Textured SurfaceAll clamping surfaces have a machined, non-marring tex-

tured finish. Just clamp your workpiece against this surface

to secure it in position, and rout with confidence!

Dovetail Jig Features and Benefits

Side Stop FrontPerfect joint alignment is guaranteed with precisely

machined in side stops. Accurate wood placement is auto-

matic. Place the workpiece against the side stop, raise the

workpiece up to the finger assembly and press the cam-

action clamp. You are ready to rout.

Side Stop TopLike the front side stops, the top side stops are accurately

machined in the one piece extruded aluminum body. Each

top side stop has an undercut that allows cutting of rabbeted

drawer fronts without the need to offset the tail board.

Cam ClampsThe Leigh D4R and D1600 Jigs come with Cam-Action

Speed-Clamps made from high tech glass-filled nylon, for

years of trouble free service. These rugged easily adjustable

clamps provide amazing holding power. Unlike blister

producing torque knobs, thumb pressure is all you need.

Cross Cut FenceThe ability to rout sliding dovetails is a standard feature

on all Leigh dovetail jigs. The cross cut fence supplied

with the D4R and D1600 jigs allows the user to produce

sliding dovetails in a variety of sizes. You can rout attrac-

tive and strong sliding dovetail joints right out of the box

with the bit included with the jig.

ScalesSimply set the graduated scales on the D4R and D1600

finger assemblies to the joint type and board thickness.

Each scale is color coded and an icon on the scale clearly

shows the part of the joint being routed.

Infinitely Adjustable Guide FingersThe heart of a Leigh dovetail jig is its infinitely adjustable guide finger assembly. The fin-

gers of the D4R and D1600 jigs slide easily along the finger bar and lock securely to cre-

ate a unique joint pattern that perfectly matches the design and scale of your project.

Unlike fixed template jigs, Leigh jigs allow you to position a half pin at either side of

the joint, on any board width. Since each pin guide and its mating tail guide are on

the same guide finger, wherever a pin guide is positioned, the matching tail guide is

automatically set in the correct position at the other end of the finger. The pins will

always align with the sockets. It’s simple and foolproof joint design.

The two-piece fingers of the Leigh D4R allow infinite sizing and spacing of pins and

tails for through and half-blind dovetails. The one-piece design of the D1600 fingers

always maintain the most delicate pin size while still allowing complete flexibility for tail

size, and pin and tail spacing.

Router Vacuum AttachmentWork In a Dust-Free EnvironmentRouters have always been among the shop’s toughest dust

collection challenges. Now however, you can take your router off

the list, at least for Leigh Dovetail Jig work and all your edge rout-

ing chores, thanks to Leigh’s ingenious RVA1 under-the-base dust

extraction system. The RVA1 has a spring loaded roller guided dust

chute that swings in horizontally beneath your router base, sur-

rounding the bit and very effectively giving chips and dust

nowhere else to go. Even a small shop vac can give you nearly dust-

free routing on the Leigh D4R and D1600 Dovetail Jigs as well as

during freehand edge routing. The RVA1 directs your vacuum hose

vertically keeping it clear of jig parts, clamps or other nearby snag

hazards. It fits vacuum hoses with 1-1/16" to 1-1/2" inside diameter.

Will It Fit My Router? The RVA1 is a universal attachment compatible with most

common routers. Router bases must have edge guide rod holes

Item AC4R

The RVA1 quickly attaches to your router to take the mess out of edge routing.

Its adjustable height catcher is ideal for jig and fixture routing.

running through the base, either front to back or side to side, to

accommodate the attachment rods included with the RVA1.

Side-to-side rod holes must have a minimum 5/6" inside

diameter and front to back holes must have at least a 1/4" ID.

Routers with short or blind holes are not compatible with the

RVA1. A special short attachment rod is available for Porter

Cable router models 7529 and 8529.

Through Dovetails The heart of the D4R and D1600 dovetail jigs is the infinitely adjustable

finger assembly. Arrange the adjustable guide fingers in the desired pin

layout and the tail layout is created automatically and precisely. Making

these strong, beautiful joints on Leigh dovetail jigs is so easy that your

biggest challenge may be remembering to use other kinds of joints.

