Director’s ReportI am pleased to share the 2012-2013 Annual Report of the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies at the University of Illinois. It has been a busy and productive year, with the continuation of many programs and the launch of several new initiatives.

The Lemann Institute continued to expand its scope and reach during the past year. Brazil continues to be a country on the rise, which means increased interest in Brazil on the part of University of Illinois students, faculty, and ad-ministrators. Highlights of the academic year included a visit by Chancellor Phyllis Wise to Brazil along with state of Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn, a visit to campus by the President of Brazil’s Central Bank, Alexandre Tombini, a visit to campus by Director Denis Mizne of the Fundação Lemann, and the development of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) on campus.

The Lemann Institute led campus efforts to engage with BSMP, and with the help of an enthusiastic team of faculty and staff, found ways to improve the program at Illinois. As a result, the University of Illinois had the fifth-largest number of BSMP undergraduate students in the U.S., with 39 undergraduates, 12 Ph.D. students, and 4 post-doc-toral scholars. The Institute supported efforts to strengthen the BSMP by providing funding for faculty to build links with Brazilian researchers and institutions and by developing webpages with information about BSMP intended for Illinois faculty and Brazilian undergraduate and graduate students.

The Institute is reaching its planned capacity as new programs have been initiated. The Lemann Chair in Brazilian History, Dr. Jerry Dávila, assumed his position in fall 2012. The Lemann Leadership Scholarship program for Central Bank of Brazil employees also began last fall.

The Lemann Institute sponsored many successful scholarly and cultural events during the 2012-2013 academic year. In September 2012, the Institute hosted the BRASA XI Congress at the University of Illinois, which drew over 350 Brazilianist scholars from all over the world. During the academic year, the Institute organized twenty-three lectures given by scholars and graduate students from Illinois, the U.S. and Brazil. Other events co-sponsored by the Lemann Institute included the Latin American Film Festival, the Mostra Brazilian Film Series, the Joint Area Centers Symposium on “The Future of Waste” and a Brazilian Film Night during the 2013 International Week.

The following report describes in greater detail the many accomplishments of the Lemann Institute during 2012-2013. Through new courses and programs, research and exchange, lectures, conferences, and cultural events, the Institute is having a major impact at the University of Illinois.

Lemann Chair in Brazilian History ReportfromtheChairHolder,Dr.JerryDavila IarrivedattheUniversityofIllinoislastsummerandhavebeendelightedbythesupportandenthusiasmforBrazilianStudiesIhaveencounteredacrosscampus.ThisinterestmanifesteditselffromtheoutsetinopportunitiestoparticipateinplanningbothfortheDepartmentofHistoryandtheLemannInstitute.WithintheDepartmentofHistory,IservedontheGraduateAdmissionsCommittee,andampleasedthatwehaverecruitedanincomingstudentstudyingBrazil,andthatastudentadmittedthepreviousyearhaschangedherfieldofstudyfromRussiatoBrazil,establishingacohortinthisarea.Ialsoparticipatedinthedepartment’splanningcommitteeforfuturefacultyhiring.HeretheDepartmentofHistory’scommitmenttobuildingonitslegacyofscholarshipandtraininginBrazilianhistoryhasbeenexplicit.TheyearendedwiththerecruitmentofDr.MarcHertzmanfromColumbiaUniversity,whoisaspecialistinBrazilianculturalhistoryandmusic.Inaddition,thedepartment’srequestfornewfacultypositionsfornextacademicyearfocusesontwoareasthatarecriticalforbuildingthecontextforBrazilianStudies:ahistorianofLatinAmericaduringthecolonialera,andahistorianofWestAfricawithaninterestintheslavetradeandAtlanticconnections.Shouldthepositionsbeapproved,IwillchairtheWestAfricasearchandserveasamemberoftheColonialLatinAmericasearchcommittee.TheDepartmentofHistory’scommitmenttobeinganationalleaderinBrazilianHistory,demonstratedbyitsallocationoffacultyandgraduatestudentlines,hasexceededmyexpectations.WithintheLemannInstitute,IhaveservedontheFacultyAdvisoryCommitteeandtheSubcommitteeonStudyAbroadandhavechairedthebooksintranslationcommittee.IhavebeenimpressedwithMaryArends‐Kuenning’sleadership,andtheeffectivenesswithwhichshehasworkedtoinvestfacultyintheworkoftheInstitute.Overthecourseoftheyear,mybookDictatorshipinSouthAmericawaspublishedbyWileyBlackwell,andmyrecentbookHotelTrópico:BrazilandtheChallengeofAfricanDecolonization,wasawardedtheLatinAmericanStudiesAssociationBrazilSectionBookPrize.IalsoeditedandwrotetheintroductiontoaspecialissueofthejournalTheLatinamericanist,drawingtogetherscholarsfromBrazilandtheUnitedStatestoexaminenewtendenciesinthestudyofBrazilianracerelationsinthecontextofrapidlychangingracialpolitics.InJanuary,IdeliveredthekeynoteaddressfortheMidwestLatinAmericanHistoryConference.Inaddition,IlecturedattheUniversidadeFederaldoEstadodeSãoPaulo(UNIFESP)andMichiganStateUniversity,andpresentedorcommentedonpapersatthe

