FEBRUARYFEBRUARYFEBRUARYFEBRUARYFEBRUARY10 Seminary Board of Regents Meeting.

In my ninth year as Rector of Saint VincentSeminary, I am still saying that this has been awonderful experience for me. One of the chal-lenges has been to balance the administrativeand management responsibilities which a Rec-tor has, with a deep involvement and engage-ment in the life of the Seminary community. Iam happy to say that these two areas in whichI have expended energy have turned out tobe mutually complementary.

Surely the realization of our vision has beenfurthered by the generosity of our manyalumni and friends as well as the bishops anddioceses which support Saint Vincent Semi-nary. Archabbot Douglas, Mr. John Marous,Bishop William Winter, Father Thomas Kram, the Board of Regents and so many volunteershave exercised powerful leadership in ourplanning and fund raising efforts. Withoutthem our task would have been much moredifficult if not impossible.

I am happy to say that, in pace with thesemany blessings, we have also continued togrow at Saint Vincent Seminary, not only innumbers but also spiritually and as a commu-nity. We have quickly filled all of the newrooms provided for seminarians at theRoderick Center. Likewise, the swelling num-ber of seminarians does not allow the newSaint Gregory Chapel to seem empty, but fullof the sound of the prayer and praise of ourSeminary community.

There are many measures of growth. Wecelebrate the dedication of our expanded fa-cilities which will so enhance our mission ofpriestly formation and preparation for thosewho will minister to the people of God. It isfairly easy to see evidence of growth in thechanged physical plant with its new and reno-vated buildings. Likewise, we can with grati-tude count up the pledges of those who havesupported us by sharing their resources with

us. A little more difficult to measure is the vastsupport we have received through the prayerof so many. As far as the Seminary commu-nity goes, we can count heads and therebymeasure our growth. The increasing strengthof our academic and pastoral programs andthe deepening spirit of community life andprayer are a bit more difficult to demonstrateby providing measurable evidence. Nonethe-less, from my vantage point it is very easy torecognize all of this growth, all of these bless-ings. You are among our finest blessings, andyou are among those whom we remembergratefully in prayer as we move “forward, al-ways forward” in our mission at Saint VincentSeminary. We are led forward to a deeperdedication to our Lord Jesus Christ, who is theheart of all we are.

Saint Vincent Seminary Enrollment At 30-Year HighContinuing a trend that began nearly a de-

cade ago, enrollment at Saint Vincent Semi-nary is still growing, reaching a 30-year highthis fall.

This year’s student population includes 84men preparing for the priesthood, who comefrom 16 sponsoring dioceses, seven monaster-ies and eight countries. There are also 19 otherstudents pursuing degrees in theology or reli-gious education, bringing the total number ofstudents registered to 103, the highest numberin more than 30 years.

“We’ve had a consistent increase,” said theVery Rev. Thomas P. Acklin, O.S.B., SeminaryRector. “It’s quite a solid trend.”

In addition to an effort to make theSeminary’s program better known to bishopsbeyond western Pennsylvania, Fr. Thomas at-tributes the growth to the Seminary’slongstanding reputation for developing well-rounded individuals, who are strong spiritually, theologically and pastorally.

“Among the characteristics responsible forthis growth are the priority we place on thepriestly formation program, and our empha-sis on spiritual life,” he said. The skills learnedhere “are integrated and come to the fullestexpression in someone whose faith, prayer lifeand sense of vocation have grown and devel-oped.”

Additionally, Fr. Thomas said, there is abroad range of backgrounds among the stu-dents, as well as the faculty, which further en-riches the seminarians’ education.

“We have architects, lawyers, engineers, health care workers, psychological counselors, social workers and teachers,” he said. “Theyall come with a breadth of experience, andbring a great maturity with them. They oftenhave experienced very deep conversions thathave changed their lives, and we are able tohelp them integrate that conversion into thebroader life of the church and into priestlyministry. Sharing their personal experience

broadens the lives of all of us who live here. Itis a tremendous source of energy for me towitness the process of formation of these men.”

The student population is truly internationalin scope, with seminarians from China, Taiwan,Vietnam, Brazil, El Salvador, India, Colombiaand Haiti. In recent years the Seminary hasalso had students from Poland and Slovakia.

