Learning Inside & Outside of the Classroom OCTOBER 2021 To access this month’s featured web content, visit WLIW.org/guide S tarting this month, WLIW21 is featuring a two-hour block of fun and engaging educational programs for students in pre-K through fifth grade. Afterschool Superstars will feature literacy, math, social-emotional learning, art, and science content from: Wimee’s Words (Monday – Thursdays at 3pm): Robot Wimee inspires preschoolers and kindergarteners to learn through creativity – wacky wordplay, silly songs, and playful conversation. Curious Crew (Mondays – Thursdays at 3:30pm): Inquisitive kids take a hands-on approach to scientific exploration with Dr. Rob Stephenson, discovering elements of science through experiments, information about STEM, and more. Kid Stew (Fridays at 3pm): By kids, about kids and for kids, Kid Stew encourages children of all ages to learn more about books, music, the arts and science. Into the Outdoors (Fridays at 3:30pm): Young explorers learn about energy conservation and the science behind maintaining a healthy planet, motivating them to explore, discover and understand the natural world around them. Weekdays at 4pm we’re also bringing back Let’s Learn, our series produced in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, to support children in Pre-K through 2 nd grade with lessons on reading, writing, STEM, the arts and more. The series also brings viewers on virtual field trips to see dance performances, meet animals, visit botanical gardens and more. Also starting on October 4 at 10am is Alma’s Way. The animated series from Fred Rogers Productions and created by Sonia Manzano (“Maria” on Sesame Street) stars proud, confident six-year-old Alma Rivera, a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx, along with her family, her younger brother Junior, and a diverse group of close-knit and loving friends and community members. Alma encourages children to find their own answers to their problems, express what they think and feel, and recognize and respect the unique perspective of others. Join us weekday mornings and afternoons, or stream episodes online anytime. Learning never ends, and we’re here supporting all students inside and outside of the classroom! 40 YEARS OF NATURE EXCELLENCE To kick off Nature’s 40 th season, check out My Garden of a Thousand Bees (Thursday, October 21 at 8pm), a story of surprise and revelation when — during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown — a wildlife cameraman filming the bees in his urban garden discovers the many diverse species and personalities that exist in the insect family. Then, follow the struggles, failures and triumphs of a single osprey family in Season of the Osprey (Thursday, October 28 at 8pm). The pair, who call a Connecticut saltmarsh home, must battle their enemies, withstand the elements, and hunt hundreds of fish, all to raise the next generation of these consummate sea hawks.
