Legal Aid & Services Clinic- Lloyd Law College About The importance of Legal Aid and Awareness Campaigns as a mechanism for social progress is something that has been repeatedly stressed upon by the Government of India. In the backdrop of Poverty and Inequality, legal Aid is an effective way towards attainment of the ideals of ‘Social, Economic and Political’ Justice that are enshrined in the preamble of our constitution and under the Directive Principles of State Policy. Imparting legal awareness is the first step towards ensuring prompt and effective access to justice. Keeping this in mind, the Bar Council of India mandated all law colleges and universities in India to establish and run legal aid centers or clinics. The idea was to fulfil certain standards of legal education, but more importantly, it was also aimed at engaging the students in serving their community by promoting legal awareness through these legal aid clinics and programmes. The entire purpose of setting nationwide collegiate clinics is to acclimatize several thousand law students of the nation to the problems faced by the masses ignorant about their rights and remedies under the law. The aim is indeed a noble one but there difficulties which still need to be addressed. The Lloyd Law College Legal Aid Clinic is one successful beacon while there many more colleges and universities where such beacons need to be lighted, many thousands whose legal dilemmas need to be efficiently addressed. The Lloyd Law College Legal Aid & Services Clinic is the body which inducts students to use their knowledge of law to provide free legal aid to those who are most in need of it through various media. The Legal Aid functions that it performs are preventive, remedial, activist and reformative. Our aim is to spread legal awareness among students and people at large. we endeavours to achieve the target by organising legal literacy camps, Seminars, Legal Counselling, public Speaking, Poster Making, Street Plays, liasoning with Legal Services Authorities and thorough various other communicable mediums.

The importance of Legal Aid and Awareness Campaigns as a mechanism for social

EVENTS

1. Awareness Workshops/ Camps

a. “An Initiative to Raise Awareness about Transgender Rights”

The rule of law is supreme and everyone is equal in the eyes of law in India. Yet, the transgender

community is in a constant battle as they have to fight oppression, abuse and discrimination from

every part of the society, whether it’s their own family and friends or society at large. It’s high

time to recognize and honor their rights.

In this context the Legal Aid & Services Clinic- Lloyd law College, greater Noida in

collaboration with District legal Services Authority has organised an event to raise awareness

about Transgender Rights on 16th September, 2017. A street play was organized by the students

members of legal Aid & Services Clinic. The following esteemed guests were present to grace

the occasion.

b. “Awareness Drive on Anti Ragging in the College Campus”

Ragging is a complex issue that cannot be tackled just by punitive measures or by passing a law.

We need more than laws to eradicate the menace that ragging has become. With the objectives to

make old students realize the demerits of ragging and informing the new students about their

rights against ragging, our students have organized a Street Play on Anti Ragging on 22 August

2017. Students Members of Legal Aid & Services Clinic have participated with lots of zeal &

enthusiasm. More than 100 Students were present and get benefitted.

c. “Street Play on the Importance of freedom on the Occasion of Independence Day”

Students Members of Legal Aid & Services Clinic have organized a Street Play on the

Importance of freedom on the Occasion of Independence Day. A large gathering of students and

teachers were present at the venue.

d. Benefits of Yoga: An Alternative to Medicine

Regular Yoga Sessions are organized by the Legal Aid & Services Clinic, Lloyd Law College in

the campus. A group of 20 teachers and 10 students participated in this event regularly.

e. “Celebration of International Women’s Day”

Legal Aid & Services Clinic have celebrated International Women’s Day. Students were told

how International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the

turn of 12th century in North America and across Europe. But the day has assumed a global

dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. Various competitions were

organized to mark the occasion including, Essay Writing, Slogan Writing and Poster making.

2. Visits

a. Jail Visit:

On 12th october 2017, Students Members of Legal Aid & Services Clinic are taken to

District Jail, Gautam Budh Nagar to study prison conditions and to interact with the

prisoners. They spoke on the rights of the prisoners, health and hygiene in prison, wages

and living conditions, Human Rights, reformative and rehabilitative measures. They was

a session organized on Plea Bargaining for the under trial prisoners.

b. Lok Adalat Visit

Students of B.A.LL.B Final year and LL.B Final year participated the National Lok

Adalat proceedings conducted by District Legal Service Authority, Gautam Budhha

Nagar on 17th September 2017. A total of 18,123 cases were disposed off. A special

session regarding the process of putting the matters before Lok Adalat was taken by the

Ms. Neelu Mainwal, Secretary, DALSA.

3. Seminars/ Lectures/ Talk

a. Orientation programme on working of the Legal Aid & Services Clinic

Legal Aid & Services Clinic, Lloyd Law College organized an orientation programme which

mainly focused on 1st year students to give them a vivid knowledge on working of the society

and its literary activities held in 2016-17. The major objective of the programme was to make the

students aware of the activities of the society, its working and constitution. The programme was

attended by more than 200 students of the College.

b. National Seminar on ‘Law School Based Legal Services Clinics’ by National Legal

Services Authority (NALSA)

Ten Students of Legal Aid & Services Clinic, Lloyd Law College and two faculty members have

attended national seminar of ‘Law School Based Legal Services Clinics’ on July 30, 2017 in

New Delhi. The seminar, organised by National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), was held

with the theme ‘Role of legal services clinics in law schools in promoting access to justice’ at

Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, New Delhi.

