As we go to print with this issue of Leisure Scene, the CSSC Games 2015 has just taken place, and we were honoured to have had a visit from our patron HRH The Duchess of Gloucester. See p.8.

This issue we are focussing on getting our members fit and healthy. Find out why even a few minutes of exercise every day can make a huge difference to your health, and how CSSC can help you achieve this; see p.16. Also, read about CSSC’s Physical Activity Fund, another way of helping you get fit and stay healthy; read all about it on p.10.

We are also launching a search to find our longest standing members! Could it be you? Or someone you know? This issue we talk to Ernie Hedgecock who has been a member since 1948, see p.15.

We also talk to the three amazing girls from CSSC who conquered the Three Peaks Challenge to raise over £10,000 for The Charity for Civil Servants! Read all about it on p.12.

Enjoy the read,

CSSC GAMES 2015

8

The 17/18 September saw the hosting of the biennial CSSC Games at Loughborough

University, with over 1,000 competitors and 80 volunteers in attendance, all

of whom were CSSC members. The competitors travelled from all corners

of the UK to compete in one of the fifteen available sports, which were:

athletics, archery, badminton, basketball, fencing, football (open, ladies’ and

masters’), golf, hockey, karting, netball, rounders, table tennis and touch rugby.

We were delighted that our patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester, was able to join us for the first day of this year’s Games. She enjoyed meeting many of those involved, who were all generous with the time they gave to discuss their individual roles and show their great enthusiasm for the event. The Duchess met with many of the volunteers and staff members, as well as taking a trip around the campus with Simon Lee, CSSC’s Chief Executive, to meet those taking part, and to watch the action unfold. Members enjoyed two days of brilliant sport. When they weren’t taking part themselves, they were watching other colleagues and friends take part, or generally enjoying the atmosphere around the campus which replicated that of a mini-Olympic Games tournament! As always at the CSSC Games, our members showed great humility and sportsmanship, and the volunteers who helped run the event did so with real professionalism. We always come away from the Games absolutely buzzing, thrilled to have spent two days with so many amazing people, glad to know that everyone involved is making a positive difference to the lives of our members.

To complement the action of the sports, everyone enjoyed a fun night out on the Thursday evening. Competitors, spectators, volunteers and organisers all came together for a hilarious evening of themed entertainment! The theme was ‘Zoo’, which resulted in many wild and wonderful fancy dress outfits. A good night was had by all! Of course, many revellers

needed to be bright eyed and bushy tailed the next morning for more competitive sport, so naturally everyone was completely sensible and got a nice early night…!

Marie says, “The money from the Physical Activity Fund has made it possible for a lot of people (men and women) to try something they may not have thought about doing. Our site is full of multi-departments and is not walking distance from the shops and is extremely close to a very busy main road, so this has been a great way of doing some sort of exercise at work. It’s a good way of escaping the intensity of our jobs, great for morale and team interaction between different departments. This has proved very popular and has also been an insight into what other activities and funding CSSC can offer.”

Matt says, “As someone who is passionate

about teaching handball to beginners, the

CSSC Physical Activity Fund was perfect

for me. Although we had a facility, we

had no equipment, so the fund allowed

us to buy goals and balls to cater for a

large amount of interest, which we would

have lost had the grant not been awarded

quickly. The feedback from the sessions has

been excellent and there is a noticeable

buzz about handball around the site, with

many people engaging with it outside the

sessions. Throughout, CSSC also provided

support to help us start and have been

invaluable ever since.”

CSSC THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

12

Jennifer Cuthbert: “This challenge was one of the most exhilarating, enlightening and exhausting events of my life! The precise and perfectly executed planning from Andy and Jon was a major contributing factor to our success. The walking team was made up of a determined, devoted and slightly, ok extremely, competitive trio of girls; however, we were ‘driven’ by a support team also made up of the same defining traits! Ben Nevis was the first peak and had some of the hardest terrain we faced on the entire challenge; snow squalls and death defying drops which made us walk with caution and precision and was completely nerve-racking.

We raised over £10k for The Charity for Civil Servants!

