Don’t Melt the Ice!Grades K - 4, though some modification may be needed to record results for grades K - 2

You will need:● Insulators (suggestions include Styrofoam packaging, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, felt or

other fabric, craft foam, pom pom balls or cotton balls, small towels, etc.)● Ice● Plastic food containers, such as Tupperware

The task:● Using prediction, observation, and scientific thinking, students will line food containers with various

materials. Set containers away from sunlight or heat source. (Hint: keep one container free from insulation as a control.)

● Check on the cubes every 10 minutes and record how much has melted (you can measure the length of the ice cube)

● Record your results - which liner kept the ice from melting the best? What do you think that means?○ You can download and print a recording sheet here

Earth Day Upcycle Challenge! Can be modified for any age!

You will need:

● Any of the following: boxes, string, jars, cups, paper, string, egg cartons, paper towel/toilet paper rolls, bottle caps, pipe cleaners, old shirts, straws - pretty much anything from your recycling bin or anything you are ready to get rid of.

The task:● Upcycling is the process of taking something you would normally throw out and turning it into

something usable, usually even more valuable than it was!● Use recyclables and “trash” around the house to create something useful! For example, in class

some students have created hats, scarves, backpacks, board games, book covers, treasure boxes, and other fun items. Be creative!

Old books can become decorative centerpieces!
