DearfriendsofLeica,

Unlikeanyothercamera,theLeicaMembodiesauniquelyindividualapproachtophotography.Itisandalwayshasbeenanexquisiteinstrumentforenablingauniquevisualexperience,aninstrumentthatgivesphotographersfreedomtocreate,whilealsomaximizingtheiroptionsforrealizingtheirownvisionoftheperfectpicture.TheLeicaMistheidealcameraforcapturingphotographsthathavethecapacitytocapturetheinconspicuous,unnoticedaspectsoflife.

SincetheintroductionoftheLeicaMrangefinderprinciplein1954,photojournalistsandphotographicartistshaveinfluencedourimageoftheworldwiththeirdiscreet,fastLeicaMcameras.Rangefindercamerasareidealfortakingvibrant,authenticimagesofeventsastheyhappen,andtheseadvantageshavebeenexploitedbythemanyphotographersoftheworld’sfirstindependentphotoagency,Magnum,foundedin1947bylegendaryphotographerHenriCartier-Bressonandothers.Thenasnow,membersofMagnumbelievedthatphotographersmusthaveaperspectiveintheirimagerythattranscendsasimple,clichédrecordingofreality.

SoweareparticularlydelightedthattherelationshipbetweenMagnumPhotosInternationalInc.andLeicaCameraistodaystrongerthanever.Buildingonoursharedhistory,MagnumandLeicaarecollaboratingtoproduceaseriesofprojectsthatcontinueourlong-standingdedicationtoindependentdocumentaryphotography.Todaywe’reverypleasedtopresentoneofthefirstresultsofthiscollaboration,onthesepages.

MagnumphotographerAlexMajolitraveledwiththenewestmemberoftheLeicaMcamerafamilytoVenice.There,hecapturedforusaremarkableportraitofayounggondolierandhiscity.Hisphotographstransformmomentsoftimeintolivinghistory.Vibrant,authenticimagesoflifeasithappens,capturedwiththenewLeicaM9-P.

4 SILENCEANDDISCRETION

DiscretionandunobtrusivenessareparticularstrengthsoftheM-System.Inoperation,theshutteroftheM9andtheM9-Pisasquietasawhisper.Anextremelylownoiselevelwhencockingtheshutterisensuredbyasophisticatedmotorandgearingsystem.Indiscreetmode,theshutterisonlycockedafterthephotographer’sfingerisliftedfromtheshutterreleasebut-tonwhen,forinstance,thecameraisconcealedunderajacket.Whenshootinghandheldatlongexposuretimes,orwheneverextremesteadinessisessential,slightpressureontheshut-terreleasebuttonin“softrelease”modeissufficienttotriggerthecamera.Inadditiontotheseadvantages,thefactthatthecombinationofcameraandlensissignificantlymorecompactthananyotherfull-framecamerasystemcontributestothefactthatM-Photographersarefrequentlyunnoticedandoftensimplyblendintothebackground.

5 SPEEDANDFLEXIBILITY

TheLeicaM9andM9-Padapttotheirintendedusesinaseamlesslyflexiblemanner.TheirsensitivityrangesfromISO80forwide-openaperturesonbrightdaystoISO2500forlow-lightimagecapture.Verylownoiselevelsandfinelydetailedimagesareachievedthroughoutthesensitivityrange,evenatthehighestISOsettings.Verylowimagenoisecharacteristics,anextremelybrightviewfinder/rangefinder,low-vibrationshutterandtheavailabilityofsuper-fastlensesmaketheM9andtheM9-Pperfectcamerasforavailable-lightphotography.

TheLeicaM9andM9-Paidphotographerswithautomaticfunctionswheneverthey’rerequired,butneverdictatehowtoshootorinterferewiththepicture-takingprocess.Dependingonthelightlevel,theautomaticISOshiftfunctionincreasesthesensitivityofthecameraassoonastheshutterspeedfallsbelowahand-holdablevalue.Atthesametime,italsolimitstheshifttoamaximumvaluedeterminedbythephotographer.Thismeansthatcorrectexposurewithoutcamerashakeandthelowestpossiblesensitivityisalwaysavailabletoguaranteethebestpossibleimagequalityinallsituations.Inaddition,theM9andM9-Palsoofferautomaticexposurebracketingwithauser-selectablenumberofshotsandexposureincrements.Thisfunctionensuresthatevenhigh-contrastsubjectsareperfectlycaptured.