Congratulations to our team of walkers – Jennifer Cuthbert, Michelle Russell and Natalie Parry – who conquered the Three Peaks Challenge with 45 minutes to spare! Here is their story:

Natalie Parry: “The camaraderie from my fellow walkers and the support team was a real motivator, and the good humour and encouragement (as well as the insane calorie intake) between the mountains gave me the energy and conviction to keep going. Ben Nevis was the most beautiful – the summit covered deep with snow. Scafell Pike was a jagged and slippery march with harsh rain. Finally, with little left in the tank, sleep deprived and heart burn from all the Mars bars, we set off up Snowdon. Luckily, I had the mighty Jon Bunyan who was amazing at distracting me, and motivating me when the jelly legs took over. Finally, we reached the summit, well within time, and at that moment we knew we had done it! Elated and proud we meandered back down, and were greeted by our wonderful support team. I would like to thank each and every member of the team, what a wonderful experience! And to all the CSSC volunteers who helped us fundraise – we hit the target, we conquered the Three Peaks, a true team effort!”

The thought of setting off up Scafell Pike at 4am was daunting, but even with the terrible rain and wind, we absolutely smashed it, shaving 20 minutes off the anticipated time. This gave us the motivation we needed for the final slog up Snowdon, plus we were met there by Jon Bunyan who walked with us, and he was the inspiration we needed! His fresh legs and encouraging enthusiasm was the driving force that got us up and down in record time! As we walked the final steps, 45 minutes ahead of the 24 hour time limit, we were greeted by our outstanding support team cheering us in; it was a moment I will remember for a long time, and to know we accomplished this together, as a team, and were able to donate over £10,000 to the Charity that helps so many members and their families, made the 23¼ hours of extremely testing times completely worth every step!”

We raised over £10k for The Charity for Civil Servants!

The aim of the Three Peaks Challenge is to climb up (and down) the three highest mountains in England (Scafell Pike), Scotland (Ben Nevis) and Wales (Snowdon), in a 24 hour period, including travelling times in between. The timings mean that one mountain must be climbed in the dark! The total walking distance is 26 miles, taking in an ascent of 9,800 feet. CSSC’s walking team was backed up by a dedicated

support team: Andy Burdett, Pete James, Danny Brady, Hedley Featherstone, Jennifer Fell, Matt Taylor, Jade Knowlden and Alastair Smart. Not forgetting Jon Bunyan, the man behind the whole idea, and who, alongside Andy Burdett, organised the event, arranging everything from training walks, flights and accommodation, to suitable meals and snacks, driving rotas and emergency protocol.

Michelle Russell: “The challenge was both physically and mentally tough. Due to the start time we went without sleep for 40 hours; we had no room to stretch our legs between mountains and were constantly hungry. The management of the challenge was phenomenal however; meaning we only had to concentrate on keeping our legs moving, which was hard enough. I could not have asked to do this challenge with two nicer people, Natalie and Jennifer; and together we kept each other motivated. This was not an easy challenge, so I am happy that so many people contributed and £11,000 is going to a great cause. Completing the challenge with 45 minutes to spare was the icing on the cake!”

CSSC BOARD

The CSSC Board and YOU!

“I have been a member of the CSSC Board for over a year and I have found the experience a fulfilling one, giving me the opportunity to influence thinking on important and strategic issues.

I have continued to attend CSSC events in the South West and participate in others. This has enabled me to keep in touch with

other CSSC members to gauge their thoughts on various issues and be aware of their views and experiences when considering Board business.

Again this year I attended the CSSC Annual Conference and the AGM. The Conference provides an excellent opportunity to talk to colleagues from all over the UK to discuss topical issues and challenges and, most importantly, to hear from the numerous ‘Good Practice’ sessions.

What conclusions have I drawn from my experience of the last year? There are probably three:

• As an organisation, CSSC is in good health in all respects; it is a well-run organisation that acts on the needs of the membership.

• CSSC head office and the Board (including supporting committees) do not operate on an ivory tower basis. Rather the opposite is the case.

• The health and success of CSSC is significantly dependent on the huge number of volunteers who make it possible for CSSC to offer and sustain such a diverse range of activities throughout the UK.

I hope that my brief experience so far as a CSSC Board member might encourage some of you to think about standing for election in 2016. Fresh thinking and ideas are always welcome. Indeed, they are essential to sustain a vibrant and inclusive CSSC.”

