues to be dominated by large enterprises, reflected in the fact that 70.4% of the surveyed organizations have more than 1,000 employees. SMEs face more difficult condi-tions for the deployment of eLearning, which is why only about a fifth (19.9%) of the surveyed organizations falls into the category of mid-tier enterprises. Measured against the total number of German organizations, mid-tier business is therefore still under-represented in the eLearning area and still promises great potential for the future.

Stakeholder Management

For eLearning to have a sustainable future in an organization it is important that the relevant stakeholders should be involved early. Even during budget decisions the company leadership plays an important role in terms of expectations and, with 40.8% mentions, is significantly ahead of the personnel and functional depart-ment as well as direct line management.

eLearning Growth

According to the estimates of the respondents, organizations will further increase their eLearning budgets in the coming three years. Moreover, current topics such as mobile learning or gamification offer enhanced added value but frequently incur greater investment costs and could therefore benefit from increased resources.

Responsibilities beyond the Personnel Department

Is the HR or personnel department the center of responsibility for eLearning at German-speaking companies? With 41.5% of respondents mentioning it, the personnel function seems to play a central role in the planning, supervision and implementation of eLearning; however, the department responsible for training and vocational education (50.9%) or the specific eLearning department (38.2%) is at least equally important.

Current eLearning Methods

In most organizations, eLearning currently means, above all else, the deployment of WBTs (79.7% deploying them regularly or frequently) and blended learning (65% deploying it regularly or frequently). Many of the often-mentioned trend topics such as mobile learning (18.7% deploying regularly or frequently), social learning (21.5% deploying regularly or frequently) or game-based learning (12.4% deploying regularly or frequently) still play a relatively minor role in practice in organizations.

Classic eLearning Requirements Dominate

IT, product and compliance training belong to the classics of eLearning and are also regarded today as the most widespread learning requirements by the surveyed organizations. The relatively limited requirement for language training (27.1%) is surprising, considering that roughly half (50.3%) of the surveyed organizations are globally active and therefore have to deal with several languages.

Make or Buy

Organizations face the central question of how content should be produced for new eLearning content: with their own production (for example by internal eLearning specialists), in collaboration with an eLearning agen-cy or alternatively by turning to standard products. The very balanced answers from surveyed organizations make it clear how the answer to this question depends a lot on the project.

High Requirement for In-house Competences

There is an increasing demand for organizations to have their own eLearning competences. Nearly half of those surveyed (43%) stated that such in-house competences are already available. A further 45.6% of the organizations plan to build their own eLearning competences. The eLearning competences that are in demand are spread very evenly and extend from concept and production of eLearning scenarios to learning support.

Deploying the 70:20:10 Model

Over recent years there has been a growing recognition that employees primarily learn while at work and by engaging with their colleagues. Just over three-quarters (76.5%) of the organizations stated that they are already supporting the issue of workplace learning (where employees are active). Approaches such as social learning or performance support seek to take advantage of this insight for operational training.

Informal Learning: Major Importance, Limited Implementation

When it comes to informal learning, there is an interesting tension between the importance that is attributed to the topic and the actual use in day-to-day operations. A good 70.3% of the surveyed organizations attribute high importance or importance to the topic of informal learning. At the same time the topic of social learning, which is designed to make informal learning usable, is only deployed at 21.5% of the surveyed organizations. Moreover in future social learning will only be relevant in 24.1% of the organizations, which proves that the formation of “learning communities” will also face great challenges in future.

Mobile Learning: Mainly for Sales

Although the subject of mobile learning has apparently been accompanied by a lot of hype for a few years, for 60% of the surveyed organizations it is still not a subject of daily practice. The most widespread usage for mobile learning is within sales and distribution (26.7%), presumably because it presents the greatest value-add in this area due to travel. Also, the costs for the purchase of mobile end-user devices is often easier to bear in this area.

Widespread LMS

Learning management systems (LMS) are widespread across the surveyed organizations, with 71.9% deploy-ment; they often constitute the central infrastructure for the management and distribution of eLearning ar-rangements. Among the organizations that up until now have had no LMS in operation, a further 16.9% plan to acquire such a system. Regarding the crucial choice between commercial and open source solutions, the majority of organizations, at 60.8%, rely on commercial systems from established vendors. Only 22.6% of organizations rely on the lower cost open source systems.
