LAST WEEK

THE WEEK THAT WAS ST. GEORGEWhat a great week for St. George-A Phelan Medal-A Sanders Medal-

The Courage Award-Under 19 Goalkicking Award, and winning the sudden death1st Elimination Semi Final.

The Saints had to win yet another match to stay in Finals contention as theyhad to win 5 out of their last 6 home and away games. They smartly despatchedPennant Hills by a 70 point margin. Pennant Hills who had made the final 5Iby a super effort against Newtown the week before were not disgraced. In factthe finish in the 5 in their first season was a creditable performance.

St. George have really hit top form at the right end of the s~ason and the1977 Pennant racestill has4 top teams fighting it out.

Newtown behind all day surprised North Shore in the last 10 minutes ofplay to get home by 8 points. In the vital last quarter Newtown held their marks.'too well for the Bears and deserved to win a game that had been lost to themfor three quarters. .

THIS WEEKThe situation with regard to grounds for the Final series has become some-

what serious with the poor condition of the LeaguesNo. 2 ground Trumper Oval.'

In an effort to preserve what surface is left on Trumper the N.S.w. Leagueput their First Semi Finals on Picken and Erskineville last week end., and thisweek end the games will be played at Picken on Saturday and Trumper Sunday.

In the Second Elimination Semi Final North Shore play St. George with thewinner going on to the Preliminary Final and the loser getting their gear intomothballs.

St. George have had a fairy tale run from 2nd last to 4th place on thecompetition ladder and they have to keep winning to reach the next rung on theladder.

Norths lost to St. George the last time they met on July 24th, which wasthe start of St. George's rush to the Final 5. Both these teams play a similarstyle of football and once again the decision will not be known until the final siren.

Competition leaders Western Suburbs meet Newtown in the Second QualifyingSemi Final.

Traditional rivals these two teams should provide a match that spectators willremember for a long time. These 2 sides met in the home and away games 3'times with Newtown winning the first 2 encounters and Western Suburbs turningthe tables in Round20 on August 21st.

The loser of the Western Suburbs v Newtown clash will play .off in thePreliminary Final next week against the winner of the North Shore and St. Georgegame.

VALE CHRISTOPHER HAYESAs the result of a recent tragic car accident, Chris Hayes lost his life. A

nephew of Western Suburbs Director, Pat Hayes, and cousin to Danny, winner ofthis year's Kealey Medal, Chris represented N.S.w. in 1976, Under 17 Teal CupTeam in Wagga, and was a regular playing member of the Rock Yerong Creek,SeniorTeam. To his family we extend Our heartfelt sympathies on the loss of thispopular and talented young footballer.

THE NEW RANGE OF DAl' TILES NOW AVAILABLE

University of NSW Premiers in both grades of Second Division and deservedlyso particularly A Grade" Even though their form during the season was up and-down, over the final serieS was good and the most consi, stant and that is wherethe difference was. The other teams in the final series though playing good foot-.ball were not consistant and so paid the penalty.

The A Grand Final itself did not produce the anticipated ,close hard gamelthough it could have if Sydney Uni had kicked straight in the first, quarter and:played their best football of the day. Unfortunately they did not keep it up andfrom there on the Wales took command and never really looked troubled.

The Wales backs and centre line proved too good for Sydney whose forwards'found it hard to capitalise on the opportunities they .got whereas Wales withgreater possession of the ball from the centre managed to score more often tocome out easy winners.

In the '08' final it was not so easy for the Wales, it was bad kicking by War'ringah that let them in particularly in the second quarter. The play generallyswung back and forth between goals all day ne,ither team really dominating in any'particular position to get the edge. The only difference being in the forwards withthe Wales forwards leading and making position and Warringah forwards not andthis made the difference with the Wales ending up in front at the finish.

Con'gratulations to University of N.SW. in both grades for winning the bothfinals. To the other teams congratulations also for making the finals a success, also to the Umpires, the umpiring right through was of a good standard and de.serves a mention here. See you all next year.

The Dinner at Newtown was a huge success. Thanks must go to the Direc'tors and staff of Newtown Club, the League Ladies' Committee who organisedt~e night and to the girls who were seconded on the night to lend a hand. TheA.B.C. filmed part of the proceedings and interviewed Phelan winnr, Dale Dalton. This will .go to air on Channel 2, 4.45 p.m. Saturday. September 17.
