LECOMTE TOP THREEREMATCH IN RISEN STAR
By Christie DeBernardis
The top three finishers from the Fair Grounds= GIII Lecomte S.
Jan. 13 will face off once again in NOLA, as well as meet a host
of intriguing new faces, as they take their next steps down the
GI Kentucky Derby trail in Saturday=s GII Risen Star S. Lecomte
victor Instilled Regard (Arch) ships back in from California for
Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer. Following his third-out
graduation with a close third in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity
Dec. 9, the $1.05 million OBSMAR buy powered clear to a
decisive 3 3/4-length score last time over this strip.
>TDN Rising Star= Principe Guilherme (Tapit), who won his first
two starts by a combined 18 lengths, checked in second in the
Lecomte after breaking from post 12 and traveling wide
throughout. It was another four lengths back to Snapper Sinclair
(City Zip), who won a stakes race on the turf at Kentucky Downs
last fall. Principe Guilherme is cross-entered in Monday=s GIII
Southwest S. at Oaklawn.
The fresh faces in this race include a pair of unbeaten
sophomores in Noble Indy (Take Charge Indy) and Supreme
Aura (Candy Ride {Arg}). Graduating by an ultra-impressive
8 3/4 lengths when unveiled in a seven-furlong test at
Gulfstream Dec. 3, the WinStar Farm homebred earned the
>TDN Rising Star= nod with a 3/4-length victory when stretched
to 1 1/16 miles last out out in Hallandale Jan. 11. Cont. p3
VACCAREZZA=S CHILDREN SAFE BUT SHAKEN
AFTER PARKLAND SHOOTINGBy Bill Finley
Two sons of Florida-based trainer Carlo Vaccarezza, students
at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, were unharmed
when a shooter stormed into the high school Wednesday and
killed 17 people. However, Vaccarezza said it was a tough time
for his children, particularly Nick, whose close friend Joaquin
Olivier was among those murdered.
Nick is a senior at the school and his other son, Mike, is a sophomore. The trainer said Olivier and some other shooting
victims were at his house only a few days earlier.
ANick is having a tough time,@ Vaccarezza said. ASome of these
kids were at my house only a few days ago. They liked to come
over and hang out with Nicholas. Cont. p5

Happy Birthday, Bruce. Trainer Bruce Headley, pictured with Surf Cat in 2005,
celebrates his 84th birthday on February 17. Ten years ago this weekend, Surf Cat won
his second GII San Carlos H., giving his conditioner his fifth victory in the race. On
Thursday, first-time starter Surfing Star (Surf Cat) continued the birthday tradition with
a maiden special weight win at Santa Anita. In his daughter Karen Headley’s popular
“Ask Bruce” Twitter video series, the trainer shares racing memories, talks about
horsemanship, and answers questions from the public. | Horsephotos