Whether you’re making a delicate jewelry box with sides just 1/4" thick,

an heirloom blanket chest in 3/4" hardwood or a contemporary dining room

buffet in 1-1/8" exotic timber, the D4R and D1600 let you design aesthet-

ically pleasing joints that suit both the scale and function of the work. Leigh

stocks seven sizes of 8° dovetail bits for Through dovetails giving you

absolute freedom of pin and tail sizing. The D4R handles stock from 1/8"

to 1-1/4" thick, on boards from 1" to 24" wide. The D1600 handles stock

from 1/8" to 1" thick, on boards from 7/8" to 16" wide. Read below to see

how its done!

How to Cut Through Dovetails

Jewelry Box in American black walnut with through dovetails. Karelian burl

top. 13"W x 9"D x 6"H

Cut the Tails Individually adjustable guide fingers let you quickly set up custom layouts to suit your work, and guide finger spacing is infi-nitely variable. Position the finger assembly in the Through dovetail tail mode. Icons identify joint type and the readable scale always faces you. Scalesare color coded grey for Through dovetails. All Through dovetail tails are cut at the same scale setting regardless of board thickness. The supplied tem-plate guidebush and dovetail bit mounted in your router precisely follows the guide fingers, producing perfect Through dovetail tails.

Flipping the finger assembly front to back switches the mode from Tails to Pins.

Cut the Pins Install the included straight bit in your router. The same template guidebush follows the angled guide finger surfaces to cut pinsthat will fit the sockets perfectly, joint after joint. As you can see, there is just one setup of the guide fingers, so perfect pin and socket alignment isguaranteed, no matter what joint layout you have chosen. That’s all there is to it…perfect through dovetails!

Half-Blind Dovetails Half-blind dovetails are used to make strong corner joints, such

as drawer fronts, that are invisible from the front, leaving the

figure of the wood and the design of your furniture uninter-

rupted by exposed end grain. The variable spacing of the jig’s

guide fingers allows you to create sound, classic joints regard-

less of stock width, with half pins at each edge. Half pins at the

ends of a joint are mechanically much stronger than half tails and

therefore the traditional design of choice. Flush or rabbeted half-

blind joints are equally straightforward. With Leigh’s selection

of five half-blind dovetail bits from 8° to 18°, you can produce

pins and tails properly sized to suit the thickness of any pin board.

How to Cut Half-Blind Dovetails

Drawer Case from Cabinetmaker’s Chest in black walnut and maple with half-blind

dovetails. Chest: 9"H x 31"W x 8"D

Cut the Tails Set the scale to the drawer side (tail board) thickness. Use the supplied 7/16" template guidebush and 1/2" dovetail bit to cutboth halves of the joint. Now rout all the half-blind tails. Once again, perfect pin/socket alignment is guaranteed automatically, whatever the layout, becausethere is only one setup of the guide fingers. Note: The plastic bridge piece material shown between the guide fingers comes standard with both jigs.

Flipping the finger assembly front to back switches the mode from Tails to Pins.

Cut the Pins Set the pin scale again to the drawer side (tail board) thickness and rout all the pins. Yes, it’s that simple! Leigh offers fivehalf-blind bits for any drawer-front thickness. See page 11 for selection.

Sliding Dovetails

Sliding dovetails are used to create mechanically interlocking joints in fine

furniture and shelving construction. Sliding dovetails are stronger than

dados and unlike ordinary dados, they will hold together without being

glued along the full length of the joint. This makes sliding dovetails ideal

for wide cross-grain assemblies where wood movement must be accom-

modated and controlled.

Leigh dovetail jigs come equipped with a cross cut fence that snaps into

the tail side of the finger assembly. The cross cut fence provides an

adjustable straight guide for routing grooves in horizontal workpieces and

tails in vertical workpieces up to 24" wide on the D4R and 16"wide on the

D1600.

Stock thickness and load bearing stresses on the sliding dovetail joint will

determine the necessary width and depth of the socket and correspond-

ing tail. Generally, the depth of the socket should be about 1/3 of the stock

thickness. A wide range of readily available dovetail bit widths and angles

allow you to create precisely the right size joint for your project.

How to Order: Page 34 8 Sliding dovetails – standard on Leigh Dovetail Jigs

23"W x 14"D x 12"HHow to Cut Sliding Dovetails

Cut the Sockets Set the finger assembly in the half-blind Tail mode. Mark the center of the socket on the edge of the workpiece andclamp the piece horizontally. Using the graduated scales, adjust the cross cut fence to center the bit on your layout line and rout the socket.

Cut the Tails Clamping a tail board vertically and routing one side of the tail, then turning the board around and routing the other side, centers the tail perfectly. Adjust the finger assembly for joint fit as necessary.