“The international aspect of the Seminaryhas really enriched the composition of the stu-dent body. When you talk about a commu-nity you’re not talking about a very parochialgroup of people all focused on themselves,”Fr. Thomas said. “It’s like life itself. You havethe whole globe here, the universal Church, theChurch throughout the world.

“Many of the students here have sufferedand struggled for the freedom to practice theirfaith in their countries,” he added, noting thattheir experiences have had a great impact onthe faith of the other seminarians.

All of the students, Fr. Thomas noted, willserve in a diocese in the United States, withthe exceptions of the Chinese and Brazilianstudents. Those three will return to their homecountries to serve. Dioceses with students cur-rently at the Seminary include: Altoona-Johnstown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg andPittsburgh in Pennsylvania; Beijing, China;Charlotte, North Carolina; Columbus,Steubenville and Youngstown in Ohio; Tulsa,Oklahoma; Charleston, South Carolina; theVirgin Islands; Wheeling-Charleston, WestVirginia; and the Archdioceses of Atlanta,Georgia and Campinas, Brazil.

Students also represent Benedictine monas-teries including: Holy Cross Abbey, CanonCity, Colorado; Saint Andrew Abbey, Cleve-land, Ohio; Saint Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison,Kansas; Saint Gregory’s Abbey, Shawnee,Oklahoma; Saint Mary’s Abbey, Morristown,New Jersey; Saint Procopius Abbey, Lisle, Il-linois; and Saint Vincent Archabbey.

The Saint Vincent Seminary and CollegeLibrary holdings comprise one of the largesttheological collections in western Pennsylva-nia. It offers a valuable resource to faculty andstudents in the Seminary, as well as to theclergy in the neighboring dioceses and com-munities. It provides pastors, students andclergy with important information aboutCatholic Theology, Judaism, Protestant The-ology and non-Christian religions. The collec-tion contains 100 handwritten manuscripts andearly printed books which date before the year1500. There are hundreds of additional textsfrom the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenthcenturies.

Ten terminals in the library provide accessto the OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog)which can also be accessed by remote personalcomputers via the campus LAN or modems. There are a number of library staff computerswhich can access the OCLC (On-line Com-puter Library Center), on-line Union Catalog

which contains more than 37,000,000 bib-liographic records from some 25,000 partici-pating libraries for cataloguing and interlibraryloan services. An academic computer areaoffers faculty, administrators, seminarians, stu-dents and patrons access to the Internet(World Wide Web).

It is very important that the theological col-lection support faculty research, curriculumand student needs, pastoral and scholarly uses.In order to increase its significance as a centerof learning, the Library must complete its da-tabase by retrospectively placing approxi-mately 40,000 theological titles into the da-tabase and by purchasing additional materi-als (books, journal subscriptions, CD-Rom pro-grams and on-line database programs).

Your help is needed! You have an opportu-nity to enhance the theological collection ofthe Library. “Forward, always forward, everywhereforward,” were the words of ArchabbotWimmer, words the Benedictine communitystill lives by.

Bishop Wuerl commended the Saint Vincentcommunity of today for continuing ArchabbotWimmer’s vision. He noted that the expansionhas already paid dividends as new rooms cre-ated at the Elizabeth J. Roderick Center arealready filled with new seminarians.

Following Mass, Bishop Bosco blessed theElizabeth J. Roderick Center. Mr. David M.Roderick, Jr., gave the reading.

The Most Rev. Nicholas C. Dattilo, Bishopof Harrisburg, blessed the Seminary Residenceand Administrative Offices. Mrs. Margaret R.Bock of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Asso-ciation, gave the reading.

Bishop Wuerl blessed the Chapel of SaintGregory the Great, while Seminarian JamesP. Holland, Jr., of the Pittsburgh Diocese, didthe readings.

Other participants in the blessing servicewere Sister Cecilia Murphy, R.S.M., SeminaryAcademic Dean; Seminarian Douglas E.Dorula, of the Diocese of Greensburg and theRev. Mr. Frantisek Halka, Deacon, Diocese ofAltoona-Johnstown.

At the dinner which followed, Mrs. MaryAnn Johanek, National President of The FirstCatholic Slovak Ladies Association spoke.