conferencesoftheAmericanHistoricalAssociation,theBrazilianStudiesAssociation,theSoutheasternCouncilonLatinAmericanStudies,andtheUCBerkeleyBig‐HConference.IamdelightedtobeatIllinoisastheLemannChairinBrazilianHistoryandlookforwardtoanotherproductiveyearin2013‐2014.

CARLAALMEIDASANTOSAssociateProfessorandDirectorofGraduateStudiesCo‐Director,TourismLabforEconomicandSocialBehaviorResearchDepartmentofRecreation,SportandTourism,CollegeofAppliedHealthSciencesTourismAndSocioeconomicRealitiesInBrazil:AFramingAnalysisThisprojectanalyzedarticlesonBrazilinthebusinessandtravelsectionsoftheNewYorkTimes,USAToday,andTheWallStreetJournalfrom2005through2011.ThepurposeofthestudywastoexaminehowBrazilisportrayedincontemporarymediaasbothacompetitiveglobaleconomyandatourismdestinationandunderstandthesocio‐culturaldimensionsembeddedinthesenewspapers’representations.Dr.Santosidentified,read,andcoded900articlesandexaminedrelevantliteratureinthefield.Thestudyusesrecentliteraturethatdescribeshowdifferentlevelsofframes,knownasmicro,meso,andmacro,conveydifferentinformationbutinteracttoproducemessagesforreaders.Themeso‐frame,consistingofthefrequentlyrepeatingcharacterizationsaboutBrazil,servesasthepointofdepartureforuncoveringthemicro‐andmacro‐frameswhosepresenceisnotnecessarilyasovert.Themicro‐framessurfacewhenconsideringthedifferentattitudesthataredemonstratedtowardsthecharacterizations,andthemacro‐framesemergethroughasynthesisofthecharacterizationsrevealingcontradictory,yetmeaningfulportrayalsofBrazil.ThepreliminarystudyrevealedcontradictorymessagesaboutBrazilasabusinessversusatouristdestination.OntheonehandBrazilisportrayedashavingarapidly‐changingdynamiceconomy,greatfordoingbusiness,andontheotherasbeinganeternallyfundestinationwherenothingchangesandthepeoplearealwaysfriendlyandlaid‐back.TheseportrayalsseemtodevaluethepeopleofBrazilbycharacterizingtheasbeingassetsforthetouristindustrybutnotcontributingtotheeconomyinameaningfulway.Dr.SantospresentedpreliminaryfindingsattheBRASAXIconference,whereitreceivedpositiveinitialfeedbackandsuggestionsforfuturedevelopment.Sheiscurrentlyintheprocessofrevisingherstudyforsubmissiontooneortwotourismconferenceandultimatelytoajournalforpublicationin2013.AbenefitofDr.Santos’sresearchhasbeenconnectingwithscholarsinBrazil.Shewillnowactivelypursueresearchrelationshipsthere.Shebelievesherresearchactivitieshaveenhancedhervaluetoherdepartment,collegeandUniversitybyincreasingherknowledgeofBrazil,aswellasofmediatheoryandpractice,culturalidentity,andtourism.Beyondcontributiontotheliterature,suchknowledgealsoenhanceshereffectivenessinservingontheboardsoftheCenterforLatinAmericanandCaribbeanStudies(CLACS),andtheHumanDimensionsofEnvironmentalSystems(HDES)andsupportscampusprioritiesofstrengtheninginternationalties,engagingininterdisciplinaryscholarship,andincreasinginternationalvisibility.