Risen Star cont. from p1 He enters this test off a five-panel bullet in 1:01 flat at trainer
Todd Pletcher=s Palm Beach Downs base Feb. 10. Noble Indy is
from the first crop of GI Florida Derby hero Take Charge Indy,
who has been on a
bit of a hot streak
lately with GIII
Forward Gal S.
winner Take Charge
Paula and Suncoast S.
heroine C.S.
Incharge.
AWe were just
looking for a logical
prep timing wise,@
Pletcher said. AHe=s
been doing really
well and came out of
last race well. There
are essentially
options every weekend, but we feel like this is a good spot for
him. He=s shown a tremendous amount of talent not only in the
mornings, but in both of his races. He=s a horse with a pedigree
that suggests he=ll handle longer distances.@
Fair Grounds regular Mike Stidham saddles the other runner
with a perfect record on the line in Supreme Aura. A debut
winner going six furlongs at Delaware Aug. 9, the chestnut
scored by 3 1/2 lengths sprinting over this strip Jan. 5 and is
trying two turns for the first time Saturday.
Ed DeRosa of TwinSpires.com takes on TDN's Steve Sherack and
Brian DiDonato as they handicap each prep race leading up to
the GI Kentucky Derby. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets
--highest bankroll after the Lexington S. wins.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 9 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • FEBRUARY 17, 2018
DeRosa: Last Week - Based on Vouch=s performance in an
allowance race earlier this week, it probably worked in my favor
that I scratched into Catholic Boy--even if the favorite
disappointed at odds on, I have to think the $130 I booked for
his second-place finish is more than the 0 I likely would have
gotten with Vouch. Bankroll: $770.
GII Risen Star S - Both Instilled Regard and Noble Indy intrigue
most, and I=ll trust the morning line maker that the latter will go
off a longer price and thus is a better play than the Lecomte
winner, who returns to New Orleans for Hall of Fame trainer
Jerry Hollendorfer. Selection: #2 Noble Indy (5-1).
El Camino Real Derby - While I=m not picking my fellow Ohio
native in the Risen Star, I do think he can get the job done in the
El Camino Real with Choo Choo, who is one of only two of the
nine entrants of this Kentucky Derby points race nominated to
the Triple Crown. Selection: #4 Choo Choo (9-5).
Sherack: Last Week - Vino Rosso (third at 2-1) seems to be the
one that everyone wants going forward out of the Sam F. Davis,
but that really doesn=t do me much good here, does it? Bankroll:
$220.
GII Risen Star S. - Principe Guilherme=s first two attempts were
impressive enough to think that he can move forward off a solid
runner-up finish as the 6-5 chalk after covering all the ground in
the GIII Lecomte S. He is drawn wide again here, but the longer
run to the first turn and added distance should both play to his
favor. Selection: #9 Principe Guilherme (7-2).
El Camino Real Derby - Paved looks like the one to beat in this
ambitious spot, taking on the boys after a visually impressive
maiden breaker at this distance over the Santa Anita lawn.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 5 OF 9 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • FEBRUARY 17, 2018
Sherack Throwdown cont.
Paved=s co-owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners also won
last weekend=s California Oaks S. at Golden Gate with European
invader Consolida (GB). Selection: #1 Paved (2-1).
DiDonato: Last Week - I=m kind of disgusted with myself for my
Sam F. Davis decision last week. After original play Vouch
scratched and took a bunch of the speed out of the race, I
ended up on longshot maiden deep closer Navy Armed Guard,
rather than likely loose leader Flameaway. Oops.
Bankroll: $1710.
GII Risen Star S - I=m generally somewhat hesitant to expect a
horse who has been very effective sprinting to stretch out
successfully, but Supreme Aura looks like one who will relish the
added real estate. He sat fairly close in both of his blowout
sprint wins, but he never seemed particularly comfortable doing
it--he wasn=t just cruising, he was pushed along to keep pace. He
appeared to just be getting going at the end of his six-furlong
journeys, and on pedigree he should want to go farther being
that he=s by Candy Ride from a family of pretty much all two-
turn horses. The trainer/jockey combo of Stidham and Bravo is
deadly, and I like those stamina-building six-furlong breezes.
Selection: #6 Supreme Aura (8-1).
El Camino Real Derby - I=ve been touting Paved since before her
debut off a very visually impressive sales breeze at OBS March,
and was glad to see her put it all together with a dominant
effort going this distance over the Santa Anita turf last out. She
enjoyed an admittedly easy trip that day, but she also settled
much better under Drayden Van Dyke, who fits her perfectly.
This looks like very smart spotting for this filly--she clearly likes
nine panels, should handle the Tapeta well given how she did in
Ocala, and certainly doesn=t face the scariest group of males
ever assembled. She=ll get pace as well and should blow past
them all late. Selection: #1 Paved (2-1).
Vaccarezza's Children Safe but Shaken cont. from p1
Vaccarezza continued, AThis kid who died, he was Venezuelan.
His family had immigrated to the U.S. when he was little and he
would come to me and tell me it was his dream to be an
American citizen. He got his citizenship three days ago.@
Vaccarezza said his oldest son also knew the shooter, Nikolas
Cruz, who was in his same senior class before being expelled.