“The Benedictine Community of SaintVincent Archabbey has played an importantrole in the development of Slovak-Americanculture and history in the United States for wellover 100 years,” Mrs. Johanek said. “Throughits educational programs in the College andSeminary, Saint Vincent provided opportuni-ties for Slovak-Americans everywhere to en-ter the mainstream of American society. TheBenedictines established churches and schools, founded new religious communities, helpednewly arrived Slovak immigrants with theirphysical and spiritual needs, taught the Slo-vak language and educated generations ofpriests to pass on the Catholic faith to futuregenerations of Slovak-American Catholics.“In recognition of the tremendous contributionof the Benedictine Community to SlovakAmerican culture and history, the First Catho-lic Slovak Ladies Association at its annual con-vention in October of 1995 was pleased toapprove a grant of one million dollars to theBenedictines of Saint Vincent Archabbey insupport of its educational work at SaintVincent Seminary,” she said.“I am honored this evening to announce thatin recognition of the tremendous contributionof the Benedictine Community to Slovak-American culture and history, the establish-ment of the Sväté Písmo i Katolícka Viera Edu-cation Fund at Saint Vincent Seminary. Theessence of what the students at Saint VincentSeminary study is Sacred Scripture (SvätéPísmo), and passing on the Catholic faith

(Katolícka Viera) is the task to which they com-mit themselves in their lives as priests,” Mrs.Johanek said.

The Fund will provide financial assistancefor student scholarships and for faculty devel-opment as well as for maintaining the sacredsciences collection at the Saint Vincent Library.

The major gift for the Center came from Mr.David M. Roderick, Sr., former chairman andchief executive officer of USX, and is namedin memory of his late wife, Mrs. Elizabeth“Bettie” J. Roderick.

Mrs. Roderick was a deeply religious per-son who was devoted to her family and to herCatholic faith. She had a deep desire to spreadthe message of Christ, and that desire will con-tinue in the future through the generations ofpriests, religious and lay persons who will beeducated at The Elizabeth J. Roderick Cen-ter.

Mr. Roderick, also speaking during the din-ner program, said he and his family weregrateful that Mrs. Roderick’s desire to spreadthe message of Christ will be continued throughSaint Vincent Seminary.

projects which reflect the growth and the di-rection in which we want to take the institutionin the future.

“We’ve been blessed with growth in all ofthese areas, and we really look forward tomaking a contribution to the future through thenew programs and facilities that will enable usto meet the needs of the people in the years tocome,” Archabbot Douglas said.

“We’re grateful for the tremendous lead-ership which was provided for the campaign,”said Archabbot Douglas, thanking GeneralCampaign Chairman Mr. John C. Marous, Jr.,former chief executive officer of Westinghouseand a member of the Seminary Board of Re-gents. Archabbot Douglas also commendedthe work of the Most Rev. William J. Winter, auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh, and Mr. WesleyW. von Schack, who were co-chairmen of theSeminary Campaign.

Architect for the projects was TassoKatselas of Pittsburgh, who designed the newPittsburgh International Airport. He has de-signed many of the buildings on the SaintVincent campus.

Part of the Elizabeth J. Roderick Center isentirely new, while part of the three-storybuilding has been renovated. Mr. Katselas wasable to expand the existing structure by anaddition on the west side of the building. Theoriginal building was constructed in 1859 bythe Benedictine brothers of Saint VincentArchabbey. The bricks were made by thebrothers on site and the lumber came fromChestnut Ridge.

“The concept was to use bold, brick-bear-ing walls to repeat the vocabulary of the ex-isting building,” Mr. Katselas said. “By doubleloading the corridor, we were able to capturespace for the new Seminary and maintain thefabric of expression. The result is a quiet, dig-nified structure in a natural setting.”

The new Chapel of Saint Gregory theGreat is nestled beside the northeast cornerof the Elizabeth J. Roderick Center and thesouthwest side of Leander Hall, where theseminarians reside. Access is available fromboth buildings, and an existing brick archwaybetween the two buildings was incorporatedinto the design.

“The chapel location captures the existingbrick arch passageway to create a quiet, inti-mate space of worshop,” Mr. Katselas said.“The vaulted ceiling and clerestory light bathethe interior with diffused light and the warmglow of welcome. The structure of the Chapelis current, the expressive form is timeless.”