DAVIDWRIGHTAssociateProfessorDepartmentofEnglish–CreativeWritingAndintheRuinedHouses,anovelResearchsupportfromtheLemannInstitutewasinstrumentalinenablingProfessorWrighttocompletehisnovel,AndintheRuinedHouses.Priortoreceivingthegrant,hehadtoputhisworkonthenovelonhold,becauseheneededresourcesthatwereunavailablehereattheUniversity.ThroughtheLemannInstitutegrant,ProfessorWrightwasabletospendthreeweeksinBahia,thesiteofhisnovel,wherehecompletedhisresearch.HeinterviewedLouisDoSacramento,adescendantoftheslavebrothershewritesaboutinRuinedHousesandreviewed1930scorrespondencebetweentheDahomeanandBahianbranchesofthefamily.HealsorevieweddocumentsandresourcesinSalvador,primarilyattheCityMuseumandattheNauticalMuseum.

DuringhistimeinBrazil,hecompletedthefirsthalfofthemanuscriptandfinishedituponreturningtotheU.S.CompletionofthenovelwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithouttheresearchandexperiencesProfessorWrightgainedthroughtheLemannInstitutegrant.HeisnowintheprocessofworkingwithaliteraryagenttoapproachNewYorkpublisherswiththebook.Additionally,theLemannInstitutegrantenabledProfessorWrighttomakesignificantcontactsinBraziltopresentandgetfeedbackonthemanuscript.MostnotableamongthesewasFabioDurãooftheUniversidadeEstudualdeCampinas(UNICAMP),whoinvitedProfessorWrighttopresentonRuinedHousestohisgraduatestudentsandarrangedalectureattheUniversidadeFederaledeJuizdeFora(UFJF).Some200professorsandstudentsattendedthelecture.Botheventswereimportant,becausetheytookplaceatacrucialphaseofthewritingprocess.ThiscollaborationhasencouragedProfessorKnightandProfessorDurãotoworktogetheronotherprojects,inparticulartheteachingofcreativewritingintheuniversity.PlansarebeingdevelopedforProfessorKnighttoconductamonth‐longsymposiumforliteratureprofessorsfromUNICAMPandUFJFontheteachingofcreativewriting,whichdoesnotexistasacourseofstudyinBrazil.

