Dinner and the Mystic Madness Mystery Comedy Saturday, February 13th at 6:30 pm $35 per person/$60 per couple (includes family style dinner and show) Grand Knight Joe Reardon’s Message Now that we are dealing with the middle of winter (except for those of you in the south), I hope that your spirits won’t fade into those mid-winter blues. One thing to re- member though is that with the passing of each day, the time of sunlight during the day increases, slowly inching its way towards summer. Even though it’s only a minute or so each day its still a pleasant thought to know that summer is on the way. You often hear people saying that the days are getting longer. Wouldn’t that be nice if that were actually the case. Just imagine, nice long warm summer days and short, quick to-the-point winter ones. But, this is not to be. A day is but a day, 24 hours, no matter when the sun rises or sets. The same is true with our years, even though they seem to go by faster and faster there are still only 365 days in each. There are natural laws that govern our existence; they are what give our world its structure and order. Physics is the science that deals with all of the natu- ral elements, laws and stuff (as I call it) that make-up the earth, us and for that matter the universe as a whole. Some physicists can tell us how we are made up of all these tiny atoms, put together to form ele- ments, then put together again in various combina- tions to form the stuff of life and so on and so forth. Other physicists devote their time to the heavens. They can tell us what the sun, moon, stars are made of. They know how they travel through the cosmos following the natural laws of light, speed, movement and gravity. They can even tell us how the whole ball of wax got started with the “Big Bang Theory”. It seems to me that a lot of physicists or maybe scien- tists in general try to explain away the existence of a “Superior Being”, as they like to call it. But even with all of their formulas and theories they cannot explain away that something or someone had to start the process. Call it the “Big Bang Theory” if you like, but still, someone had to light the match. Anthropology is another one of the sciences that seems to try an discount the intervention or existence of a “Superior Being”. Scientists can trace the evolu- tion of “man”, or what they call “man” as far back as 4.5 to 5 million years ago. It’s amazing, but they seem to know how these pre-humans lived, what they ate and how they wandered throughout the world. Much like the “Big Bang Theory” that the physicist deals with, the anthropologist has to deal with what is known as the “Missing Link”. That is, the jump from “pre-historic man” to “homo sapiens” (that’s us). Evolution seems to be moving along quite nicely then all of a sudden we appear. I wonder why it is that they can go back 5 million years through evolutionary his- tory but can’t find the link that ties us to that history? Maybe, just maybe, something happened, you think? Questions in their own circles have even arisen as to the validity of the evolution theory itself. The Donne GalsThe first meeting of 2010 is onThursday, February 18th. The time

of our monthly meeting has

changed to: 7:00 pm. Dinner, asusual, is at 6:00 pm.

We will be planning a St.Patrick’s Day fundraiser. Volunteersare needed for the 50/50 raffle onces month on Friday evenings.

These activities allow us to do-nate generously to many charities. We need every member to helpmake them successful. We hope tosee all of you in 2010.

Respectfully submitted,Jean Carrier, Secretary

PGK Norm and Peggy VanRiper

proudly let us know of the birth of theirgranddaughter Mia. Mia is the daugh-

ter of Steve and Mackenzie VanRiper and was greetedinto the family on Dec 5. Norm, now the grandfather offour, also wants us to know that there are plenty of pho-tos available to all those who inquire.

Member Mike and Bridget Rouhan informed us thattheir daughter Erin, an MSU grad, has completed herinternship at Beaumont Hospital. Dr. Rouhan now hangsher shingle at the U of M Hospital, starting in January2010.

Brother Knight Jim and Kathie O’Connor want usall to know how proud they are of son Mike as he justgraduated with honors, from Madonna University. Mikecompleted this feat in just FOUR years. Let’s see: Mikeattended St Robert grade school, Divine Child HighSchool and now Madonna University: yep, Catholic ed-ucation is a good investment.

Ever wonder whatever happened to Wrong Way Cor-rigan? Well, we think we found him driving the bus thattook 30 of us to the UD vs UM basketball game on Dec.13. That aside, Brother Knight Dave Diponio outdidhimself in providing a real fun outing. Bus, game ticket, refreshments, pizza and salad, all for only $22. It can’tget any better than that! Word has it that another tripmay be in the works. Keep an eye on your email.

Gotta’ let you in on something. In December, aBrother Knight was kind enough to hold a “Gold Buy”at our Council. Sure he made some money but better yet,our members were paid a fair and honest price for theirold gold. A lot of us emptied old jewelry boxes and ridourselves of gold and silver we haven’t worn in years. And, we didn’t hear any complaints of the prices paid. So, we are thinking of doing this again later this year.We can use this as a great Council fundraiser: The Coun-cil gets an agreed upon fee from the BUYERS stake, notthe sellers gain. It is a win-win proposition for Mon-aghan members. So start thinking of pocketing someeasy money.

