LCCC Softball Team Celebrates Record-Setting Season The softball team’s season officially ended May 18, but the LCCC Cougars have a lot to be proud of. This season’s team

is LCCC’s first to become District F and Region XIX Champions. The team advanced to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in Rochester, Minn., and ended the double-elimination tournament in sixth place in the nation. The Cougars finished their season as the most successful softball team in LCCC’s history, with a 25-10 overall record.

Several players received additional accolades, as well. Lydia Danner was named Region XIX Player of the Year and Region XIX Tournament MVP, as well as to the First Team All-Region. Mackenzie Guzy was also named First Team All-Region, along with Bailey Pedersen and Shannon Gallagher. Emily Batman and Madison Mohr were named to the Second Team, and Pedersen was named the Region XIX Pitcher of the Year. Head Coach Eric Kutteroff was also named Coach of the Year in the region.

The college held a congratulatory event for

the team when they returned from the championship May 22 in Berrier Hall. There were refreshments and T-shirt giveaways, and the community had the chance to acknowledge the team’s accomplishments.

Students Receive Rotary Club Scholarships Two LCCC students were recently honored by the Allentown

West Rotary Club at a scholarship breakfast held at LCCC’s main campus. Aldaine Alphonse of Whitehall and Alyssa Smith of Lehighton each received $1,000. The scholarship selection was based on each student’s record of service and leadership and academic performance. The scholarship breakfast, which was directed by Rotarian Dr. Barbara Kistler, professor emeritus at LCCC, was attended by LCCC’s Dr. Thomas Meyer, vice president for Academic Services and Student Development, who opened with the welcome; Virginia Mihalik, transfer counselor; and Gene Eden, director of Student Life.

Aldaine Alphonse, who came to the U.S. in 2016 from Haiti, pursued an associate degree in business and will be attending Bucknell University in the fall majoring in business. She found

academic life challenging at first, particularly due to language barriers, but she overcame those challenges by using LCCC resources like the tutoring center. In addition to memberships in LCCC’s Student Government Association, Business Club, Psychology Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, where Alphonse served as treasurer, she helped develop a payment plan for low-income students wanting to be part of PTK. Alphonse is a Home Fire Volunteer with the American Red Cross, where she installs fire alarms and teaches fire safety procedures.

Alyssa Smith graduated with an associate degree in criminal justice and will continue her education at Cedar Crest College majoring in criminal justice. Smith, an officer of LCCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, organized a group to run in a 5K supporting the Truth for Women home for victims of sexual violence. She worked for the Assistant District Attorney’s office in Carbon County helping clients and navigating the legal system before trials, and she volunteered her time giving prospective student tours at LCCC.

Collegiate Award of Distinction Presented to Senator Browne LCCC’s Student Government Association President Alex Heffelfinger presented Senator Pat Browne with the

Collegiate Award of Distinction at the Student Awards Banquet on May 6.The LCCC Collegiate Award of Distinction is presented annually by the college’s Board of Trustees to recognize

a person or organization for unique contributions to the community, service and dedication in support of education, and to honor those who have demonstrated their commitment to the college and its students.

As a senator and state representative, Browne has introduced numerous bills that have been signed into law that positively impact working families, young children, property owners and small business owners. In 2009, he crafted the one-of-a-kind, 130-acre Neighborhood Improvement Zone to help revitalize and expand the tax base of the then financially-struggling city of Allentown.
