This remarkable Thai-style wooden house once belonged to the late Mr. JimThompson, an American silk entrepreneur. The house, now a museum, displaysMr. Thompson's splendid collection of Asian artefacts and antiques. The lovely garden-enclosed compound sitting on the bank of the Saen SaebCanal would have gone completely unnoticed, had it not been for a legacy leftbehind by a middle-aged American man named Jim Thompson. His elegantresidential enclave, comprising six traditional Thai teakwood houses transported

from Ayutthaya and Bangkoks Ban Krua community, echoes Thompsons 30-yearlove affair with Southeast Asian art and cultural heritage

The same goes for his Thai house, which was no ordinary teakwood villacomplex filled with incongruous collections of antiques, but a breathing museum

even then that embodies Thompsons life-long passion and whimsical designchoices. One day in 1967, while at the height of his success, he mysteriouslydisappeared into the Malaysian jungle, and thus began the legacy of JimThompson

Many of them, in the past, were viewed assacred objects that brought fertility and prosperity to the land

The Muay Thai boxer wearsgloves and shorts, usually in red and blue, as international boxers do withadditional armbands and a headband, which has been blessed by his teacher.

Compared with international boxing, Muay Thai has a distinctive feature. In Thaiboxing, each part of the body such as fists, feet, knees, and elbows is allowed to

be used as a weapon to overcome the competitor. Moreover, its combination ofdancing and fighting is unique in style.

Before the match begins, each competitor will perform a dance, or what theycall Wai Kru, accompanied by traditional Thai music. Reasons for doing theperformance are to pay homage to gods and holy spirits for protecting, as wellas to pay respect to their instructors and opponent. A bout of Thai boxingconsists of 5 rounds, which lasts a total of 23 minutes. It takes 3 minutes tofight a round with a 2 minutes break between rounds.

Horse-racing first began in Thailand 100 years ago when King Rama V returnedfrom his state visit to Europe in 1897, and civil servants and students whostudied in Europe organized a horse-racing event at the Phra Main Ground as anact of allegiance to his return. This gave rise to the popularity of Western stylehorse-racing in Thailand. Not long after, His Majesty bestowed a piece of land tobe used as the country's first racecourse, which was the birth of the RoyalBangkok Sports Club.

The general public, however, are allowed to go in for horse-racing events, whichare held every second Sunday (the venue alternates between the Royal BangkokSports Club and the Royal Turf Club). Betting is allowed, and it begins at 50 bahton a 'win-place' basis only (you collect if the horse you bet on comes in first. Ifyou wager to 'place', your horse must come in first or second to collect).Incidentally, gambling is illegal in Thailand, but betting on horses seems to bethe only exception to the rule.

If you have the time,an option might be to take a taxi (15 minutes) or bus (30 minutes) upPhahonyotin Road to Saphan Mai market.
