SUBARU ENGINEERING IS NOT ABOUT C ARS. IT ’S ABOUT PEOPLE.
EVERY SUBARU IS DESIGNED AROUND THE SIMPLE IDEA THAT YOU
SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET WHERE YOU WANT TO GO QUICKLY,
COMFORTABLY AND SAFELY. REGARDLESS OF WEATHER AND ROAD
CONDITIONS. THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE SHOULD BE AS SATISFYING
AS IT IS STRESS-FREE. TO DO THIS REQUIRES EXCEPTIONAL CONTROL.
THAT ’S WHY EVERY SUBARU WE MAKE HAS AN ADVANCED FULL-
T IME, ALL-WHEEL DRIVING SYSTEM FOR MA XIMUM TRACT ION.
A VEHICLE IN CONTROL IS A SAFE VEHICLE, ONE THAT INSPIRES

WHAT “TRACTION CONTROL” WANTS TO BE
WHEN IT GROWS UP.

When accelerating, the vehi-
cle’s weight shifts rearward,
reducing traction to the front
wheels. In response, Subaru
AWD can smoothly direct
power to the rear wheels
where there is more traction.
When braking, the vehicle’s
weight shifts forward, reduc-
ing rear-wheel traction. Subaru
AWD can respond by sending
power to the front wheels for
better overall steering control
and braking performance.
“...RULE OF THUMB: ANYWHERE THAT MOISTURE AND ASPHALT MEET, THE
LEGACY LIKELY WILL PERFORM BETTER AND MORE PREDICTABLY THAN ITS
TWO-WHEEL DRIVE COMPETITION.”
AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE, BUYING AND LEASING 2001
The rear multi-link suspension is
designed for exceptional stabil-
ity – and to help keep handling
consistent whether the vehicle
is heavily loaded or not. Front
and rear stabilizer bars keep
body roll in check.
The 4-wheel, fully-independent
suspension has been designed
to be extremely strong, yet sup-
ple and responsive on the road.
In front, MacPherson struts use
L-shaped lower arms for added
rigidity and durability. Liquid-
filled suspension bushings
absorb unwanted vibration.
Four little patches of tire between
you and the road. Why not use them all?
Subaru All-Wheel Drive constantly
monitors and smoothly adjusts power
to provide the best traction in any
weather. For ultimate control, Subaru
AWD drives all four wheels all the time,
unlike some AWD systems that drive
only two wheels until they detect a
loss of traction and then respond or
must be engaged by the driver.
A perfect partner to AWD, all
Legacy models feature an advanced
4-channel/4-sensor anti-lock braking
system with 4-wheel disc brakes. And
to capitalize on the enhanced respon-
siveness of their sport-tuned suspension,
Legacy GT and GT Limited models feature
a standard viscous coupling limited-slip
rear differential that helps distribute
power between the rear wheels for
maximum traction and control.
Coming out of a corner, a
front-wheel drive car tends to
understeer, or plow toward the
outside of a curve when accel-
erating. With AWD, the Subaru
Legacy exits a curve with
the right amount of power to
the rear wheels.
Going into a corner, rear-wheel
drive cars tend to oversteer.
The rear wheels can break
loose, sending the car into a
spin. Subaru AWD tracks
smoothly through the curve,
entering with the right amount
of power to the front wheels.
When going downhill, the
vehicle’s weight shifts for-
ward, reducing rear-wheel
traction. Subaru AWD can
respond by sending power
to the front wheels for better
overall steering control and
braking performance.
When going uphill, the vehi-
cle’s weight shifts rearward,
reducing traction to the front
wheels. In response, Subaru
AWD can smoothly direct
power to the rear wheels
where there is more traction.
Subaru AWD has conquered the unique demands of rallying, where
a vehicle must be extremely responsive and maneuverable, yet
completely stable and predictable.

THE HEART OF EVERY SUBARU IS THE SYMMETRICAL AWD SYSTEM. THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, DRIVESHAFT AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL ARE LAID OUT IN A STRAIGHT
LINE. BY CLOSELY BALANCING THE BODY LEFT TO RIGHT AND KEEPING COMPONENTS CLOSE TO THE CHASSIS’ CENTERLINE, THE LEGACY IS EXCEPTIONALLY AGILE, YET
EXTREMELY STABLE. THE BOXER ENGINE’S COMPACT DIMENSIONS ALLOW IT TO BE PLACED FURTHER BACK IN THE CHASSIS, REDUCING WEIGHT AHEAD OF THE FRONT WHEELS
ALLOWING QUICKER REACTION TO STEERING INPUTS, AND ITS LOWER CENTER OF GRAVITY SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCES STABILITY IN TURNS AND EVASIVE MANEUVERS.
LEGACY REDEFINES THE TERM STREET SMARTS. MULTI-REFLECTOR HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS, DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS AND THE SPORTY INTEGRATED FRONT SPOILER ANNOUNCE YOUR PRES-
ENCE. STANDARD 15-INCH WHEELS FEATURE SUBSTANTIAL 205/60 SERIES ALL-SEASON TIRES. THE AVAILABLE ALUMINUM-ALLOY WHEELS SHOWN BELOW GIVE ADDED FLAIR. LARGE
WINDOWS GIVE EXCELLENT VISIBILITY ALL AROUND AND ARE TINTED TO REDUCE GLARE AND HELP KEEP THE CABIN COOL. WAGON MODELS FEATURE A FIXED INTERMITTENT REAR WIPER WITH
WASHER AS WELL AS ROOF RAILS. CONTRASTING BLACK MIRRORS, DOOR HANDLES AND BODY-SIDE MOLDINGS GIVE THE LEGACY L AN ESPECIALLY CONFIDENT, ROADWORTHY LOOK.

