Program notes for the Oct 13th, 3p.m. performance of Christian Howes Southern Exposureat the Allen Theatre in Annville, PA....

Christian Howes wants you to know that Southern Exposure is not some light-hearted evocation of Parisian café music."It's deeper than that," Howes, the 41-year-old violinist, who is also an educator and online entrepreneur, says of his 13thalbum. Not that there's anything wrong with what Howes identifies as salon fare, but it wouldn't reflect the hearty -sometimes fierce - bite with which he and his ensemble here tear into original material and classics from an extendedHispanic sphere of influence. The compositions and improvisations throughout Southern Exposure derive from, areinfluenced by and/or refer to a swath of the world that comprises not just Spain and Portugal, but Mediterranean France andItaly, North Africa, the Caribbean islands, Central and South America, as well as penetration into more northern climes.Argentine tango nuevo a la Astor Piazzolla, Brazilian bossas and choros, Afro-Cuban jazz, driving post-bop and fusion rearup in the 11 pieces on this album. So do Celtic and Appalachian fiddle figures, romantic serenades and contemporaryclassical rigor.

Howes began as a classical student at age five and in his late teens he discovered jazz, pursuing whatever lessons in it hecould find, whether in school, from street musicians, gospel church services or players he met at jam sessions around hishometown of Columbus, Ohio. Moving to New York City after graduating from Ohio State University with a degree inphilosophy, Howes found his way into a circle of improvising modernists. "Many years in New York City inspired me to wantto develop a more forward-looking voice," Howes recalls. "I try to play in a way that's pushing forward while still drawing onvarious traditions.”

Howes' determination to be both far-reaching and centrally grounded may be the defining characteristic of all his projects. Itsurely fits this one. "The bright opening song, 'Tá Boa, Santa? (Are You Ok, My Dear?)' is a case in point of a complex, exciting piece with aspects of both traditional form and regenerative open-mindedness.”The song structure of "Aparecida," based on a samba rhythm, is less complicated, but the musicians' interactions are just assensitive to the task of weaving their personal strands into a compelling whole. The title is the name of a city in Sao Paolo, where the Basilica of our Lady of Aparecida stands, a shrine to Brazil's revered statue of the Virgin Mary."Oblivion" is one of the most famous compositions of Astor Piazzolla, the Argentine bandoneon hero. It climaxes with astunning cadenza by Howes, but the entire ensemble stars in the performance, each quintet contributing touches thatadvance the drama of the piece. Similarly, "Cubano Chant" conjures the spirit of present-day salsa. "Cancion de Amor" is atestament to the Brazilian concept of saudadé, a nostalgic sadness, or warm satisfaction remembering love lost. "Choro dasAguas," composed by Ivan Lins and Victor Martins, is transformed into a lilting yet still minor-esque waltz; it ends with sweettrembling, an affect few serious musicians can pull off so credibly. Howes' "Gracias," returns him to his roots. It conjures anair of timelessness, though tempo is not suspended so much as diffused. It is as if the sun's light, suddenly flooding in froma window facing the sea, temporarily bleaches the outlines of a room's furnishings, but as our eyes focus, we see where weare: At home, with a grip firm on the verities of jazz, blues and swing, but our senses refreshed by the shift of visual register.

You can expect to hear many of these pieces from the Resonance Records release, Southern Exposure, as well as othersurprises. We hope you enjoy the concert!

CHRISTIAN HOWES

Jazz violinist Christian Howes grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied classically from the age offive, performing as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at age 16 and later receiving hisbachelor's degree in Philosophy from Ohio State University. At age twenty, a “cultural intervention”

occurred when Christian had the opportunity to perform at regular gospel church services and it becamehis mission to become a violinist with a strong voice in jazz. Since his shift, he has gained great notorietyfrom critics and players alike as one of the world's most respected jazz violinists. Christian was a favoriteof the late guitar legend Les Paul, with whom he worked for 11 years. An in-demand violinist on the NewYork scene, He collaborates with a bevy of top shelf jazz artists, including Greg Osby, Frank Vignola,Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and a 4-year chair in Bill Evans' “Soulgrass” band. In 2013,he was voted among the top three violinists in JazzTimes' 2012 Expanded Critics Poll. In August 2011,Christian was ranked as the #1 “Rising Star” violinist in the Downbeat Critics Poll and was a nominee forthe Jazz Journalists Association's “Violinist Of The Year” in 2011. In 2012, he received the ResidencyPartnership from Chamber Music America for his work in outreach with orchestral education programs. He regularly tours throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. as a leader of his own groups and a soloist withorchestras. Says All About Jazz, ”as a jazz violinist he has no peer.” The Minneapolis Tribune calledChristian “ arguably the most intriguing young violinist in jazz.”

FREDDY COLE QUARTETOn at 3:00PM in The Ware Center, Lancaster, CPFJ is proud to welcomeSunday, November 10The Freddy Cole Quartet, featuring Freddy Cole piano/vocals, Elias Bailey - bass, Curtis Boyd -

drums, Randy Napoleon guitar. Living jazz legend Lionel Frederick Cole was born in 1931, the

youngest of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole’s five children. His three elder brothers - Eddie, Ike

and Nat (twelve years Freddy’s senior) - were all musicians. Freddy began playing and singing

in Chicago clubs as a teenager. Although he was ready to hit the road at 18, his mother

intervened and he continued his musical education at the Roosevelt Institute in Chicago.

Freddy moved to New York in 1951, where he studied at Julliard and found himself profoundly

influenced by John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. It was back in New York that

Freddy successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues to flourish to this day. He

developed a vast repertoire of songs in Manhattan bistros and concurrently began to

supplement his live performances with television and radio commercial jingle work. Freddy

recorded several albums for European and English companies during the 1970s that helped

him develop a loyal overseas following. He developed a stand-up act, a better rapport with

audiences, and learned to sing in other languages. He plays piano and sings and performs live

with guitar, drums and upright bass. He has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his

elder brother, Nat King Cole. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie

Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals – suave, elegant,

formidable, and articulate – are among the most respected in jazz. Cole’s career continues to

ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a style and

musical sophistication all his own..