Nicholas Vaccarezza=s best friend Joaquin Olivier
was killed in the Parkland, Florida shooting
Once his children returned to the safety of their home, they
told their father of a scene they will never forget.
AThey saw the shooting and they saw mayhem,@ he said.
AWhen the fire alarm went off everyone was running and they
were trampling bodies all over the place. There were 17
casualties, and a lot of people were wounded. People got shot,
in the arm, the leg, they kept going. So many people had no
chance, especially with the caliber of gun the guy had.@
Vaccarezza is the co-owner of Frank & Dino=s in Boca Raton
and has planned a fundraiser to be held at the restaurant on
Sunday, Feb. 25 from 2-9 p.m.
AWe=re closing the restaurant that day and there will be free
food, free beverages, free alcohol,@ he said. AIt is a fundraiser
and everything we take in will go to the families. Everybody is
welcome and we hope people will come and donate.@
Nicholas is the racing enthusiast among the two brothers and
spends much time at his father=s barn. He says he has made
many friends on the backstretch and several reached out to
Carlo to offer their sympathies and to see if there were anything
they could do to help.
AHe is a very well-liked kid around the racetrack,@ Vaccarezza
said. AKiaran McLaughlin, Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher, Chuck
Simon, they all sent messages. They said that if any way it would
help Nick he could come around their barns any time he wanted
to say hello. The entire racing community been very
supportive.@
While Vaccarezza doesn=t lose sight of the fact that his family
was among the lucky ones, that his children came home from
high school alive, he knows it will take a long time to heal.
AIt=s a tough road ahead,@ he said. AI think my kids are strong,
but they=re still just kids. You see shootings at Columbine, Sandy
Hook, at the school in Kentucky, you feel sorry for the families.

a lot of pain and suffering. But I felt so guilty I couldn=t be there

MONOMOY GIRL MUST OVERCOME PACE
PRESSURE IN RACHEL ALEXANDRA Nearly undefeated Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) headlines a strong
group of eight set to contest Saturday=s GII Rachel Alexandra S.
at the Fair Grounds, but if she=s to get the job done, she=ll have
to navigate an expected fast pace. The Brad Cox pupil opened
her account with a pair of victories on the grass, then blew the
doors off Churchill=s Rags to Riches S. at a one-turn main-track
mile Oct. 29. Odds-on for that venue=s GII Golden Rod S. going
this 1 1/16-mile distance Nov. 25, she struggled to maintain a
straight path in the lane and was nipped on the line by since
unseen Road to Victory (Quality Road). Drawn widest in stall
eight, the chestnut will either have to find a way to settle or out-
foot several swift types drawn inside of her.
AI=m glad that we have a two-turn race under our belt,@ Cox
said. AI think we got a good post where we can sit off of the
speed or we can be the speed. She was a little unfortunate not
to win the Golden Rod. I don=t really know that we have any
excuses other than
we just got nailed
right at the wire.
She=s done
extremely well, and
she=s ready to go.@
Two of the likely
favorite=s stiffest
challenges could
come from a pair of
stablemates to Road