Intelligent Design. All
Legacy models enjoy sub-
floor storage for extra
space. Sedan models fea-
ture an internal child safety
trunk release with a self-illu-
minating handle on the
inside of the trunk.
We never learned to compromise.
So even though the Legacy L is an out-
standing road car, thanks to its supple
4-wheel independent suspension, the
exceptional control of full-time AWD and
stopping power of an advanced 4-channel/
4-sensor anti-lock braking system, it doesn’t
come at the expense of your comfort. Air
conditioning, power windows, door locks
and mirrors, tilt steering column, cruise
control and an AM/FM/cassette audio
system are all standard. Even an ambient
temperature gauge and digital dual-mode
trip odometer. The Wagon also features a
60/40 split fold-down rear seatback for
added utility.
Legacy is powered by a 2.5-liter, 16-
valve horizontally opposed "boxer"
engine producing 165 horsepower
and 166 lb.-ft. of torque for low-end
power. The engine’s lower center of
gravity design means reduced body
roll in turns for more secure handling.

Gliding through the snow. Cutting a
perfect turn. Reaching the top of the hill
feeling exhilarated.The Legacy GT could
make driving your favorite winter sport,
with its sport-tuned suspension for
responsive handling and a limited-slip
rear differential for maximum rear-wheel
traction. Perfecting your moves is easy
with a standard leather-wrapped steering
wheel and shifter handle, while the 6-
way power driver’s seat with manual
lumbar adjustment holds you in place.
Even a handy remote keyless entry system.
GT Sedan adds a rear seat fold-down
center armrest with trunk pass-through,
perfect for carrying oversize items.
Whatever those are for.
Dense pack. With up to 68.6 cubic feet
of available cargo space with the rear
seatback folded down, little gets left
behind. The rear gate opening is
extended into the rear bumper for
easier loading, and the cargo area
light makes finding things easy. The
standard retractable cargo area cover
keeps your valuables out of sight.
Grand Touring with the emphasis on grand, Legacy GT provides such luxuries
as dual power moonroofs on wagon models, and a single power moonroof
on all sedans. An illuminated ignition switch ring keeps nighttime fumbling to
a minimum, and woodgrain patterned interior trim gives a rich, upscale look.
LEGACY GT MAKES SURE YOU’RE PROPERLY OUTFITTED FOR A GREAT RIDE. STANDARD 4-BEAM MULTI-REFLECTOR HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS AND FOG LIGHTS ILLUMINATE YOUR WAY.
BODY COLOR MIRRORS, DOOR HANDLES AND BODY-SIDE MOLDINGS GIVE A SOPHISTICATED LOOK. THE BODY COLOR GROUND EFFECTS PERFECTLY COMPLEMENT THE 16-INCH ALU-
MINUM-ALLOY WHEELS AND HINT AT THE GT’S ENHANCED ABILITIES. THE AVAILABLE REAR SPOILER SHOWN BELOW ADDS A PERFECT FINISHING TOUCH AND HELPS KEEP THE REAR
WINDOW CLEAN. AND SO YOU CAN SHARE THE FUN, THE ACCESSORY SKI ATTACHMENT CARRIES UP TO SIX PAIRS OF SKIS AND FITS PERFECTLY WITH THE STANDARD ROOF RAILS.
SPORT BLENDS BEAUTIFULLY WITH SOPHISTICATION ON GT LIMITED. START WITH MULTI-REFLECTOR HALOGEN HEADLIGHTS AND FOG LIGHTS. ADD STYLISH 16-INCH

