Out of nearly 3,800 hospitals, only 23 received the 2009 Premier Award for Quality. In 2010? Even fewer. And a mere half-dozen hospitals in the entire country earned both. Over the past year, we also opened our new Pavilion — the first of its kind in the state — with all private rooms. And we again received the Magnet® designation for nursing excellence, something less than three percent of hospitals can claim. But while we’re proud of these recent achievements, what they really add up to is this: the true winner is you. And that’s exactly how we want it.

Only 6 hospitals in the country.

Only 1 where you live.

Paoli earns the Premier Award for Quality—again.

From the DramaturgGraham Graves

Legacy of Light is set in present day America and mid-18th century France. In the course of the action these two settings run in parallel and gradually mingle as the characters and themes interact. The dominant intellectual themes of the play are scientific and philosophical; the science drawing heavily on the science of the 18th century Enlightenment and the extraordinary propositions of relativity and quantum physics in our own time. Émilie du Châtelet made important and original theoretical contributions to the development of the latter although these were not adequately recognized in her lifetime. Even now, like present day fictional protagonist Olivia, the role and the achievements of a woman in astrophysics or science still provoke that mild astonishment that betrays stereotyping by conventional role expectations. We need to be reminded also that Voltaire’s moral and intellectual support of Émilie’s efforts also rose above the conventional prejudices of his own day, and especially those of the French Court of which he was a scathing, witty and persistent critic, even at the risk of imprisonment and death.

The play explores and contrasts the past and the present, especially in the progress of the march of reason and science, and the optimism it is widely presumed to justify. Both words (“optimism” and “progress”) were coined in the 18th century. The development of physics and cosmology are excitingly portrayed by the central women protagonists, Émilie du Châtelet and Olivia. We should reflect on what the play tells us about progress, or lack of it, in gender equality, especially the lack of opportunities and encouragement offered to women in science and technology outside the “nurturing professions.” Some leading figures of The Enlightenment (though notably not Voltaire) were ambivalent about the role of women in the march of reason; this was the age that found “scientific” and spurious reasons for declaring that women were inferior to men in this respect. The same ambivalence about the abolition of slavery was also widespread. Many modern historians and commentators view the surge of “globalization” in recent decades, and in all spheres of human activity, as a consequence of unrestrained “Enlightenment” rationality. The evidence of current financial, political and moral confusion in the so-called “global society” suggests that there is still a long way to go to secure the triumph of reason in human affairs. The Enlightenment is still unfolding, perhaps even in retreat.

Science Glossary Brown dwarf: Stars are formed from collapsing gases which have sufficient mass to generate their own heat and, therefore, light. Planets are formed from the dust left over from these colossal events, which is why they are captured by stars. Brown dwarfs are “failed stars” – bodies which collapsed, but with insufficient mass and density to generate their own light.

Dark matter: A hypothetical form of matter that is believed to make up 90% of the universe; it is invisible (does not absorb or emit light) and does not collide with atomic particles, but exerts gravitational force.

Elements of the Philosophy of Newton: Voltaire published this book which he wrote with help from Émilie (her Latin was apparently more fluent than his, and Newton, like most scientists of the period, wrote in Latin for an academic and international readership). Voltaire’s book helped to popularize Newton’s theories with French audiences.

Gravitational collapse: This is the point at which massive objects collapse under their own gravity. The force is so great that not even light can escape; the consequence is a black hole in the universe.

Newton’s Laws of Motion: Newton’s three laws of motion are physical laws that define the relationship between the forces acting on a body and its motion due to those forces. The first law states that every body remains in a state of rest unless it is acted upon by an external unbalanced force. The second law states that acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated), the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object). The third law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Newton’s Principia (Philosophiae Naturalis Principiae Mathematica): Published in 1686 with help from Sir Edmund Halley, the Principia states Newton’s Laws of Motion, the foundation of classical mechanics. Émilie translated the Principia into French, but it was not published until 1759, ten years after her death. Émilie’s Principia is still widely read in France.

Rubin, Vera: an American astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation rates. Rubin is credited with proving the existence of “dark matter,” or nonluminous mass, and forever altering our perceptions of the universe.

Stellar nursery: A region within a nebula where stars are forming.

Vega: Vega is the brightest star in the constellation of Lyra, one of the brightest in the night sky and one of the closest stars (“only” 25 million light years away) to our solar system. Olivia calls her planet, which revolves around Vega, Vega B.