“I have been a member of CSSC for so long I can’t remember exactly how many years! Encouraged by my old department, BIS,

where, even though retired, I have long been involved in organising their lunchtime language classes, I decided to stand for election to the CSSC Board.

I feel that with a vastly changed and smaller civil service, CSSC must continue to review and adapt its recruitment and retention strategies. From my previous job experience, I have a good understanding of both the public sector and private sector cultures, and I felt I could make a contribution in helping CSSC face challenges in an increasingly competitive environment.”

We are now seeking nominations for the 2016 Board elections. For more information, please see the enclosed nomination form, visit: cssc.co.uk/BoardNomination or contact: [email protected] / 01494 888451.

Stuart Fraser Janis Cammell

You might not realise it but the decisions that are made by the CSSC Board affect every single member, just like you. So, if you’re the sort of member who’d like to help set the strategic direction for our organisation and help shape our future, why not think about becoming a Board member? Read on to hear about the experiences of two of your current Board members.

LEISURECSSC BOARD

We know Ernie Hedgecock is one of them, having joined CSSC back in 1948, but might you know someone who has been a member for even longer?

First of all, let’s meet Ernie, and find out what CSSC membership meant for our members 67 years ago!

ERNIE HEDGECOCK, CSSC MEMBER SINCE 1948

“I started work in 1948 at the age of 14 or 15 as an apprentice engineer at the Central Ordnance Depot Donnington – known as Coddon. In our area, at the time, CSSC also stood for Coddon Sports & Social Club!

I joined CSSC (Civil Service Sports Council) mainly to play indoor and outdoor sports, and also because the employment officer was a CSSC member and recruited all new personnel! I became a CSSC committee member of the Telford Area Association in 1959.

Back in the early days of CSSC, there were not a lot of benefits like there are today. Although sport was involved, the hub of activity was in the social clubs, mainly for a meeting place and indoor sports. We had four snooker teams, two darts teams, a chess team and a badminton team. The club also created a friendly atmosphere for members to meet socially, especially at weekends when we enjoyed entertainment and dancing.

I was never a fantastic sportsman but I enjoyed the exercise, and through my CSSC membership I enjoyed quite a lot. Football was played in a minor league, our kit was supplied by the club and the pitch was within the Depot perimeter. We never achieved fame but we enjoyed it!

Cricket was another favourite, playing friendly games on both Saturdays and Sundays, and all day fixtures against other MOD workshops at Derby, Branston, Chilwell and Bicester. Again, the club paid for all our cricket gear. The club also subsidised all expenses and all juniors under the age of 21 played for free. I enjoyed swimming too, and arranged a night booking for CSSC in the local swimming pool. After achieving my Lifesaving Awards, I became part-time manager of the pool.

In my ageing years, CSSC has been good for me, allowing me to participate in loads of activities which maybe I might not otherwise have done.”

Our records go back a long way, but for some of our longest standing members the system can’t tell us when they first joined CSSC, so we are on a mission to find them.

If you, or someone you know, has been a member since the 1940s or earlier and would be interested in being featured in Leisure Scene, please email: [email protected]

It is officially recommended that we undertake at least 20 minutes of moderate exercise every day. ‘Moderate’ exercise should allow you to talk but you should be too out of breath to sing the words to a song. And whilst those who do follow this advice should be able to reap the benefits of being healthier, new research has now shown that, so long as you exercise regularly, anything is apparently better than nothing, and even just a few minutes, every day, can help you live longer. So if you can’t quite make the full 20 minutes, don’t think there’s no point bothering – just a few minutes every day is enough to make a difference.

Regular exercise not only helps to give us an overall base level of fitness but it has been shown that regular exercise can play a vital role in keeping many illnesses at bay, with research showing that it can help delay the effects of dementia, as well as helping with the symptoms of depression, with doctors now ‘prescribing’ regular exercise to patients suffering from depression.

The findings also suggest that damage from heart disease or heart failure could be at least partially repaired through 30 minutes of running or cycling every day. The research has been published in order to encourage older people to take part in sport or other exercise under a new government drive to beat dementia, reduce the risk of cancer and to help keep older hearts healthy.

