Health Care For All's 2013 organizing efforts kicked off on January 12th, when we hosted our third leadership summit with keynote speaker Andrew Dreyfus, President & CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.   Over 125 donors, volunteers, staff, and special guests gathered to focus on educating consumers about high out-of-pocket costs and the steps necessary to make change.

The summit was a huge success thanks to HCFA’s volunteer leadership team and generous financial support from individual donors.  We count on our supporters to continue to invest in our grassroots efforts by making a donation, sharing personal health care stories, and engaging their communities.

Healthy communities are happy communities and our statewide outreach efforts continue to build stronger partnerships throughout the Commonwealth.  HCFA, with the Massachusetts Health Connector and 10 local community organizations, launched a public outreach campaign to connect small businesses, individuals, and families in Spanish and Portuguese-speaking communities to affordable, high-quality health insurance options.  Many small businesses are not utilizing opportunities to access subsidized health care for their employees. This six-week initiative will help connect small business employees to the coverage they are eligible for and need. Call 1-800-272-4232 to learn more about HCFA's Small Business Outreach Program.

HCFA Volunteer-Turned-Advocate

Last fall, over 50 former staff and interns attended our inaugural Alumni Event, reconnected with old friends, and had an opportunity to meet current HCFA staff members. Executive directors Sue Sherry, Rob Restuccia,  John McDonough, and Amy Whitcomb Slemmer shared their experiences and comical memories of their Health Care For All tenure. The event was an opportunity to update our graduates about the organization’s current work and invite everyone to get involved.  Whether it’s hosting an event, growing HCFA’s informal network to recruit strong candidates, or becoming donors, HCFA Alumni have a critical role in our future success. Graduation from Health Care For All is not the end of an alum’s HCFA journey.  To stay current and get involved:

HCFA’s Alumni Network

My name is Charlene Palmer.  I am a wife and a mother of three children, ages 7, 9, and 11 and I volunteer at Health Care For All (HCFA) because having access to quality health care and medical services is very important to me and my family.  My oldest child has autism and his younger brother has asthma.  Their out-of-pocket costs for monthly prescriptions and weekly therapy sessions are a financial strain on our family. My husband and I are grateful to have employer-sponsored health insurance to address their medical needs but we’ve heard the horror stories of families and individuals who are unable to get health insurance due to pre-existing conditions.  Every year, our health insurance premiums demand a larger and larger share of our household budget and we worry that, one day, we may not be able to afford our health care. HCFA understands the predicament families like mine face and they are working hard for real and lasting change. From HelpLine assistance to legislative advocacy, HCFA is on the side of the health care consumer.  HCFA is on my side. I’m a proud member of HCFA and I do my part to help others navigate the health care system and get the coverage and support they need.  But in order to fight for us and all families, HCFA needs your support to sustain its efforts. Please join us by making a donation and getting involved.

HCFA’S ANNUAL FUND Your donation to Health Care For All's Annual Fund provides much needed general operating support to sustain our efforts. The gains made in Massachusetts last year were made possible by our partners, friends, and our donors. From our payment and delivery system reform victories to progress in MassHealth oral health coverage restoration, our annual fund provided the financial support to make these ambitious goals a reality. This year, we are calling on our donors to remember our efforts and make a contribution to HCFA’s annual fund so that we can work to ensure that the care we receive in Massachusetts is of the highest quality at the lowest cost feasible. It's simple. Without continued, incremental donations from individuals, HCFA will not have the muscle it needs to fight for residents of the Commonwealth.  We are halfway to our $100,000 goal. As the end of our fiscal year quickly approaches, we need your help! Please consider a gift to continue to support our work and help us remain a national model for direct service and health care advocacy.