When a design calls for discreet, invisible joinery, blind stopped sliding dovetails are just as easy to cut as through joints.

Angled DovetailsCut angled joints just as easily as square corners. Usingshop-made angled clamp jaws, you can rout obtusejoints or even compound angled corners.

End-on-End DovetailsJoining end grain is difficult at best. End-on-enddovetails allow you to create incredibly strong jointswith a decorative touch.

Shelf Pin Holes and NotchesIf you own a plunge router, you can also use theD1600 and D4R’s guide fingers to rout parallel rowsof shelf pin holes in shelving uprights or cabinetsides up to 24" wide. Then, rout notches in the shelfends perfectly aligned to fit over the shelf pins.

Inlaid DovetailsGive your work a distinctive look. Use your favoriteexotic wood as a decorative inlay in through or half-blind dovetails.

High Quality BitsLeigh Carbide tipped router bits are among the best you can buy.

Our carbide comes from Sandvik of Sweden, the world leading

carbide manufacturer. Each bit is honed with 600 grit diamond

wheels for superbly

smooth, efficient cut-

ting. Shanks are all

1-3/4" long to handle

the thickness of the

finger assembly. All

Leigh bits are manu-

factured using ISO

9002 standards.

Shank SelectionAll Leigh Dovetail jigs are shipped with

superior strength 8mm (5/16") shank router

bits. The larger cross section (58% more mass) of 8mm shank

bits makes them considerably stronger than the smaller 1/4"

shank bits. The result, smoother faster cuts with less chatter

and of course, greater safety. A 1/2" to 8mm collet reducer is

included in every Leigh dovetail package. The collet reducer

simply slips in the 1/2" collet of your router and the 8mm

shank bits fit securely within the collet reducer. A 7/16" OD

guidebush is used with all 8mm shank bits.

Bit Selection for Through DovetailsTo match the angle cast into every guide finger, all through dovetails are cut using 8° dovetail bits for tails and one of three straight

bits for pins. Select a dovetail bit from the chart below that has a cutting depth range equal to the thickness of your pin board. Remember,

by choosing the smallest diameter dovetail bit with the correct depth of cut range, you will get the smallest pins possible for the look

of hand-cut elegance. Use the template guidebush and straight bit indicated in the chart. A 1/2", 8° dovetail bit (No.80-8) and a 5/16"

straight bit (No.140-8) are the workhorses used for work up to 13/16" thick. Both bits are standard equipment with Leigh D4R and

D1600 jigs. They are used with the supplied 7/16" o.d. template guidebush, the choice for all bits with 8mm or 1/4" shanks.

These three bits come with the D4R and D1600.

Bit Selection for Half-BlindDovetailsWith half-blind joints, the pins and tails are

cut using the same dovetail bit. The bit angle

determines the nominal depth of cut, there-

fore, a bit of a given angle must cut at or

very near a specific depth in order to make

pins and tails fit together properly. For

instance, the included 1/2" 14° dovetail bit

that comes with the D4R and D1600 jigs

must cut at a depth of 7/16". This bit is ideal

for flush drawer fronts that are a minimum

thickness of 9/16" or greater.

Choose a bit with a depth of cut 1/8" less

than the thickness of the pin board. For rab-

beted or lipped drawers, choose a bit with a

cutting depth slightly less than the rabbet’s

shoulder depth. All half-blind dovetail bits

(8mm shank) are used with the supplied

7/16" OD template guidebush.

Bit Sets for the D4R and D1600

*Comes standard with the D4R and D1600 **Recommended for the D1600 ***Recommended for the D4R

Leigh has six boxed bit sets for its dovetail jigs— all six work with the D4R and two work with the D1600. These boxed sets save you

money over buying bits individually. Each set comes standard with a free box with a precut foam insert that accepts all shank sizes and

a handy bit chart in the lid to list out all the bits specs. Combine bit sets 1607-8 and 2411-8 with the RVA1 and save even more. See p.5.

All bit sets for the D4R and D1600 come in the preferred 8mm shank size or the 1/4" shank if required. Please note bits with 1/2"shanks cannot be used on the D1600.

Finger JointTemplatesFinger joints, also called box joints, add visually striking design

to corner assemblies. Unlike dovetails, finger joints do not inter-

lock mechanically but their enormous amount of glue surface

can make them almost as strong as dovetails throughout the

life of the adhesive. Leigh’s versatile F2 and F1600 Finger Joint

Templates are the most comprehensive and accurate jigs of

their kind! The F2 produces 9 sizes and the F1600 produces six

sizes of square-cornered fingers from 1/16" to 1/2". Both tem-

plates can also cut larger joints with a simple downloadable

bulletin from our website. The F2 can also cut square half-blind

joints, and beautiful, unique rounded half-blind joints. Leigh’s

patented Variable Guidebush System (VGS), provided

with both box joint templates, guarantees you can

make every joint fit flawlessly.