Wonder Gadot
(Medaglia d=Oro)
and Heavenly Love (Malibu Moon). The former romped in
Woodbine=s GIII Mazarine S. in October, and in the GII
Demoiselle S. two back at Aqueduct Dec. 2. She was run down
late in the local Silverbulletday S. Jan. 13. Heavenly Love
followed up an emphatic grassy graduation with an equally easy
tally in the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland Oct. 6. She
finished far back at 3-1 in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies,
however, and was fifth with a traffic-filled trip in the
Silverbulletday.
AThere=s going to be some serious pace on Saturday and we=ll
sit right behind it,@ Mark Casse said. AWe=re not going to let
Brad=s filly get too far away.@
One interesting closer is Patrona Margarita (Special Rate).
She=s been off since upsetting the GII Pocahontas S. at Churchill
Sept. 16.
>GOGGLES AS WHIP= EARNS $76,000
WINCAND A $200 FINEBy T.D. Thornton
Jockey David Cabrera was on the lead and under pressure
aboard an 8-1 filly approaching the final furlong of the fourth
race Feb. 10 when the whip slipped from his grip and skittered
uselessly behind him in the Oaklawn Park slop.
The 25-year-old rider didn=t waste much time before instinct
kicked in. He ripped down a pair of goggles from atop his helmet
with his right hand and used them as a substitute crop to propel
the 4-year-old La Key (J P=s Gusto) forward, prevailing by
three-quarters of a length in the $76,000 allowance (VIDEO).
Such a spontaneous tactic is not unprecedented in North
American racing. Nylon helmet covers, for example, have
occasionally been employed in this manner over the years.
But in the state of Arkansas, striking a horse with anything
other than an Aordinary whip@ is explicitly forbidden.Cont. p8

David Cabrera making good use of his goggles aboard La Key |Coady
Thus, on Feb. 16, Cabrera was hit with a $200 fine from the
Arkansas Racing Commission for violation of state Rule #1214,
which states, in part, ANo electrical or mechanical device or
other expedient designed to increase or decrease the speed of a
horse, or that would tend to do so, other than the ordinary
whip, shall be possessed by any one or applied by any one to a
horse at any time.@
Cabrera, who entered Friday=s racing first in wins (18) and
second in earnings ($678,299) while competing in his first full
season at Oaklawn, won=t be appealing the ruling according to
his agent, Jose AJoe@ Santos, Jr.
AI think David feels the same way that I do, that if he didn=t do
that, then he wouldn=t have won a $76,000 pot, so you=ve got
take your fine if that=s what it comes down to,@ Santos said via
phone on Friday. AIt definitely was a difference-maker in getting
her home, so I=m glad he had the quick thinking to do that. It=s
just a fine for the jockey. The purse doesn=t get taken away. No
fine to the owner or trainer, nothing like that.
ADavid told me there have been a couple times in his career
when he dropped the whip, and that was the first time he=s ever
thought of the goggles,@ Santos continued. AHe said he tried
shaking the reins at her and gave her a little kick, and it just
wasn=t the reaction that he wanted. He knew he had more horse
left. It was just kind of spur-of-the-moment thinking and he
decided, >All right, time to go to the goggles.=@

As part of a new series, we asked a number of people not born
into racing families why they got into the sport, and what their
first racing memory was.
BRIAN DiDONATO, Racing Editor, Thoroughbred Daily News &
Managing Partner, Franklin Ave. Equine
My earliest racing memory is like a lot of peoples'--it was going
to Saratoga with my parents as a kid as something else to do
during vacations to Lake George. I remember having fun there,
and trying to pick winners based on the jockeys= and trainers=
names and all that, but I didn't get really into it until college.
I had a couple of friends at school who liked to gamble like I
did, and since we weren't 21 yet and couldn't go to the nearby
casinos, we'd drive after class (never during...) some 45 minutes
to the closest OTB and play the night tracks. I remember
watching a then up-and-coming Fabulous Strike romp in some
race at Mountaineer or Penn National when I probably
should=ve been back at the dorm doing just about anything else.
Studying the races was way, way more interesting than what I
was studying in school, and I immersed myself in learning the art
and science of handicapping whenever I had free time. Rather
than looking for an internship at a law firm or wherever else I
might have during the summer between my junior and senior
years, I contacted NYRA about internship opportunities. I was
lucky enough--still not entirely sure how--to get a job working
for Fran LaBelle in the press box at Saratoga. I saw new parts of
the sport and industry, and actually got within 30 feet of a
horse, and that=s when I knew for sure that my hobby was
something I wanted to try to make a career out of. Cont. p9
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 9 OF 9 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • FEBRUARY 17, 2018
Why Racing cont.
Unfortunately I graduated in 2009 right after the financial
crisis, and searched for a full-time job for probably a year--both
in and out of racing--before finally landing a gig at the TDN. I still
didn=t know for a while if a lifelong career in racing was viable,
and my parents continued for years to beg me to apply to law
school, but every time I contemplated looking for opportunities
in other fields I just couldn=t bring myself to leave racing. It=s just
too exciting and too mentally stimulating. There=s always
something to watch, or root for, or bet on. I=ve since started
doing my own bloodstock/stable management stuff, and can=t
imagine ever doing anything else and hope I=ll never have to.
Now instead of asking me to apply to law school, my parents ask
how the horses are doing, as they've gotten very into racing as
well and have become owners along with me.
I just hope that the industry moves towards a correctly priced
betting product that can compete in the current landscape--not
just for the obvious reasons, but also because it=ll help bring in
new fans/bettors who will later become industry participants
like I and so many others have.
Sports betting: New Jersey expects Supreme Court win and is

