I- [17 pts] The simple pendulum as a harmonic oscillator
The aim of this study is to find the condition to be satisfied so that a simple pendulum can be considered as a
harmonic oscillator.
A simple pendulum (P) is formed of a small bob of mass m = 200 g, suspended from a massless string of length
= 1 m. (P), shifted by an angle 0 with respect to the equilibrium position, is released at to = 0 without initial
velocity. At an instant t, (P) makes with the vertical an angle and moves with a velocity V
. Take g = 10 m/s2
and neglect all frictional forces.
A. Theoretical study
1. The lower position of the bob is taken as zero gravitational potential energy. Give, at the instant t, the
mechanical energy M.E of the system ((P), Earth) in terms of m, g, , and V.
2. Applying the conservation of M.E, show that: 2 =
g2
dt
d2
(cos - cos0).
3. Show that the differential equation that describes the motion of (P) is given by:
g
sin = 0.
4. a) What is the approximation that must be taken in order to consider (P) as a harmonic oscillator?
b) Deduce then the expression of the proper period T0 of this harmonic
pendulum and calculate its value.
B. Experimental study
With an appropriate device, we record three curves 1, 2 and 3. The curve
1 gives the variation of the period of the pendulum in terms of 0 and
the curves 2 and 3 give the variation of the angle in terms of time for
two different values of 0.
1. Determine, from curve 1, the condition for which the pendulum behaves as a
harmonic oscillator.
2. Determine, from curves 2 and 3, the periods T1 and T2 and the amplitudes 01
and 02 of oscillations of the pendulum in the two cases.
3. By comparing T1 and T2 with T0, deduce that this pendulum does not always
behave as a harmonic oscillator.
4. The condition in part A is in agreement with that of part B. Why?

II- [19 pts] Nuclear and tobacco
A The radioisotope polonium
The polonium Po210
84 is a radioactive isotope of the element polonium which emits an
particle during its disintegration. The daughter nucleus is a stable isotope of lead (Pb).
1. Write, justifying it, the equation of the disintegration of Po210
84 .
2. Calculate, in MeV and in J, the energy liberated by this disintegration.
3. Supposing that the polonium nucleus is initially at rest and that there is a conservation
of the linear momentum:
a) determine the speed of the lead daughter and the maximum speed of the particle;
b) deduce, in J and in MeV, the maximum kinetic energy of the particle.
4. We notice that this disintegration is generally accompanied by the emission of a ray of wavelength
= 1.5310-12 m. Show that polonium 210 emits also particles with a kinetic energy of about 4.5 MeV.
Given: 1 u = 1.660-27 kg = 931.5 MeV/c2; e = 1.6010-19 C; h= 6.630-34 Js; c = 3 108 m/s;
mPo = 209.9829 u; mPb = 205.9745 u; m = 4.0026 u.
B- Radioactive polonium in tobacco
For over 35 years, researchers and tobacco corporations have known that tobacco plants absorb lead 210 and
polonium 210 from the soils in which they grow. In addition, tobacco plants gather naturally present radon 222
( Rn222
86 ) from the surrounding air. (WWW.webspawner.com)
1. Radon 222 ( Rn222
86 ), a natural gas, disintegrates through many and - disintegrations and reaches finally the
polonium 210. Determine the numbers x and y of and - emissions respectively.
2. Lead 210, when it is disintegrating, emits one kind of radiation and reaches also the polonium 210.
Determine, justifying it, the nature of this radiation?
3. When you light up a cigarette, the polonium is volatilized, you inhale it, and it is quickly deposited in the
living tissues of the respiratory system. It is estimated that the energy absorbed from polonium 210 radiations
is about 1.2 J per year of smoking two packs of cigarettes per day.
a) Which of the three radiations alpha, beta or gamma is the least penetrating?
b) Deduce that particle is more harmful for the lung than the other radiations.
4. If one chest x-ray could deliver in average 510-4 J to the same tissue, determine the equivalent number of
chest x-rays that receives the lung in one year.
5. When you smoke a cigarette, you run a risk. What could this risk be?

put in series with a generator presenting across its terminals an alternating sinusoidal voltage u of angular
frequency .
In steady state, the circuit carries an alternating sinusoidal current i.
An oscilloscope, connected properly, allows to display the voltages
uBM = uD and uMF = uR respectively across (D) and (R).
A- Determination of the characteristics of the coil

I- [17 pts] L'oscillateur harmonique
vitesse initiale à la date to = 0.
A. Étude théorique

g
sin = 0.

Données: 1 u = 1,660-27 kg = 931,5 MeV/c2; e = 1,6010-19 C; h= 6,630-34 J.s; c = 3 108 m/s;

Part one: Comprehension
A: read the text, and then answer the question that follows. (1 pt. Each)
Farming
The influence of technology has been increasing tremendously year after year. Some countries which were
mainly agricultural a hundred years ago have now become totally industrial. Quite a number of factories have been
built on agricultural land. As there are now fewer farms to serve a much larger popularities, these must be more
efficient to produce as much food as possible. There is no place in the modern agricultural world for inefficient
farmers. Unfortunately, many picturesque aspects of farming are disappearing in farmers' search for efficiency. The
more tractors are used in modern farming, the fewer horses are needed. Everyone agrees that horses are far more
pleasant to look at than tractors, but they are less productive. Cows are usually milked by machinery nowadays and
even fed automatically. There is not much "art" or "poetry" on the modern farm, and the old traditional idea of a
farm as a peaceful and romantic place has been vanishing gradually.
The modern farmer has to be a mechanic, a scientist, an accountant and a "gambler". The more mechanized
farming becomes, the more knowledgeable the farmer has to be. He must understand what machinery is necessary
for his kind of farm, and he must know how to use it properly. He must also understand the new scientific findings
in agriculture, and how to use chemicals and synthetic products to improve his crops. The more workers a framer
employs, the more he must know about the problems of bookkeeping, taxes, and wages. As in any other industry,
most modern farmers find it necessary to rely on the services of an office staff to deal with these problems. And
although he has more modern equipment and far more technological aids than his grandfather had, the farmer
nowadays remains dependent on the weather. As he can never be sure what the weather might be like.
He must be always prepared to take risks and face possibility of either loss or profit.

3- s’insinuer : s’introduire