IRENEV.SMALLAssistantProfessorofArtandArchaeologyPrincetonUniversitySituatingTransmission:HerculeFlorenceandtheInventionofPhotographyinBrazilThe2011‐2012LemannFacultyFellowshipenabledProfessorSmalltoconductextensiveresearchrelatedtoherworkonHerculeFlorenceandtheinventionofphotographyinBrazil.Asacasestudyof"situated"technologicalinnovation,theprojectstandstoofferbothimportanthistoricalinsightandacompellingmodelforthinkingaboutboththepossibilitiesandlimitsofthedispersedandglobalizednatureofcommunicationtechnologytoday.ThefundsprovidedbytheLemannFellowshipenabledProfessorSmalltohirearesearchertoconductextensivebibliographicresearchandtoacquireresearchmaterialsthatareunavailableorhardtofindintheUnitedStates.ShewasalsoabletotraveltoBraziltoconductresearchinpublicandprivatearchivesinSãoPauloandRiodeJaneiroandmeetwithspecialistsandhistorianswhohaveworkedwiththeprimaryand/orhistoricalmaterialatstake.ArchivalmaterialsattheInstitutoHerculeFlorencehavebeenparticularlyimportantinconceptualizingtheproject.AmongthevaluablecontactsshemadeinBrazilwereProfessorRosanaHorioMonteiro(througharesearchassistant),ahistorianofvisualcultureandresearchmethodsattheUniversidadeFederaldeGoiás;ProfessorFelipeToledo,zoologistatUniversidadeEstadualdeCampinasanddirectoroftheFontecaNeotropicalJacquesVielliard;DirceuFrancoFerreira,historianof19thcenturyEuropeanexpeditionsinBrazilanddirectoroftheInstitutoHerculeFlorence;andBorisKossoy,ProfessorattheUniversidadedeSãoPauloandhistorianofphotographyattheEscoladeComunicaçõeseArtes,DepartamentodeJornalismoeEditoração.Theselattertwomeetingswereespeciallyfruitfulintermsofestablishingresearchrelationships;ProfessorKossoyparticularwasespeciallyinterestedinfurthercollaborationswiththeLemannInstitute,perhapsasavisitingscholar.

WAÏLS.HASSANAssociateProfessorPrograminComparativeandWorldLiteratureArabImmigrationtoBrazilTheLemannFacultyFellowshipenabledProfessorHassantospendamonthinRiodeJaneiroduringtheperiodJuly6‐August5,2010topursuePortugueselanguagestudyandresearchonArabimmigrationtoBrazil.Heenrolledinathree‐weekintensivePortugueselanguagecourseatPUC‐RiothatiswidelyconsideredtobethebestprogramofitskindinBrazil.Therigorouscourse,whichconsistedofsixhoursofinstructionperday,enabledProfessorHassantoimprovebothhisreadingabilityandspeakingfluencyinPortuguesetoagreaterdegreeinashorteramountoftimethananypreviouslanguagecourses.ThesecondobjectiveforProfessorHassan’svisittoRiowastointerviewsomewritersandscholarswhofocusonArabimmigrationtoBrazil.HewasabletointerviewthenovelistAlbertoMussa,acclaimedauthorofthreenovels,ashortstorycollection,andabookonTupimythologyandtranslatorofpre‐IslamicArabicpoetryintoPortuguese.Eachoneofhisworkshaswonanationalorinternationalprize.TheinformationgleanedabouthisbackgroundandhisworkwillformthebasisofanarticleProfessorHassaniswritingandpossiblyachapterinabookonArabBrazilianliterature.ProfessorHassanwasalsoabletoconductresearchonearlyArabimmigrationtoBrazilattheBibliotecaNacional,wherehehadaccesstomaterialsthatareunavailableintheU.S.,suchasseveralvolumesofthecollectedworksofJamilSafady,thepioneerofArabandArabBrazilianstudiesattheUniversityofSãoPauloandthedoctoraldissertationonArabimmigrationtoBrazilofhisbrotherSalimSafady.

