This year we’re pleased to present the first ever Simply Schools for museums and galleries in Cumbria. Look inside to discover 14 different venues and a unique range of learning sessions right across this beautiful county. Each with its own distinctive character and collections, our museums and galleries provide learning opportunities for schools in every corner of Cumbria.

This new initiative has been led by the Cumbria Museum Consortium, a partnership of the three largest cultural heritage organisations in the county, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Lakeland Arts and the Wordsworth Trust, funded by Arts Council England.

Learning sessions offered cover an exceptional range of subjects all carefully linked to different curriculum areas, from arts and crafts at Blackwell to geology at Keswick and boatbuilding at the Dock Museum in Barrow.

This year we’re introducing a programme of teacher CPD in museums around the county. Go to page 34 to find out more.

Look out also for Simply Schools Lancashire to discover learning opportunities in other museums across the North West.

We invite you to explore the unparalleled range of learning experiences our museums and galleries offer for children, from historic Carlisle to coastal West Cumbria and onwards via rural Eden Valley to the beautiful Lake District. www.simplyschools.org.uk

Thank you for supporting museums and galleries in Cumbria. We look forward to seeing you!

Armitt Museum AND LibraryArmitt Museum AND Library

The Armitt Library was founded over a century ago to provide a reference library for the scholarly community that lived in and around Ambleside. It had a close relationship with the Charlotte Mason College, now part of the University of Cumbria. Apart from the library, which contains 14,500 volumes including many rare books, it holds the Beatrix Potter natural history collection, the Kurt Schwitters collection of works, the Charlotte Mason Archive, a collection of Neolithic, bronze age, Roman artefacts and various manuscripts and ephemera relating to the history of the Lake District. It is currently housed in a purpose built building opened in 1997.

We offer a number of 2 hour CPD opportunities for teachers. If you are interested, please contact us for dates.

THE HISTORY OF CONSERVATION IN THE LAKE DISTRICT 2hr CPD session 4-6pmLed by Graham Kilner, BA (hons). MA.

The Lake District is arguably the point of origin for the conservation movement in the UK, because of its association with the Romantic movement which caused people to look at landscape and culture in a different way. The session explores how William Wordsworth and others shaped the way we look at the world and the actions that flowed out of it.

THE OTHER BEATRIX POTTER – SCIENTIST, CONSERVATIONIST2hr CPD session 4-6pmLed by Graham Kilner, BA (hons). MA.

Beatrix Potter’s name resonates in the Lake District as its most famous resident author. But it is arguable that her pioneering foray into science, and her later work as a conservationist are equally important. This session firstly touches on the history of science, mycology, and the role of women in science, and then on her pivotal role in the conservation of the landscape and culture of the Lakes. Important ideas are addressed through the activities of this well known character.

and were able to extend their learning through Art, English and Philosophy lessons when we

returned to school.

INTRODUCING THE GOTHICKS3 and above / 1 hour Workshop / Onsite and outreach WorkshopThis session will investigate the context: the when, where, who (or what) and why of Gothic fiction. ACTIVITIES

Dove Cottage is an inspiring and unique place for pupils of all ages. Whether you want to improve your pupils’ creative writing skills, learn more about poetry or enjoy a great day of cross-curricular learning outside the classroom, a visit is always rewarding and worthwhile.

We approach the poetry of the Romantics through a diverse range of learning techniques including creative writing, object handling, debating and visual arts. Encouraging students to use their own ideas, imagination and creativity while learning about great works of literature.

The visit helped to bring the poems alive

for the kids and helped them understand the

historical context.

DOUR TO DELICIOUS (2hrs) KS2Local history, literacy, healthy eating, maths

Explore Cumbria’s history through food! Learn the story of the humble oat from the Iron Age to modern day as we make clapbread, a staple for centuries. Followed by ice cream made the old-fashioned way, pupils will enjoy a delicacy previously reserved for the elite. These historic recipes demonstrate two distinct periods in Cumbria’s history and changes to the class system, expansion of the railway and our relationship with Scotland. Developed and piloted by Grange C of E Primary School.

Outreach (IN SCHOOL)Outreach (IN SCHOOL)We had a wonderful day at the Museum of

Lakeland Life. Exploring the rooms helped the children to gain a picture of the past without mobile phones and televisions. We used stories to further explore the

rooms, telling tales, exploring characters and filming our ideas. The children couldn’t

stop talking about their day and their parents are very keen to watch their films.