Belmont Park EHM Quarantine Update:
The horse at the center of a suspected case of equine herpes
myeloencephalopathy (EHM) that led to the quarantine of Barn
10 at Belmont Park was euthanized around mid-day Friday after
her condition deteriorated.
The horse, a 4-year-old filly trained by Tom Albertrani,
developed a fever Monday, Feb. 12, and started treatment
under the care of a private veterinarian. On Thursday evening,
she began exhibiting neurologic symptoms.
That evening, Barn 10 was put under a 21-day quarantine,
overseen by Dr. Anthony Verderosa, Director of NYRA's
Veterinary Department, and in consultation with the New York
State Gaming Commission.
By Friday, the filly's health had continued to worsen, and the
decision was made to humanely euthanize her. The horse will be
taken to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in
Ithaca, New York for a full necropsy.
All standard precautions and biosecurity measures are in place
for the quarantine, and at this time no other horses in the barn
have developed fever or exhibited symptoms.
All 20 horses currently stabled in Barn 10 will be monitored
closely for fever and other signs of illness. During the quarantine
period, these horses will not be permitted to run or enter races.
They will have isolated training hours following the normal
closure of the training track at 10 a.m.

Rusty Arnold Facing Suspension:
Veteran trainer Rusty Arnold will be suspended for 90 days by
Kentucky stewards for two positive tests for ractopamine,
according to Paulick Report . Both date back to September 2016
at Kentucky Downs. Ractopamine, a Class 2 drug with a Class A
penalty, is a food additive. Trainer Joe Sharp is also facing a 30-
day suspension for a positive test for ractopamine. All three
positives occurred within five days of each other at Kentucky
Downs. Other positives to ractopamine that same year were
linked to contamination in horse feed.

second over a fast fading Donworth. The winner is a half-brother
to Doctor Mounty (Street Sense), SP, $174,160; and the juvenile
colt Great Sense (Street Sense). His dam was bred back to

AQUILA (c, 3, Union Rags--Sangrita {GSW, $171,508}, by Mr.
Greeley), a full-brother to Tequilita, MGSW, $535,640,
summoned $685,000 at last year=s OBS March sale after
breezing an eighth in :10 flat. A non-factor seventh on debut at
Los Alamitos Dec. 14, the chestnut improved to be second next
out going a mile over this strip Jan. 19 and was given a 7-2
chance to go one better this time. Seizing the early advantage,
the chestnut loped along through comfortable early fractions of
:24.01 and :48.07. Put under pressure as Route Six Six (Quality
Road) charged up on his outside turning for home, Aquila found
another gear with the help of some right-handed reminders
from Martin Pedroza, closing the door on his pursuer in the final
sixteenth and kicking clear to a 2 1/4-length success. Route Six
Six finished six lengths clear of third-place finisher Soltero
(Blame). GII Chilukki S. heroine Sangrita, a half-sister to GISW
sire Offlee Wild (Wild Again), produced a Hard Spun filly in 2017
and just had a Union Rags colt Thursday. Cont. p5

the headgear back on while returning to the turf, the 2-1 chalk
settled midfield on the fence through the middle furlongs, came
out three deep into the stretch and dove home late to register a