VGS AccuracyJoint fit is easily and precisely controlled using Leigh’s patented Variable Guidebush System

(VGS). The set consists of four (3 on the F1600) CNC machined tapered template guide-

bushes and a common holder that mounts in the router base plate like normal template

guides. Here’s how they work. The barrel of each guide is machined at a 5° angle to match

the 5° angle machined on the template fingers. If you adjust the guide up into the router,

the effective diameter of the guide becomes smaller letting the router bit remove

more material and therefore loosening the joint. Conversely, lowering the guidebush cre-

ates a tighter fit. One eighth of a turn changes the fit by a mere one thousandth of an

inch (.001"). A nylon plug in the guide threads ensures smooth and secure adjustment.

No other system provides such simple and incredibly accurate adjustment.

The VGS comes standard with each Finger Joint Template. VGS guidebushes offer unprecedented ability to adjust

joint fit. The full 8-piece VGS is included with each F2 (7-piece for the F1600). Nominal guide sizes are 3/8", 7/16",

1/2" & 5/8". Mounting adaptors, if needed, are listed on pages 20-21. VGS shown extended, for clarity only.

Finger Joint Variations

Standard square finger joint.

How to Cut Finger Joints

Cut the Fingers Both finger and socket boards are clamped vertically in the jig. A spiral upcut straight bit that matches the size ofthe desired joint does all the cutting for both pieces. Place the control pin in the hole marked with the finger icon, clamp the workpiece verti-cally in the jig and rout the fingers.

For finger-jointed corners, one board starts with a finger, the other with a socket. The template moves left or right to position thetemplate for each cut. A control pin secures the template in the correct position.

Cut the Sockets Remove the control pin, slide the guide comb template sideways to the next position (the distance between fin-ger centers) and insert the pin in the hole marked by the socket icon. The control pin positioning holes are always at the opposite end of the activeportion of the comb template and do not interfere with the router. Rout the second half of your joint, adjust the fit as needed with the VGS andthen produce as many perfectly fitted boxes as you please.

All finger joints are

cut with straight bits

and Leigh Industries

offers two variants; a

two flute spiral

upcut in High Speed

Steel and a Solid

Carbide version. The

spiral upcut design

cuts cleaner, faster,

leaves a smoother

finish and dra-

matically reduces

tearout. Although

both produce excel-

lent results, the solid

carbide versions are

stiffer and they hold

a keen edge longer

than the HSS. Choose

the bit that best

suits your needs and

budget.**

** **

Leigh has four boxed spiral upcut bit sets for the F2 and

F1600 templates, two High Speed Steel (HSS) and two

Solid Carbide (SC). Solid Carbide spiral upcut bits are for

those that have to have the best! Although they are

expensive, they will outlast the rest.

Most 1/2" collet routers come with 1/4" collets or

collet reducers, or they are commonly available. The

5/16" (8mm) and 3/8" shank sizes are not common so

we have included collet reducers 172-8 and 172-375

in the sets below.

Isoloc™ Joint TemplatesThe Dovetail joint has been the hallmark of excellence for centuries. No other method

of joinery offered the distinctive look and incredible strength of this mechanically

interlocking joint until Leigh invented the Isoloc joint.

Leigh’s revolutionary Isoloc joints represent the first entirely practical alternative

to traditional dovetail joinery. With a Leigh Dovetail jig and an Isoloc template, even

novice woodworkers can produce strong, functional and distinctively attractive joints.

Six innovative designs make it easy to match a joint style to your project.

Joint fit is precisely controlled using Leigh’s patented Variable Guidebush System

(VGS), a unique adjustable 3-piece tapered template guidebush that can be adjust-

ed up or down, changing the joint fit in increments of .001".

All Isoloc joints are cut with a 5/16" straight bit. Solid carbide spiral upcut bits produce the best

results. Solid carbide’s great rigidity and excellent edge retention, together with the spiral bits

superbly clean cutting, gives you the best performance possible with your Isoloc template.

A plunge router is recommended as it’s preferable to rout the horizontal socket boards

in multiple passes. The depth stops on plunge routers

make this process safe, efficient and precise.