FLAVIAC.D.ANDRADEAssistantProfessorKinesiologyandCommunityHealth,CollegeofAppliedHealthSciencesLifeExpectancyandHealthyLifeExpectancyinBrazilTheLemannFacultyFellowshipwasinstrumentalinhelpingProfessorAndradebuildresearchcollaborationsinBrazil,andshecontinuestocollaboratewithagroupofscholarsfromUniversidadedeSãoPaulo.Throughthiscollaboration,shehasgainedaccesstoimportantdatacollectionsonolderBrazilianadults(SABEdata),whichherBraziliancollaboratorshavebeencollectingsince2000.Havingaccesstothe2006and2010datacollectionsinBrazilhasbeenparticularlyimportant.Since2010,ProfessorAndradehasbeenusinglongitudinaldatafromSABEtoestimatetheinfluenceofhealthconditionsontotalanddisability‐freelifeexpectancies.ThespecificaimsofProfessorAndrade’sproposalweretoassesstheimpactofchronicconditionsandsocioeconomiccharacteristicsofindividualsandstatesonthewell‐beingofadultsaged60andolderinBrazilasmeasuredbydisability‐freelifeexpectancy.Since2010,sheandhercolleagueshavepublishedtwomanuscriptsinpeer‐reviewedjournals,withathirdunderreview,andtwomanuscriptsinconferenceproceedings.Fouradditionalmanuscriptsareinpreparation.Theresearchteamhaspresenteditsworkatsixinternationalandnationalconferences,andtheyhavebeeninvitedtopresentattheGerontologicalSocietyofAmericaconferenceandtheAmericanPublicHealthAssociationmeeting.ProfessorAndradehasmentoredandcollaboratedwithtwostudentsaswell.ShehasworkedwithaPh.D.studentinAnthropologytopublishtwoarticleswiththeBrazilianteamandalsowithaMasterofPublicHealthstudentworkedonapaperthathasbeensubmittedforpublication.SheiscurrentlydevelopingaworkingpaperwithaBrazilianPh.D.studentintheDepartmentofKinesiologyandCommunityHealth,aswellascollaboratingonworkwithavisitingscholarfromUSP.Asafollow‐uptothiswork,ProfessorAndradehasappliedforafellowshipintheUniversityofIllinoisCenterforAdvancedStudies.Ifselected,shewillworkwiththeBrazilianteamonfourpapers:

MERLEL.BOWENAssociateProfessorDepartmentofPoliticalScienceEconomicDevelopmentinBrazil’sQuilombosProfessorBowen’sstudyexaminestherelationshipbetweencommunallandentitlement,economicdevelopmentandgovernmentpolicyinquilombos,AfricandescentcommunitiesinruralBrazil.Thehypothesisisthatsecurepropertyrights(i.e.,theacquisitionofformallandtitles)areanecessaryconditionforstimulatingeconomicdevelopmentinquilombos.ProfessorBowenisworkingonabookmanuscriptentitled,ForLandandLiberty:BlackStrugglesinRuralBrazil,whichdrawsonextensiveethnographicresearch,interviewsandsurveys.TheLemannFacultyFellowship,combinedwithotherfunds,enabledProfessorBowentoconductfieldresearchandemploysurveyassistantsinBahiaandSãoPaulobetweenAugust2011andJanuary2012.WorkingcollaborativelywithinstitutionsinBrazil,sheimplementedthesurveysin12quilombocommunities,encompassingapproximately450familiesinthestatesofBahiaandSãoPaulo.ThegrantwasinstrumentalinhelpingherbuildresearchrelationshipsinBrazil.ThroughaBrazilianFulbrightFellowattheUniversityofIllinoiswhoisadoctoralstudentattheUniversityofSãoPauloandalecturerintheSchoolofAccountingattheFederalUniversityofBahia(UFBA),ProfessorBowenmetDr.CintiaMueller,ananthropologyprofessoratUFBAwhoidentifiedfourgraduatestudentstoassistwiththesurveys.Forthreemonths(August‐October2011),theteamworkedinsixruralcommunitiesinthedistrictofCachoeirainBahia.ProfessorBowentrainedstudentsonsurveyimplementation,completedthecommunitysurveyswithlocalleaders,oversawtheapplicationof200familyandagriculturesurveys,andinterviewedNGOpersonnelandstateofficialsworkingwithdevelopmentprojectsinthecommunities.BeforeleavingBahia,shepresentedpreliminaryfindingsatProfessorMueller’sseminaratUFBA,withtheobjectiveofdevelopingcollaborativeprojectsinthefuture.ProfessorBowenreturnedtoBrazilinJanuary2012tocompletethefieldresearchinruralSãoPaulo,collectedtheremaining250surveys,anddebriefedofficialsattheSocialEnvironmentInstitute(ISA‐SãoPaulo),aBraziliannon‐governmentalorganization,whichprovidedlogisticalsupportforherworkthroughtheirRibeiroValleyprogram.Shecontinuestoworkontheprojectprocessingandsummarizingthedataandisworkingontwoscholarlyarticlesrelatedtotheresearch.ProfessorBowen’sresearchinBrazilhasalsoenhancedherteaching.Sheisabletointegratecurrentdataintothenon‐Westernculturecoursessheteachforherdepartment’sundergraduatecurriculaaswellasintotheinterdisciplinarygraduateseminar,“GlobalAfrica.”