There are many reasons why our members have joined CSSC, some people join for the sport, others join for the special offers, many people join for the leisure activities we offer and some just join for the great value cinema tickets! However, we want everyone to go back to CSSC’s roots – the very reason CSSC started in the first place all those years ago: it was all about creating a more active, more fit, more healthy workforce for the civil service. If employees are happy and healthy – they are going to be more effective and productive workers! So, whatever your reasons for joining CSSC, why not make the most of all the opportunities that CSSC can open up for you, and start making a difference to your health?

Are you struggling to fit exercise into your life? Let CSSC help you! From taster days where you can try something new, to joining the football league, CSSC has so much to offer*. Ask around the office, maybe there are things going on in your place of work that you didn’t know about. If not, maybe you could start something new; get a group of colleagues together and CSSC can help you start your own activity. See p.10 for more information on our Physical Activity Fund.

A MESSAGE TO EMPLOYERSMillions of working days are lost each year because workers are off sick, and more and more companies are implementing Health and Wellbeing Programmes into their workplace, to show their support to their employees – to encourage healthy lifestyles, not just at work but also at home. A Health and Wellbeing Programme can bring exciting changes to a workforce by giving them opportunities to be active and healthy, to network and team-build with colleagues, and to take part in activities together. Employers will reap the rewards for the investment in their staff: a happier, healthier, more effective and productive workforce. And CSSC can help you fulfil this role!

“ CSSC has offered opportunities to DDC staff to become involved in sports and social activities not currently available. Membership has been taken up by more than 50% of our staff and every day more enquiries are being made”

CSSC is pleased to announce the launch of its very own Volunteer

App, created specifically to help volunteers locate important information from CSSC. According to the NCVO (National Council for Voluntary Organisations) this is a ground-breaking initiative in supporting volunteers. To access the Volunteer App you will need either an iPhone or iPad with iBooks, or a PDF viewer already installed (iBooks is normally free and installed by default). Once the App has been downloaded, you will not need an internet connection to view the files, the App will also automatically update itself every time you open it when connected to the internet. This will ensure that the files are always the latest version.

An android version is currently in development and will be released shortly. To install and then access the App, please follow the instructions on our website or contact [email protected] for more information.

Anyone who has played CSSC ladies’ hockey in the last 50 years will know the name Joyce Cole (pictured left). When I, Marcia Burgess, first joined CSSC and competed in my first Joyce Cole Cup, I found myself having an in depth conversation about the game

we were watching with a lady stood on the side of the pitch. As I walked away at the end of the game, my team mate said, ‘I see you were talking to Joyce.’ I was shocked! I, like many others, had not realised that the cup we were playing for that day was named after Joyce and that she would be at the tournament itself! In 2016, this living legend will celebrate her 90th birthday and CSSC ladies’ hockey would like you to help us party with her.

The annual Joyce Cole Cup and the men’s Hancock & Evans Tournament will both take place at Beeston Hockey Club on Thursday 28 and Friday

29 April 2016 and we are going to make it a party! Our plans are still coming together but there will be music and reminiscing in the bar at Beeston on Thursday night and a back-to-hockey session on Friday, perfect if it has been a while since you picked up a stick! We are also planning a mixed game on the Thursday evening.

It will be a real festival of hockey over the two days and we want as many teams as possible to take part – it doesn’t matter if you haven’t played for a while, or if you’re not yet part of a team – dust off those hockey sticks and drum up some players from your colleagues, and then get in touch with Marcia Burgess ([email protected]). You are also more than welcome to come along if you just want to watch! (Please still let us know if you’re coming as a spectator.) Come and help us to celebrate with Joyce Cole in style. More information is available on the CSSC website hockey page.

After the racing there are social events, culminating in a prize-giving dinner at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Cowes. All CSSC members can take part. Crews and boats represent their departments, organisations, or clubs. Crews are made up of a mixture of experienced, less experienced, and novice sailors, however, all boats require an experienced skipper and one or more competent sailors. Racing takes place on Beneteau Oceanis 37 boats chartered from Fairview Sailing (Hamble), which take a maximum crew of eight, including the skipper. The skipper will need to satisfy Fairview’s requirements - RYA Yachmaster Coastal qualification or equivalent. If you don’t have a skipper with sufficient experience, Fairview can supply one (around £140 per day). The overall cost of yacht charter, berthing, race entry and regatta dinner is around £2000 per boat, or £250-£300 per person. For more information visit: idor.org.uk, or email: [email protected]