CHANGES AFOOT FORFRENCH RACING
PROGRAMME
As the finishing touches are made to the redeveloped
Longchamp--or ParisLongchamp as it has been rebranded--
France Galop has announced a number of changes to the
domestic Flat racing programme for 2018.
The racing public will have the chance to attend the first of
34 meetings this year at the upgraded racecourse on Sunday,
Apr. 8, which will include the G2 Prix d'Harcourt, G3 Prix La
Force and G3 Prix Vanteaux. The official launch will be held
three weeks later on Apr. 29, the highlight of that day's card
being the G1 Prix Ganay. Later in the season, Longchamp will
also benefit from the relocation of the G1 Criterium
International from Saint-Cloud. The 1400-metre juvenile contest
will be run on the same card as the G1 Prix Royal-Oak, which this
year takes place on Oct. 28.
Despite some speculation among those connected to the
breeze-up sales circuit that the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains
and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches might remain in Deauville,
where they had been staged for the past two years,
unsurprisingly the first French Classics of the season will return
to their traditional Parisian home to be run on Sunday, May 13.
Longchamp is losing a race to Deauville, however, with the
G3 Prix Daphnis being shortened in distance from 1800 to 1600
metres and run on Aug. 21 at the Normandy seaside venue
instead of its previous slot in Paris in June.
Cont. p2
>PROMISE= AIMS HIGH IN BALANCHINE Godolphin=s Promising Run (Hard Spun) appears the start of
the show in the 1800-metre $200,000 G2 Balanchine at Meydan
on Saturday. Precocious enough to win the 2015 G2 Rockfel S.,
the Saeed Bin Suroor runner saluted in last January=s G2 Al
Rashidiya, but had gone winless in her next four starts, including
a seventh two starts later in the G1 Jebel Hatta in March. After a
six-month break, the bay was fourth in the Listed Foundation S.
at Goodwood on Sept. 27, and went one better in Lingfield=s all-
weather Nov. 2 Listed Fleur de Lys Fillies= S. Finally back in the
winner=s circle by 4 1/2 lengths in the Jan. 25 G2 Cape Verdi
going 200 metres shorter against several of these, she leaves
from barrier six.
A group winner in both England and the UAE, Opal Tiara (Ire)
(Thousand Words {GB}) brings a string of fourths into this
contest, first behind MGSW Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the
G3 Singspiel S. over course and distance on Jan. 11 and in the
1600m Cape Verdi in the wake of Promising Run, with Aljuljalah
(Exchange Rate) third last out.
Furia Cruzada (Chi) (Newfoundland), a champion in her native
land, captured the 2017 G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2, but most
recently completed the superfecta in Thunder Snow (Ire)
(Helmet {Aus})=s G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 on Feb. 8.
Saudi Arabia=s Tiaemah (KSA) (Premium Tap), the mount of
Frankie Dettori, is an intriguing outsider, and is currently riding a
three-race winning streak at King Abdulaziz Racecourse. The Neil
Bruss trainee won the 1800m Prince Bader bin Abdualaziz Cup
(KSA-G2) by 7 3/4-lengths on Jan. 19 (video, SC 6)and her
combined margin of victory for those trio of winning efforts sits
at 26 1/4 lengths. However, the Balanchine will be her first time
trying turf.