PAULOHENRIQUEPEREIRADEMENESESVAZPh.D.Candidate,DepartmentofEconomicsBrazil’sLong‐TermEconomicGrowth:InvestigatingthePuzzlefromaFirm‐levelPerspective MyresearchattemptstoincreaseunderstandingoffinancialdevelopmentandeconomicgrowthinBrazilbyanalyzingfirmleveldataavailableforallmanufacturingfirmwithmorethan30workersandemployees.Morespecifically,mostoftherecentliteratureineconomicgrowth,whichlinksfinancialinstitutions,firms’decisionsandaggregateproductivity,assumesthatindevelopingeconomiessmallfirmsareusuallyfinanciallyconstrained.Itisbelievedthatlimitedcreditcouldexplainthelimitedentryofproductiveentrepreneursinthesemarkets,thelackofexpenditureinR&D,andthenon‐adoptionofnewtechnologies.ResearchActivitiesInmyproject,weverifythisassumptiondirectlybyexploringachangeintheBNDESpolicythatdecreasedtheinterestratefacedbyagroupoffirmswhilekeepingtherestunderthesameregimeasbefore.Thisquasi‐experimentallowsustocheckinfairlysimplebutcrediblewayinwhatextentthisassumptionholdsinthecaseofBrazil.Nonetheless,giventhespecialconditionsofferedbythispolicychange,itmaybeusefulforothercountriesaswell.Regardingthedata,IamcurrentlynegotiatingwithaBrazilianagencythedatesandpricesrelatedtotheaccessoftherelevantdatabase,anditisexpectedtobeavailableduringthesummerof2013.Forsecuritypurposes,theconfidentialfirm‐leveldatahastobeaccessedattheirunitinRiodeJaneiro.Publications,WorkingPapers,ConferenceProceedingsandPresentationsIpresentedmyresearchinaseminarseriesattheFederalUniversityofPernambuco(UFPE)inDecember2012.Thisresultedinafutureco‐authorshipwithProf.TiagoCavalcanti,UFPEandCambridge,whoisinterestedinmodelingcounterfactualscenariostosimulatetheabsenceofthesize‐dependentpolicymentionedinmyproject.Wehavebeendebatingstrategiesthroughe‐mailandheinvitedmetovisitCambridgebytheendofJuly,2013inordertowritethefirstdraft.“Brazil’sLong‐TermEconomicGrowth:InvestigatingthePuzzlefromaFirm‐levelPerspective”i)XLEncontroNacionaldeEconomia‐ANPEC2012‐ANPEC(AssociaçãoNacionaldePós‐GraduaçãoemEconomia)ii)SeminaratUniversidadeFederaldePernambuco‐Dec.2012