Penrith and Eden Museum Penrith and Eden Museum

Our children were captivated from the moment they entered the museum. It

began to bring history to life which we find, as teachers, really difficult to do in the

classroom. The children couldn’t believe it when they could actually handle tools,

bowls and spear heads. Their imaginations ran wild thinking about who actually made

it and what they used it for.

Penrith and Eden in a nutshell! The museum is housed in a listed building which is worth a visit in its own right. Inside, you can find out about the rich history and heritage of Penrith and surrounding area. The museum is a gateway to exploring the Neolithic age in the Eden Valley and Long Meg Stone Circle. Our collections are comprised of thousands of fascinating objects, including finds from the Roman period, mementoes of Penrith’s local heroes, paintings and an extensive geology collection. The museum has regularly changing exhibitions and a wide range of outreach and education sessions.

Sessions will include:

History as storytelling This session explores exciting ways to link art, technology, history and storytelling both within an art gallery environment and back in the classroom. Bring creativity back to the centre of learning! This would be useful for subject leaders in Art, Technology, ICT, History and English, as well as for classroom teachers who would like their teaching to be more cross-curricular.

Memorable maths in a museum This session at Blackwell supports teachers in planning maths activities in a cultural venue, making maths more cross-curricular and meaningful. We will consider activities to support number, geometry, measurement, problem solving and mathematical thinking using a very special building and the collection housed within.

Getting to grips with history This workshop is most suitable for Foundation stage and Key stage 1 teachers. Using handling objects and being inspired by the collection at Tullie House we will consider activities that support young children’s developing historical understanding. Helping them make sense of the world around them, develop simple chronology skills and begin to understand how things change over time. Bring planning for a history session that works really well and one that you’d like to improve.

Developing deep thinkers Taking children into an art gallery or museum often gives you a real understanding of their hidden knowledge and talents. We aim to show you how to support deeper thinking in your children by developing critical thinking skills and creativity using art and historical objects.

Playing with poetry‘Playing’ with poetry because good learning should be active and practical, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic, memorable and fun. During this session you will understand and enjoy a variety of poetry, gaining tools to teach it and ideas on how to deliver it in class. By the end of the session you will leave enthusiastically, confidently and with a poetry toolbox!

Arts Award, Artsmark and Curious Minds

Arts Award, Artsmark and Curious Minds

We offer a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage with Arts Award as a way of accrediting their achievements. Look out for the Arts Award logos in this brochure, highlighting museums that can support your pupils in working towards the five different accreditation levels.

We work with Discover and Explore levels and also Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Dove CottageExamples of Discover and Explore projects include working with groups of children both at school, including through an After School Art Club and at Dove Cottage, There is a link to exhibitions current in museums at the time and usually involves poets and artists. Exploring Wordsworth and our local area through creative writing, ceramics, photography, print, painting, drama. We design the project so that children can attain the Arts Award while learning and being creative, and have covered Wordsworth and Waterloo, Victorian Tourism, Shakespeare Week, and a Weather Project.

Bronze award : Five of our Young Poets completed the Bronze level last year, they documented their own poetry progression, visits to see live readings, their poetry inspirations and preformed their own work at Dove Cottage and at Kendal Poetry festival. One of our young poets has moved onto the Gold level award this year.

Light Up BlackwellCoinciding with ‘The Light Within’ exhibition at the attraction, nearWindermere, artists Griet Beyeart and Paul Miller worked with year 10 artand design students from Kirkbie Kendal School to project a live light showonto the exterior walls of Blackwell at night. And as part of the processthey completed an Arts Award.

Cumbria Museum Consortium works closely with Curious Minds – the support organisation that strives to connect children, young people and schools with arts and culture.

Tullie House We offer a range of Arts Award opportunities, through formal and informal learning. Discover or Explore Arts Awards can be achieved through our Mini Museum project, a great way to enhance your history topic and deepen learning. Work with Tullie House over a term to learn more about your subject as well as how a museum works and is run, then use your new found knowledge to create your own pop up mini museum in school, with objects borrowed from the museum and your own creations. We also offer Bronze or Silver Arts Award opportunities for young people, through bespoke individual projects and group programmes. Our projects always have a creative element, and are a great opportunity to enable young people to gain a valuable qualification, encourage active participation and unlock their artistic potential. Tullie House can offer easy access to exhibitions, arts events and links with practicing artists – all requirements of the Bronze and Silver Arts Award.

We’re also supporting the new model of Artsmark, helping schools to revitalise cultural education so that it contributes to school improvement priorities. Find out more about how Artsmark and Arts Award work by visiting curiousminds.org.uk.