Biography of Émilie du ChâteletAlthough recognized for many years by the mathematical and scientific communities

as an impressive intellect, Émilie du Châtelet’s contributions have been obscured with time. She scoffed at societal conventions, rebelling against the prejudices which barred her from intellectual debate because she was a woman. Her translation of Newton’s Principia, published ten years after her death, remains the only French translation of the text.

Born on December 17, 1706 and christened Gabrielle Émilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, the future Marquise du Châtelet grew up under privileged circumstances. Her father, the Baron de Breteuil, was Principal Secretary and Introducer of Ambassadors to Louis XIV, and thus she spent the early years of her life in the presence and company of many notable celebrities and thinkers of the day. At the age of sixteen, her father introduced her to the Court of Versailles and by age nineteen she had chosen a husband: Marquis Florent-Claude Chastellet (Voltaire standardized the spelling of her last name to “Châtelet” in his writings). As was common for her station in life, the spouses understood each would have extramarital affairs; Émilie had affairs before and throughout her marriage, usually with men whom she found intellectually stimulating, such as her mathematics tutor and member of the Academy of Sciences Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis.

Émilie had three children with Châtelet: a daughter in 1726, a son in 1727, and finally a second son in 1733 who died in 1734. Her husband, a military man, spent much of his time on garrison duty away from home, so Émilie was free to enjoy the society of Paris, as well as to explore and expand her mind.

Émilie met Voltaire upon his return to France after his self-imposed exile. From 1734 until her death in 1749, the pair spent their time investigating energy, moral philosophy, metaphysics, history, critical deism, and physics. They theorized and worked proofs on Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz, both of whom were considered anathema by the French government for not following the same line of thought as Descartes. In 1748 Émilie fell in love with Marquis de Saint-Lambert and became pregnant. Fearing that at the age of forty-two childbirth would kill her, Émilie redoubled her exertions in completing Newton’s Principia. She completed the translation shortly before giving birth to a daughter on September 9, 1749 and died the next day from an infection contracted during childbirth.

Biography of VoltaireFrançois-Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire (1694-1778), was a prominent playwright,

author, and philosopher in 18th century France. In 1726, Voltaire insulted the powerful young nobleman, Chevalier de Rohan, and was given two options: imprisonment or exile. He chose exile and from 1726 to 1729 lived in England. While in England, Voltaire was attracted to the philosophy of John Locke and the ideas of mathematician and scientist Sir Isaac Newton. He studied England’s constitutional monarchy and its religious tolerance. Voltaire was particularly interested in the philosophical rationalism of the time and in the study of the natural sciences. After returning to Paris he wrote a book praising English customs and institutions. It was interpreted as criticism of the French government, and in 1734 Voltaire was forced to leave Paris again.

At the invitation of a highly intelligent woman friend, Émilie du Châtelet, Voltaire moved into her Chateau de Cirey near Luneville in eastern France. They studied the natural sciences together for several years. In 1746, Voltaire was voted into the L’Académie Française. In 1749, after the death of Émilie du Châtelet and at the invitation of the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great, he moved to Potsdam (near Berlin in Germany). In 1753, Voltaire left Potsdam to return to France.

In 1759, Voltaire purchased an estate called Ferney near the French-Swiss border, where he lived until just before his death. Ferney soon became the intellectual capital of Europe. Voltaire worked continuously throughout the years, producing a constant flow of books, plays and other publications. He wrote hundreds of letters to his circle of friends. He was always a voice of reason. Voltaire was often an outspoken critic of religious intolerance and persecution.

Voltaire returned to a hero’s welcome in Paris at age 83. The excitement of the trip was too much for him and he died in Paris. Because of his criticism of the church, Voltaire was denied burial in church ground. He was finally buried at an abbey in Champagne. In 1791 his remains were moved to a resting place at the Pantheon in Paris.

HISTORyNow in our 36th season, the People’s Light & Theatre Company is a

non-profit, professional theatre founded in 1974 by Danny Fruchter, Meg Fruchter, Ken Marini, and Dick Keeler. These artists were committed to making theatre rooted in service to the community. Today, this founding principle remains central to our core mission: to make plays drawn from many sources to entertain, inspire and engage our community. We hope that these plays and programs bring people together and provide opportunities for reflection, discovery and celebration.