Brazil Scientific Mobility Program In2011,Brazil’sgovernmentlaunchedtheBSMP,whichprovidesfundingforBraziliangraduateandundergraduatestudentstostudyinworlduniversities.TheLemannInstitutetookaleadershiproleinengagingIllinoisintheBrazilScientificMobilityProgram(formerlySciencewithoutBorders).TheInstitutestaffprovidedliaisonsamongIllinoisfaculty,administrators,andstaff,andBrazilianuniversities,governmentagencies,andfoundations.DirectorArends‐KuenningcommunicatedwithUniversityofIllinoisunitheadsandprofessorstoputtogetheralistoffacultymembersinSTEMfieldswithinterestsinBrazil.ShetraveledtoBraziltwicetomeetwithofficialsintheagenciesthatadministerBSMP,CAPESandCNPq. Lemann Brazil Leadership Scholarships   LemannBrazilLeadershipScholarshipsenableBrazilianprofessionalstoobtainaprofessionalmaster’sdegreeattheUniversityofIllinois.TheUniversityoffersseveralgraduateprogramsforpracticingprofessionals,includingprogramsdesignedforinternationalprofessionals.OnesuchprogramistheMasterofScienceinPolicyEconomics(MSPE),whichisspecificallydesignedtoenableprofessionalsingovernmentinstitutions,suchascentralbanksorfinanceministries,orinprivatecompaniestogainadditionalskillsineconomicanalysis.Morethan1,000professionalsfrom88countrieshavegraduatedfromtheMSPEprogramsinceitsfoundingin1984,andmanyofthemhaverisentoseniorexecutivepositionsinthepublicorprivatesector.Lastyear,theLemannInstitutesignedaMemorandumofUnderstandingwithProf.FirouzGahvari,headoftheMSPEandwiththeCentralBankofBraziltoformalizetheparticipationofCentralBankemployeesintheprogram.TheInstituteprovidestuitionforuptothreemid‐leveladministratorsfromtheCentralBanktopursuetwo‐yearMSPEdegreesatIllinois.TheLemannScholarshipprogramforCentralBankofBrazilemployeesbeganthisyearwiththearrivalofAndréMuellerandCamilaMaia,nowenrolledintheMSPEprogram.MuellerandMaiawillcontinuenextyear,andthreeadditionalstudents,GabrielHeqab,ClaudioCoutinho,andLuisVissoto,willjointheMSPEprograminfall2013.

Lectures and Presentations President Alexandre Tombini’s lecture took place on February 21, 2013 on campus andwasorganizedbytheLemannInstituteinapartnershipbetweentheMasterofScienceinPolicy Economics Program of the Department of Economics – Illinois and the ConsulateGeneral of Brazil in Chicago. The title of Tombini’s lecture was “Brazil: The CurrentEconomicSituation.” Tombini’s lectureoncampusattracteda largenumberof students,faculty and media and was very successful. As part of his visit to Illinois, Tombini metfacultyandBraziliangraduatestudentsoverawell‐attendedQ&A lunchat IlliniUnion.Asecond lecture by Tombini took place in Chicago on February 22, 2013 andwasmainlyorganizedby theConsulateGeneral ofBrazil inChicago inpartnershipwith theLemannInstitute, the Brazil‐US Midwest Business Council in Cooperation with the ChicagolandChamberofCommerceandtheChicagoCouncilonGlobalAffairs.

Latin American Film Festival AspartofthegoalofpromotingBraziliancultureatIllinois,theLemannInstituteco‐sponsoredagaintheLatinAmericanFilmFestivalwithCLACSinSeptember2012,bysubsidizingtheexhibitionofaBrazilianfilm,“ACadeiradoPai.”.InNovember2012,theInstitutesponsoredMostraIIIoncampus,whichwasopentothepublic.Thefilm“Xingu”wasscreenedatIllinoisHillel,andartisticdirectorCassioAmaranteattendedthescreeningandansweredquestionsfromtheaudience.Theeventwasfollowedbyareception.ThefilmwasamongthefilmsshownattheBrazilianFilmExhibitinChicago,sponsoredbythePartnersoftheAmericasandtheBrazilianConsulate.TheInstitutewillhostMostraIVagainthisfall.