To cut inlaid Isoloc joints you need additional

1/4" and 3/8" bits. Check the shank sizes and order

the appropriate collet reducers.

Bit Selection for Isoloc Joints

How to Cut Isoloc Joints

Cut the Pins Isoloc templates require very little setup. Set the scales on the left and right of the template to the thickness of the pinboard (drawer front). Next, use the stainless steel pin to position the template in the Pin mode indicated by the icon. Set the cutting depth to matchthe thickness of the drawer side (tail board) and rout the pins.

Cut the Tails Remove the stainless steel pin, move the template to the Tail mode and reinsert the pin. Then, mount the tail boardhorizontally in the jig. There is no need to adjust the scales or cutting depth. Rout the tails and make adjustments for fit as required. Remember, adjustments for fit can be made in increments of .001". That’s it. You have just created one of the most visually distinctive joints possible.

Multiple Mortise andTenon AttachmentThe layout and cutting of multiple mortise and tenon joints

demands such a high level of time-consuming care and

craftsmanship that these striking joints are usually found only

in the most sophisticated hand-made furniture. Leigh’s M2,

Multiple Mortise and Tenon Attachment however, brings

this challenging joint within easy reach of any woodworker

who owns a 24" D-series Dovetail Jig and a plunge router with

a 1/2" collet. The M2’s adjustable guide fingers let you cut

multiple mortise and tenon joints in virtually any layout you

like, in stock up to 24" wide. Mortises and tenons can be cut

in sizes from delicate 5/16" x 5/8" to muscular 1-1/2" x 2-1/2".

Jumbo JointsHalf-Blind and Box JointsHalf-blind dovetails are made with straight guide fingers, as with the D4R

and straight fingers are what you get on the M2 attachment —so yes, it's a

half-blind dovetail jig too. Using either of the two largest dovetail bits for

D-Series Jigs and a special template guidebush for each bit, you can cut jumbo

half-blind dovetails. The 11/16" No.90 dovetail bit works with template

guidebush No.717TP to cut half-blind dovetails 1" deep and the 13/16"

No.100 bit works with guide No.720TP to cut them 1-1/4" deep. These tem-

plate guides must be paired with their respective bits to cut dovetails on the

M2. The M2 User Guide includes instructions for both jumbo finger joints and

jumbo half-blind dovetails. Maximum board thickness is 1-1/2".

Cut the Mortises Mount the M2 template onyour D4R jig in the mortise mode. Adjust the fingers to themultiple mortise and tenon layout you like. The tem-plate guidebush steers your router against the fingersthrough three sides of the mortise. An adjustable fence, the mortise beam, guides your router base as you cutthe fourth side. Set your depth of cut for either blind orthrough mortising.

Cut the Tenons Remove the mortise beam and flipthe finger assembly over to the tenon mode. While thefinger layout establishes the width of your tenons, thescales determine their thickness. Rout one side of thetenons, flip the tenon piece and finger assembly left toright and round off the other side of the tenon.

corners. Use it with a 1/2" to 8mm (5/16") collet reducer, No.172-8 (see page

10). For heavier joinery in boards 3/4" to 1-1/2" thick, a 1/2" bit (Leigh No.180

or 180C) cuts quickly and smoothly. Leigh sells both HSS and solid carbide

spiral bits. Note: No.180 1/2" HSS spiral bit comes standard with the M2.

Using Routers with Leigh JigsRouters are one of the most versatile tools in your shop and Leigh jigs are compatible with

almost every router on the market.

Fixed base routers between 1-1/2 and 2-1/4 hp with 1/2" collets are recommended for most

operations on Leigh dovetail jigs. Fixed base routers tend to be smaller and lighter and are

easier to maneuver over the finger assembly. All dovetail and finger joint routing can be done

with a fixed base router. Plunge routers are recommended for some Isoloc operations and

are a must for routing mortises using the M2 Multiple Mortise and Tenon Attachment.

Select the Correct Template Guidebush and Adaptor for your RouterA template guidebush is required for all routing operations. An industry standard 7/16" OD guidebush (Leigh 711TP) is supplied with

all Leigh jigs and if required, Leigh has a comprehensive assortment of guidebush adaptors to fit most common routers.

Refer to the list below and chart on the facing page to select the correct guidebush and adaptor (if required) for your router. Note:

The D4R and D1600 Jigs include the 711TP template guidebush. Follow the instructions below to find out if the 711TP fits your router

or if you need a different template guide.
