MODEL BUILDING/CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING & PLAY -- ORGANIZED BY THE STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION LEARNING CENTER -- When: Wednesday, MARCH 2, 2011 Time: 12:15 – 16:00 Where: Arts Center at ACS Lobby and Atrium Age group: Ages 5 – 14 FOSTERING THE JOY OF CREATIVE PLAY, PROMOTING: Motor skill development Social skills development Counting/Scale Group dynamics Patience Following directions Self evaluation Creativity A sense of accomplishment FREE PLAY Special LEGO tables will be set up for children to actively use their imagination to create constructions of their choice with the LEGO bricks provided. MODEL BUILDING This activity will involve the older children in completing the building of an 8-foot LEGO model, using equal-sized LEGO bricks, under the supervision and guidance of specialized personnel who will explain the construction process to them in order to achieve the desired results. Children will be separated into groups/teams (based on age) who will take turns, on a rotation basis and for an equal amount of time, working on the model. Each team will be responsible for completing a specific part of the model. In between turns, children can spend their time exercising their creativity at one of the many free- play tables (work stations) that will be set up. Upon completion of the construction, and after having admired their masterpiece, children will assist in taking the model apart, piece by piece, and putting the bricks back into boxes.

All children will be given a LEGO Award for having participated in this event. “We aim to inspire children and young people to develop into responsible members of society through fun, learning and high-quality creative play activities” Please RSVP ** with Melina Vassiliadis at the SNFLC office, [email protected], or 210 6393200 ext. 265, by Wednesday, February 9, 2011. *March 2, 2011 is a half-day for students. Parents whose children participate in this program must commit to picking up their children at 16:00 from the Art Center Lobby/Atrium. Snacks and hot chocolate will be provided.