We extend our mission through a wide range of nationally recognized arts education programs for youth and adults that we call Arts Discovery. Arts Discovery serves 30,000 young people each year through in-school residencies, student matinees that bring students from 21 high schools to the theatre each year for free, special projects tailored to specific youth communities, and a year-

round Theatre School for both young people and adults. Our education programs and professional productions are closely tied to and informed by each other, resulting in a unified commitment to excellence throughout the organization.

People’s Light has always made its home in Chester County. In 1979 the Theatre moved to our current seven-acre site in Malvern, which includes two black box theatres with 375 and 180 seats, respectively. We produce seven to nine plays per season, mixing world premieres, contemporary plays, and fresh approaches to classic texts for our 6-Play Series and Target Family Discovery Series. We house guest artists in a restored 18th century farmhouse that includes a banquet room that can be rented for special events, as well as a bistro, Places! Total community served is nearly 85,000 annually. Our $5 million annual budget employs 70 full and permanent part-time artists and staff members and almost 200 additional guest artists.

The Theatre continues to be recognized nationally for commissioning new plays; of the 384 productions we have mounted over the course of our 36-year history, 150 were world/regional premieres, over one-third of our production output. Recent world premieres include Absence by Wendy Hammond; Richard Hellesen’s adaptation of The Emperor’s New Clothes; Y York’s adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s Eggs; Russell Davis’ The Day of the Picnic; the adaptation and translation of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author by company member Louis Lippa; Playwright Russell Davis’ adaptation of Crispin: The Cross of Lead by Avi; and Y York’s adaptation of Getting Near to Baby by Audrey Couloumbis, which was recently remounted at both Childsplay in Tempe, Arizona and the Seattle Children’s Theatre.

Notable past productions include the American professional premiere of Edward Kemp’s translation of Gotthold Lessing’s Nathan the Wise, Lou Lippa’s two-part, six-hour adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie, and Karen Sunde’s Achilles: A Kabuki Play (both world premieres). Our productions have toured as close to home as Philadelphia (Holes at the Kimmel Center in 2005, The Emperor’s New Clothes at Longwood Gardens) and as far away as Mexico, Budapest, and Cyprus.

People’s Light has been the recipient of major grants from many national and local foundations and corporations, including most recently the Engage 2020 Innovation Grant which is supported by the Wallace Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts and The Philadelphia Foundation, and is a program of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance’s research and marketing initiative Engage 2020; Independence Foundation New Theatre Works Initiative Grant, and The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program. Please see our complete list of generous supporters in this program. Nationally, People’s Light holds a reputation for excellence and innovation. In the five-county Philadelphia region, People’s Light is valued as a cultural center that responds to its community.

Arts Discovery SpotlightA Glimpse of How Your Support of People’s Light Makes a Difference.

Community Connections – Susan McKeySusan McKey is not only a leading lady onstage, but a passionate and vibrant

teaching artist in our community who has been working with People’s Light for over twenty years. Susan started her career as both teaching artist and actress by assisting Abigail Adams in producing educational programs and touring productions to area schools in the early 1990s. (Her first role was in the elementary school touring production of The Locked Kingdom.) Most recently, Susan taught our Theatre School class Acting and Improvisation Technique for Adults, and led a ten-day theatre residency for students in grades 2-6 with the General Wayne Elementary Part-time Learning Support Program from 2008-2010. Up next in her teaching artist work, Susan will be working with our BIG READ* Project, helping to bring Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to life by leading multiple workshops at local schools. Our Arts Discovery programs and teaching artists are supported in part through various grants and corporate funding, but we couldn’t do this work with out the consistent support of our audiences. On behalf of the many lives these artists have touched, thank you for supporting the ongoing work of people like Susan!

*BIG READ is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

In the 2010-11 Season, People’s Light is honored to be a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant. This program gives us the opportunity us to stage events, school residencies and book giveaways that encourage young people and adults in our area to read Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The Big Read will culminate in our spring 2011 production of Laura Eason’s adaptation of the novel as part of our Target Family Discovery Series. We thank the following donors who have contributed to the grant matching fund that is required for this exciting program. For more information about the Big Read events and supporting this effort, please click on Big Read on the Support page at peopleslight.org, or contact Jane Moss at [email protected] or 610-647-1900, ext.102.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