Special address was delivered by Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India and

Executive Chairman NALSA. Inaugural address was given by Justice J.S. Kehar, Chief Justice

of India and Patron-in-Chief NALSA, while Functionality of Legal Aid Clinics was addressed by

Professor Ranbir Singh, Vice-Chancellor, National Law University Delhi.

c. Awareness Drive on “Law Relating to FIR : Drafting & Procedure”

The major objective of the orientation was to make students aware of the Law Relating to FIR:

Drafting & Procedure, its functioning and its role. The programme was attended by more than

200 students and teacher members of the Legal Aid Society. The guests of honour were to

enlighten on the activities were

d. A Camp on Legal literacy and awareness regarding FIR, Arrest & Bail

Legal Aid & Services Clinic- Lloyd Law College in association with District legal Services

Authority have organized a camp on raising awareness regarding FIR, Arrest & Bail on 16th

September 2017 . A total of 100 students from different semesters have participated in this camp.

Ms. Neelu Mainwal, Secretary DALSA was herself present at the camp. Mr. Ankit kumar & Mr.

Anil Thakur were the resource persons.

e. Games Seminar Championship organized by Thai Boxing Indian Federation on 29th

October 2017.

A Student group of Legal Aid & Services Clinic- Lloyd Law College participated in Games

Seminar Championship organized by Thai Boxing Indian Federation on 29th October 2017.

Legal Aid & Services Clinic- Lloyd Law College was specially invited for the purpose of raising

awareness regarding The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.

The students through street play and speech raised awareness. The students were highly

appreciated by the association.

f. Poster- Making Competition on “Violence against Women”

This competition was held on 17th November 2017. In total 55 students participated in the

competition, out of which 3 students were chosen as winners by our faculty members.

g. Closing Ceremony of “Legal Services Week”

This year our college was given the privilege to organise the Closing Ceremony of the “Legal

Services Week” in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority, GautamBudh Nagar.

During the ceremony, various institutions were invited to visit our college and present their

report of their activities throughout the Legal Services Week. Many Para- Legal Volunteers

and District Judge attended this Closing Ceremony which was organised on 18th November

2017.

h. Nukkad Natak and Presentation on POCSO

On 18th November 2017, a team of 10 members of the Legal Aid Cell visited H.D. Sehrawat

Public School, Chanchal Park, New Delhi, on the occasion of 2nd Elbow Boxing

Championship 2017 and organised a workshop where they performed a NukkadNatak and

presented a presentation on POCSO Act. Each member of the team was presented with a

certificate as a token of appreciation by the federation.

i. Nukkad Natak and Presentation on “Violence Against Women”

On 19th November 2017, another team of 6 members of the Legal Aid Cell visited H.D.

Sehrawat Public School, Chanchal Park, New Delhi, on the occasion of 2nd Elbow Boxing

Championship 2017 and organised a workshop where they performed a Nukkad Natak and

presented a presentation on a very sensitive issue our Nation has been facing since the

ancient times, i.e., “Violence Against Women”. This workshop was appreciated by the

Federation head Mr.Kuldee pthat he presented the team with a Momento, an appreciation

letter for our College and certificates for each member.

j. Law Day - Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Andolan - 26 November 2017

BA.LL.B.– Sem. I team of 12 student volunteers of LASEC were invited by Dr. Satyajit Kumar,

SPO, PC-PNDT Act, IVF and Surrogacy, Directorate of Family Welfare, Vikas Bhawan II” to

conduct a street play on “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao“, It was held at Dilli-Haat Janakpuri, Delhi

Tourism on 26 November 2017 on a very special occasion [Law day of India]. The objective of

the program was to sensitize and aware common People about the importance of human right to

life and dignity of girl children. The audience consisted of children, kids, doctors, advocates, etc.

The play was revolving around the story of a girl child, how much she struggles for her rights

before and after her birth. What kind of atrocities girls in our patriarchal structure of society goes

through her entire life. The play went around the topics: Sex determination, Right to education,

Child marriage and Domestic violence. At the end they recited a poem as part of play and give a

slogan SAVE GIRL CHILD ...Jai Hind

K. Release of the prisoners from Gautam Budh Nagar District Jail

By a prolonged efforts of Legal Aid & Services Clinic- Lloyd Law College, Greater Noida, it

finally became possible on 25th December 2017 to get released five of the prisoners, imprisoned

in Gautam Budh Nagar District Jail. These prisoners were kept in jail because of lack of legal

aid, shortage of complying the procedural requirements regarding documentation and failure to

pay the fines imposed on them. The following prisoners were released

a. Vimlesh alias Chhoti Billi, S/O- Parsidh Khan- imprisoned under section 379 of IPC

from 19-12-2014.

b. Chhotu, S/O- Jhilidas, imprisoned under Sections 4 & 25 of Arms Act from 03-07-2017.

c. Shahidul, S/O- Unknown imprisoned under sections 380, 511 IPC from 07-06-2016.

d. Dharmraj alias Bhuria S/O- Gariba imprisioned under sections 304 (1), 316 and 506 of

IPC from 31-08-2012.

e. Sonu S/O- Lekhraj imprisoned under section 379 and 511 of IPC from 15-03-2017.

The released prisoners promised not to repeat the same and will now take care of their families.

Jail Superintendent Mr. Vipin Mishra and jailor Mr.Satyaprakash have rendered a great support

in this noble endeavour. Mr. Piyush Sharma, faculty Coordinator of Legal Aid Clinic and student

members have arranged all the means to make it possible. Mr. Akhilesh kumar khan, Deputy

Director of Lloyd Law College was also present. He informed that in pursuance of the Legal

Services Authority Act, 1987 and the guidelines of the Bar Council of India, legal aid & services

clinic is established in the college. The clinic is committed towards providing free legal aid to

poors and marginalised sections of the society. The clinic has been immensely contributing

towards its goal by organising various legal aid camps and other activities in and around Gautam

Budh Nagar. He promised for similar efforts in future.
