Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office Richmond County Sheriff and Warsaw Police Report Fones Cliffs continued from page A1 Warsaw Police-Chief, Joan Kent reports that on May 3, 2016 at 2:10 p.m., a tractor trailer struck a light pole in the area of Lee Avenue and Rt. 360 then fled the scene. This resulted in power outag- es in the area as well as miles of backed up traffic. Due to the damaged pole lean- ing across the highway, traffic had to be re-routed onto the East-bound lanes for several hours. Chief Kent would like to commend Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Richmond County Emergency Services, Richmond County Volunteer Fire Department, Virginia Department of Transportation, and Virginia Dominion Power for their quick response and efforts in helping to get the incident under control and the Town back to normal. We haven’t gone 15 miles this whole trip without seeing one, all the way through the Gulf of Mexico. They’ve been every- where. We thought they were our bird back in Maine.” President and CEO of the Chesapeake Conservancy, Joel Dunn, spoke to the couple about the importance of preserving Fones Cliffs and on the Conservancy’s mission. Dunn stated, “We wanted to draw in a wider audience into the Chesapeake Bay restoration movement and interest people beyond water qual- ity, which is essential, but with wildlife and history and tap into the thousands of years of history here in the Chesapeake. It makes you think; what was the bay like 400 years ago and what’s the bay like today? What do we need to do to protect this place for future generations? The Native Americans have this philoso- phy of thinking seven generations ahead. We as a society, and we as conservation- ists, are pursuing that similar sort of philosophy of thinking about how we protect this place. I have an 11-month- old daughter. I want her to be able to experience these cliffs when she’s my age. To lose them to development is a shame and we’re working real hard to protect them.” The couple is currently on their way back to their home in Maine. While in the Chesapeake area, they’ve utilized the Chesapeake Conservancy’s recently released Boater’s Guide mobile applica- tion, which contains essential interactive maps.