EUROPEAN-BRED WINNERS
Changes Afoot for French Racing Programme cont.
Previously for 3-year-old colts and geldings, it will now be also
be open to fillies. Deauville's G3 Prix Quincey, which was
previously open to 3-year-olds, will now be for 4-year-olds and
up. Recent promotions announced by the European Pattern
Committee include some enhancements to Deauville's juvenile
programme, with the Prix du Calvados rising to Group 2 status
and the Prix Six Perfections to Group 3 level.
Another new feature of the Longchamp calendar is the
introduction of a series of evening meetings every Thursday
between May 17 and July 12, starting at 6.15pm. Other changes
include the fact that the G1 Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp,
which is usually held on the same weekend as the traditional Arc
trials, will be run a week earlier on Sunday, Sept. 9.
Explaining the adjustments, which include a number of
changes to the French jump racing programme, France Galop's
Director General Olivier Delloye said, "[These changes are] the
result of the desire of the president and vice-presidents to
review the calendar and the programme. Our goal, which is
shared with LeTrot and PMU, is to offer a more attractive
product to the bettor while respecting the fundamental
structure of the programme in order to offer horses of all levels
the opportunity to run and to optimise their chances. The aim of
the programme is not only to enhance support for the betting
public, but also to ensure that it helps to strengthen French
breeding to assist all those involved in that sector. It's a subtle
balance."

THE TAJ MAHAL TO BE HOWLEY'S FIRST
RUNNER Liam Howley, who in November was granted a licence to take
over the training duties at Lloyd Williams's Macedon Lodge in
Victoria, looks set to have his first runner next week.
According to racing.com, Williams has confirmed that the
former Aidan O'Brien trainee The Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire})--a full-brother to Group 1 winners Gleneagles (Ire),
Marvellous (Ire) and Happily (Ire)--will be his stable's first runner
since former assistant trainer Howley succeeded Robert
Hickmott as trainer.
A graduate of the Godolphin Flying Start course, Howley has
also worked with trainers Lee Freedman, Robbie Griffiths and
Robert Smerdon. Among a host of well-bred imports at
Macedon Lodge, he currently has under his care the 2017
G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling (GB) (High
Chaparral {Ire}), who, along with five of his stablemates, holds
an entry for the G1 Australian Cup at Flemington on Mar. 10.

Rekindling is likely to remain in Australia to contest the
G1 Sydney Cup before returning to Joseph O'Brien's Irish stable.
The Taj Mahal, winner of the G2 Zipping Classic on his most
recent start on Nov. 18, is set to reappear in next Saturday's
G2 Peter Young S. at Caulfield.
GOLD COAST CO-TOPPER DOWN TO DEBUT
by Alan Carasso
Tchaikovsky (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), for whom
bloodstock agent James Harron paid a joint-top price of
A$1.3 million at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale (click for Kelsey Riley=s sales coverage), is entered for his
first career appearance in the A$150,000 Luxury Network Pierro
Plate that goes as race two on Saturday=s program at Royal
Randwick.
Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and carrying the same
dark green and gold epaulettes as >TDN Rising Star= and
G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon
{Aus}) and last year=s G1 Blue Diamond S. runner-up and fellow
>Rising Star= Pariah (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), Tchaikovsky
has logged a pair of recent barrier trials at Randwick, finishing a
close third of eight Jan. 29 over 745m before lunging late to
>win= his latest going an extended five furlongs Feb. 12 (video).
AHe's a really nice horse," Peter Snowden told Racing and
Sports. AThis will be a good test for him. There's a couple of
seasoned horses in there that have won already but he's a colt
with good ability. He's got a fantastic attitude and that's what I
like most about him. He's really come on since that second trial
on Monday and he looks a picture.@
Bred by Arrowfield, the Sept. 8 foal is a son of Ballet Blue (Aus)
(Stravinsky), a half-sister to four full black-type winners,
including Group 2-winning juvenile The Heavyweight (Aus)
(Zeditave {Aus}).
Of the four other horses to realise seven-figure pricetags at
the Gold Coast a little more than a year ago, two have already
faced the starter. Angel (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), an A$1.2-
million half-sister to G1SW Miracles of Life (Aus) (Not a Single
Doubt {Aus}), was impressive in scoring first time out at Geelong
Jan. 4 for the Coolmore/Stonestreet partnership, while Adana
(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), an Arrowfield-consigned A$1.1-million
purchase by Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster, was a close second
on Warwick Farm debut Feb. 14.
Following scratches, Tchaikovsky will have to deal with the
inside barrier in a field of eight in the 1100m event, which jumps
at 1:25pm (9:25pm Friday evening US Eastern time).
GOLD DREAM LOOKING FOR >MOORE=
FEBRUARY SUCCESS by Alan Carasso
A full field of 16 dirt specialists will load the gate Sunday
afternoon at Tokyo Racecourse for the running of the
G1 February S. (1600m), which offers the winner a fees-paid
berth in the 2018 GI Breeders= Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.
Gold Dream (Jpn) is by 2003 February S. hero Gold Allure (Jpn)
(Sunday Silence) and looks to successfully defend his title,
having defeated Best Warrior (Majestic Warrior) by a neck
12 months back. Off the board in his next three runs through the
middle of the season, the 5-year-old was last seen just getting
the better of T M Jinsoku (Jpn) (Kurofune) in the G1 Champions
Cup (1800m) Dec. 3. He=ll have to work out a trip from gate
14 beneath Ryan Moore, whose short-term contract in Japan
expires this weekend.
AI think we=ve established that the Tokyo 1,600 is his best
race,@ trainer Osamu Hirata said. AThere is a problem with the
gate though. If he doesn=t miss the break too badly, I think he
has a chance this year too.@
Best Warrior was third to retired dirt star Copano Rickey (Jpn)
(Gold Allure {Jpn}) when that one was winning his second
February S. in 2015 before improving by one spot last year.