These two projects, The Elizabeth J.Roderick Center and the chapel conclude amajor expansion for the Seminary, and followthe recent restoration work at Saint VincentBasilica and construction of the adjoining Par-ish Center.

of 83.The St. Marys, Pennsylvania native came

to Saint Vincent in 1928 to attend the Prepa-ratory School, then the College and Seminary. He was professed as a Benedictine monk in1934, then went to Rome, Italy in 1936 to earna licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Ath-eneum of Sant’Anselmo, the InternationalBenedictine College. He was ordained a priestJuly 16, 1939, in the Abbey of Montecassino,Italy, by the Most Rev. Gregorio DiAmare,O.S.B., Archabbot of Montecassino andBishop of Cassino. He returned to SaintVincent in 1940 to begin teaching theology, and he has been here ever since.

“Every priest I ever called who knows himasked how Paulinus was doing, and when theycome back he’s the one they want to see,” saidthe Rev. Thomas J. Kram, S ‘49, a member ofthe Saint Vincent Seminary Board of Regents.Fr. Kram started a chair for Fr. Paulinus a num-ber of years ago. The chair is now the FatherPaulinus J. Selle Endowment Fund.

“He was faithful to his profession as a pro-fessor of theology,” said Fr. Kram. “He im-pacted the spiritual direction of many priests. He has a captivating, gentle spirit and he hada way with Seminarians that made them feelthey were on the right path. He was alwaysready to give a helping hand.”

“He was a good presider, a real good ex-ample to us of what a priest should be like, liturgically, theologically and socially,” said theRev. Maurice V. O’Connell, S ’72. “He wasmy teacher in the Post-Vatican II time and itwas a very interesting time to study theology. So much of what had been taught was in Latinand it was very static. ... He could take whatthe early church fathers said and show how itwas consistent with what Vatican II was say-ing.

“It was extremely helpful to me because asa young parish priest I was going out and work-ing with priests who were all taught under theold system. I hadn’t been taught that way, butI could understand it because Father Paulinustaught me,” said Fr. O’Connell.

“I knew him when he first got his degree fromRome,” said the Rev. Ed Curry, S ‘47. “I hadhim in class and we kept up the friendship allalong. ... I could count on him with real faithand trust. When I needed help at Holy FamilyParish in West Newton — I was pastor at HolyFamily — he started coming regularly.”

And, Fr. Curry noted, “one of the true signs”of admiration of his character was that Fr.Paulinus served as his confessor, and that ofmany others.

Fr. Paulinus started teaching moral theologyand patrology in the Seminary, then turned todogmatic (now Called systematic) theology. Healso taught in the college’s theology depart-ment from 1940 to 1963, and was Chair ofthe Department from 1949 to 1963. AfterVatican II he started teaching liturgy, which iswhat he taught until retirement.

When told some of the things his former stu-dents say about him, Fr. Paulinus modestly re-called an old Latin saying, “about the dead, say only good things.”

Fr. Paulinus recalled the days when theChurch required theology to be taught in Latin:“Teaching in Latin was a mistake. We were

using theology to teach Latin, because manyof the students did not have enough Latin tounderstand. So what I did, in order to fulfillthe law, and you had to fulfill the law, was Ilectured one day in Latin and the next dayrepeated it in English so they’d get some theol-ogy, too.”

Through the years Fr. Paulinus has servedas Academic Dean of the Seminary (1955 to1965), and was on the College’s Board of Di-rectors for six years. Within the Monastic com-munity, he was Master of Novices (1971 to1980), and served on the Archabbot’s Coun-cil of Seniors for many years. He taught moraltheology from 1940 to 1945, patrology from1941 to 1986, dogmatic theology from 1945to 1971, and fundamentals of liturgy from1967 to 1997.

In 1987 Fr. Paulinus received the Nova EtVetera Award from Saint Vincent Seminaryfor “Outstanding and Distinguished Service tothe Seminary and the Church in priestly for-mation and theological education.” In Febru-ary of 1989 he received the Alumnus of Dis-tinction Award from the Saint Vincent AlumniAssociation in “recognition of his meritoriousservice and lifelong contribution to SaintVincent College.”

That same year he received a special plaquefrom the Saint Vincent Seminary Alumni As-sociation in recognition of “his inspirational lifeof loving service to the seminary community.”

He marked his 50th jubilee as a priest in1989 and continues to serve as a weekendparish assistant at Holy Family in West New-ton.

Fr. Paulinus received an honorary doctor-ate in 1992 from Saint Vincent Seminary, something he says he is very proud of, not onlybecause the recognition was from his peers, but also because, in his 57 consecutive yearsof teaching, he never had the opportunity topursue a doctorate.