“Limited” certainly doesn’t describe the luxury found here. Remote key-
less entry spoils you with its convenience. The premium 6-speaker
AM/FM/Weatherband stereo with cassette includes a single-disc CD
player and is easily upgraded to a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. And most
comforting, front seat side-impact air bags are front-seatback mounted
to maintain optimal placement and are included as standard equipment.*
A WOLF IN LEATHER-TRIMMED UPHOLSTERY
Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s
a luxury car. Oh sure, there’s standard
leather-trimmed upholstery, a 6-way
power driver’s seat, dual-mode heated
front seats, front seat side-impact air
bags*, a power moonroof and AM/FM/
Weatherband audio system with cas-
sette and single-disc CD player. Very
convincing. But underneath is the
exceptional control and security of
the Subaru All-Wheel Driving System,
a responsive sport-tuned suspension, a
2.5-liter boxer engine that puts out
166 lb.-ft. of torque and a limited-slip
rear differential for added bite.
For added versatility, every Legacy
Sedan enjoys a comfortable rear seat
fold-down center armrest that features
a trunk pass-through that’s perfect for
carrying oversized items that may be
too long for the trunk.
“…VOLUMINUS CARGO CAPACITY, PLENTY-O’-PEOPLE CAPACITY AND ALL-WEATHER
ALL-WHEEL-ABILITY. ADD TO THAT THE SUBIE’S DECIDEDLY UNTRUCKY RIDE,
AND THE RESULT IS WHAT MANY CALL THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS.”

A HAPPY MEETING OF COMFORT, SPORT AND LUXURY. SMART INTERIOR DESIGN MEANS THAT INSTRUMENTS CAN BE CLEARLY READ AT A GLANCE, AND THAT ALL CONTROLS ARE EASILY
ADJUSTED. HEIGHT-ADJUSTABLE FRONT SEAT HEAD RESTRAINTS AND SHOULDER-BELT ANCHORS MAKE SURE YOU’RE COMFORTABLE AND PROPERLY SECURED. THE AVAILABLE 4-SPEED
AUTOMATIC EMPLOYS A GATED SHIFTER DESIGN THAT MAKES IT EASY TO SELECT THE RIGHT GEAR. WITH STANDARD LEGACY FEATURES INCLUDING AIR CONDITIONING, POWER WINDOWS,
MIRRORS AND DOOR LOCKS, YOU MIGHT FIND IT HARD TO LEAVE. WITH THE STANDARD LEATHER-TRIMMED UPHOLSTERY ON GT LIMITED, IT JUST MIGHT BE IMPOSSIBLE.
All Legacy models feature a standard
smooth-shifting 5-speed manual or
an available 4-speed automatic trans-
mission. For an added touch of luxury,
GT models feature a leather-wrapped
shift handle and woodgrain-patterned
interior trim.
Legacy GT and GT Limited models feature a manually adjusted lumbar support
to fight fatigue on long drives. Front seat comfort is enhanced on GT models
with a standard 6-way power driver’s seat, and GT Limited goes one step further
with dual-mode heated front seats for driver and passenger.

Many of our competitors are now scrambling to offer at least one model with all-wheel drive.
We think that’s a great start. Now, if they’d add a boxer engine and a symmetrical AWD
design that keeps the center of gravity lower to the ground for responsive, confident han-
dling even in the most severe conditions–like every Subaru–they’d really have something.
Every Subaru is designed to avoid
trouble by giving you exceptional con-
trol in even the worst conditions. Active
Safety means going where you want
to go and avoiding where you don’t.
The same features that make the Legacy
so enjoyable to drive also make it
extremely safe. Standard full-time AWD,
responsive handling and 4-channel/
4-sensor anti-lock brakes help you
maintain control. And that added
control translates into a true feeling
of confidence when you’re behind the
wheel. When trouble is unavoidable,
an advanced Passive Safety system is
there to help protect you.

of safety. That’s why every wagon we sell

EVERYONE DESERVES SAFETY. THAT’S WHY ALL SEATING POSITIONS FEATURE THREE-POINT SEATBELTS. IN CERTAIN TYPES OF COLLISIONS, PRE-TENSIONERS “CINCH”
UP THE FRONT SEATBELTS TO HELP HOLD OCCUPANTS IN PLACE, THEN FORCE LIMITERS GRADUALLY RELEASE BELT TENSION TO REDUCE THE MAXIMUM FORCE ON
THE TORSO. REAR CHILD SEAT ANCHORS ARE MOUNTED TO THE FLOOR OF THE VEHICLE, MEETING A NEW INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR THE INSTALLATION OF SPE-
CIALLY EQUIPPED CHILD SAFETY SEATS. THERE’S EVEN AN INTERNAL CHILD SAFETY TRUNK RELEASE WITH A SELF-ILLUMINATING HANDLE ON ALL SEDAN MODELS.
Second generation front
air bags help protect
occupants during decel-
eration in a collision.**
Designed for comfort as well as
safety, all five seating positions
feature three-point seatbelts.
Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames in the front, center and rear of the Legacy disperse impact energy
around the passenger compartment, offering added protection for occupants. The center ring connects
the center pillar with the lateral roof and floor supports for increased side-impact protection.
In slick conditions, cars can
easily overpower their driven
wheels, especially in turns.
Rear-wheel drive vehicles
want to spin. Front wheel
drive vehicles want to continue
straight ahead. All-Wheel
Drive allows you to track
confidently through the turn.