Sunrise Nova (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}) will be well backed and
is another that could give his sire a remarkable fifth winner of
this race since 2010. Course-and-distance winner of the
G3 Unicorn S. last June, the chestnut prepped for this with a
solid runner-up effort behind Nonkono Yume (Jpn) (Twining) in
the G3 Negishi S. (1400m) over this track Jan. 28.
London Town (Jpn), a son of 2006 February S. winner Kane
Hekili (Jpn) (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}), was the easy winner of the
Keeneland Korea Cup (1800m) at Seoul in September, but needs
to do better than his last two, including a fifth in the G1 Tokyo
Daishoten Dec. 29.
Gold Dream, London Town and Nonkono Yume have also been
given entries for the $10-million G1 Dubai World Cup at Meydan
Mar. 31.
SINGAPORE HOTY RESUMES IN FORTUNE
BOWL by Alan Carasso
Infantry (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), crowned Singapore Horse of the
Year last month, makes his 2018 debut in the S$200,000 Fortune
Bowl S., the featured event on a rare Saturday of racing at Kranji
Racecourse.
Trainer by Alwin Tan, the 5-year-old was victorious in last
year=s Singapore Derby (2000m) last July and in the Kranji Mile
in October despite suffering a cut to his near-hind fetlock in the
race. He makes his first start since finishing fifth to Gilt Complex
(NZ) (Gold Centre {Aus}) in the Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) last
November and has trialled well recently under big-race rider
Ryan Curatolo.
Clarton Super (Aus) (Swift Alliance {Aus}) races first-up for
better than three months, having most recently registered a $51
(9-1) upset over the reopposing Fortune Winner (Arg) (Include)
in the EW Barker Trophy over Saturday=s course and distance
Nov. 11.
Also in the field are Well Done (NZ) (Falkirk {NZ}), the 2016
Singapore Derby hero; Forever Young (Run Away and Hide),
who defeated Jupiter Gold (Aus) (Congrats) in last year=s
Singapore Guineas (1600m); and Nova Strike (NZ) (Red Giant),
third to Infantry in the Derby and later the clear-cut winner of
the Colonial Chief S. (1700m AWT).