BET-USA Luncheon InFebruary,theLemannInstituteorganizedalunchwith26HighSchoolEnglishTeachersfromBrazil,whowerestudyingattheIntensiveEnglishInstituteatIllinoisundertheBET‐USA–EnglishLanguageCertificateProgram.BET‐USAisacollaborationamongtheInstituteofInternationalEducation(IIE),BraziliansponsorCAPES,theFulbrightCommissioninBrazilandtheU.S.EmbassyinBrazil.TheteacherswereveryenthusiasticabouttheprogramandtheirexperiencesatIllinois,andtheeventwasveryvibrantandcheerful.TheLemannInstitutewillorganizeasimilarwelcomingeventforBrazilianteachersarrivingoncampusduringsummer2013.

Portuguese Language Program TosupportteachinginthePortugueseprogramatIllinois,theInstitutefundsaPortugueseLanguageDirectorposition.Ms.NolaSennacurrentlyholdsthisposition,andunderherleadership,enrollmentsinPortugueseclassesincreasedfrom160in2010‐11to240in2011‐12,a50percentincrease.Enrollmentsheldsteadyatabout240studentsin2012‐13.StudentswhostudyPortugueseexhibitahighlevelofsatisfactionregardingallaspectsoftheprogram,withallteachersmakingthelistofExcellentTeachers.ThissolidifiestheteachingofPortugueseatallthreelevels.Studentretentionisincreasing,allowingforthePortugueseProgramtooffertwocourses,AdvancedGrammarandPortugueseforBusiness,thatareattheintermediate/advancedlevelinFall2013.TherearenewinitiativesinthePortugueseProgram.Anewcourse,IntroductiontoBrazilianStudies,willbeofferedinFall2013.ThecoursewillbetaughtinEnglish.TogetherwithtwoIllinoisstudents,Ms.SennawillstarttheBrazilInitiative.NewwaystointeractwithBrazilianstudentswillbeexploredthroughITandstudytours.AnewRegisteredStudentOrganizationisbeinglaunched,ConsultingBrazil.Itsgoalistoprovidecultural,language,andbusinessconsultingservicestoAmericancompanieslookingtoentertheBrazilianmarketorviceversa.

Lemann Institute Staff TheInstitute’smissionissupportedbyagroupofdedicatedstaff.Dr.MaryArends‐Kuenningcontinuestoserveasdirector.InOctober2012,BrigitteGrossmanCairusjoinedtheLemannInstituteasProgramCoordinator,workingcloselywithDr.Arends‐KuenningandthestaffoftheCenterforLatinAmericanandCaribbeanStudiesCentersontheplanningandexecutionofInstituteeventsandprojects.InMarch2013,Ms.CairusalsoassumedtheroleofExecutiveDirectorofBRASA,takingoverfromDr.Arends‐Kuenning.Duetothegrowingnumberofactivitiesandprojects,theLemannInstitutehasdirectedfundstowardthesalaryforapart‐timesecretaryandtwograduateresearchassistants.Theyhandleday‐to‐dayadministrativefunctionsoftheInstitute.Inaddition,theGRAssupporttheactivitiesofBRASA.TheDeanoftheCollegeofLiberalArtsandScienceshasinitiatedtheprocessforconductingasearchforthenextdirectoroftheLemannInstituteforBrazilianStudiesattheUniversityofIllinois.TheDirectorwillbeascholar‐leaderwithexpertiserelatedtoBrazil,andmaycomefromafieldwithinorbeyondLAS(e.g.,ACES,BUS,LAW).Thesearchwillbewide‐ranging,andweanticipateidentifyinghighlyqualifiedcandidatesbothamongourownfacultyandfrominstitutionsacrossthecountry.Asearchcommitteehasbeenformed,withDr.Arends‐Kuenningservingaschair.Theformalsearchprocesswillbeginduringthefallof2013.Onarelatednote,DeanWatkinsissteppingdownfromherpositionleadingtheCollegeofLAStobecometheSeniorVicePresidentforAcademicAffairsattheUniversityofUtah.Dr.BrianRoss,professorofpsychology,hasbeenchosentoleadthecollegeasinterimdean.