And a Tip OÊ the Hat toStudents at St. Michael Schooland Dorothy Kenney andthe Christmas Party crew

Some young kids showed a great deal of tenacity at ourrecent Christmas party. Spurred on by the need to helpothers, these girls signed on to help their school raisefunds for the needy. The girls spent much of the timecollecting recyclable articles to add to the pile they hadpreviously been busy collecting for a school program atSt Mike’s of Livonia. The recycled objects are then(continued on page four)

DUES are DUEJust a friendly reminder. Council duesnotices were sent out in November2009 and many members have not yetpaid them. Please remit your dues assoon as possible so that the Councilcan continue to operate and functionas the “Friendly Family Council”.

Pray for Peace

GRAND KNIGHT (continued from page one)Medical science maybe the most important of

the sciences because of the way that it affects us.Other sciences can try to explain our creation anddevelopment over the centuries but medical sci-ence affects us now, in real time. All it takes is tolook around, we all know of friends or relativeswho have benefitted from the research into can-cer, heart disease and even the common cold. There are things though that sometimes, to me,can be a little troubling and that is the way somescientists are trying to play around with the struc-ture of life itself. The restructuring of our genes ina quest to develop the perfect human, cloning andother like experiments are not trying to discounta “Superior Being” but more like trying to act likea “Superior Being”. But, just like the other sci-ences there is one thing that eludes them though,is the creation of life itself. To alter life is onething but to create life is a whole different matter. No matter how they try and alter our lives theycannot create it and what is sad is how easily thedestruction of it is carried out for the sake of sci-ence. We all know the story of “The Holy Inno-cents”, those children murdered in Herod’s pursuitof Jesus, well; maybe we have to deal with ourown “Holy Innocents” these days, but this time atthe hands and knives of scientists and abortion-ists. Our faith tells us that God created life andthrough the research of science, at least to me, itseems to point that way. So maybe with our hopeand our prayers and the power of our votes we canwork to see that soon the destruction of it willcome to an end.

Vivat Jesus

Let’s take a stroll down “Memory Lane” and visitthe “Old Clubhouse” on Lesure and Grand Riverand see what our Knights and their families weredoing that winter, 39 years ago.

Our District Deputy was P.G.K. James J.

Earl A. McIntyre, Euchre Chairman and hisgang of players went over to Chatham Council byD.S.R bus to retrieve the famous Euchre Trophy onSunday, February 21st. Brother Ray W. Papke wasthe bus driver. If those players could only join ourMonday night Euchre players who average about14 to 17 tables per evening; they would be in theirglory.

Around the Council (continued from page 2)turned into cash as a class project. The familiesof Lexi Morris (daughter of Brother Knight Ed

Morris), Brianne Rogers (daughter of BrotherKnight Kevin Rogers), Megan Aregenta andAbbigale Laurentius should all be proud ofthese young ladies.

Speaking of the Children’s Christmas Party, the Council owes a great debt of gratitude toDorothy Kenney who stepped forward whenothers would not. Dorothy didn’t hesitate to takeover the party when she found out that NOMEMBER would take the time to organize theyearly party. It didn’t seem proper at the timethat of our 1,000 or so members, not a singleman would chair this event. But as the party un-folded, we were sure lucky to have DorothyKenney shoulder that responsibility. Dorothyand her Santa helpers, Mary DiPonio, Barb andBob Percha, Kay and Pat Casey and DGK Jim

Inch prepared the event that hosted well over150 kids and families..

So many members ask “How can I get in-volved, I want to help out”. Let’s hope that nextyear that is not just giving lip service to the manyongoing projects we have. If you are interestedin a project that we don’t offer, bring it up, chairit and we will do it.

Lenten ObservancesLent is the season which runs from Ash Wednes-day until the Mass of the Lord's Supper exclusive.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days oftotal fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent aredays of abstinence.

In keeping with the spirit and meaning of theLenten fast, Catholics are encouraged to observethe Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday anduntil the celebration of the Easter Vigil.

The law of fasting binds persons from the com-pletion of their 18th year to the beginning of their60th year, i.e., from the day after their 18th birth-day to the day after their 59th birthday.

The law of fasting allows only one full meal aday, but does not prohibit taking some food in themorning and evening, observing as far as quantityand quality are concerned, approved local custom. The order of meals is optional; i.e., the full mealmay be taken in the evening instead of at midday. Also: 1) The quantity of food taken at the two

lighter meals should not exceed the quantity takenat the full meal; 2) The drinking of ordinary liq-uids does not break the fast.

The law of abstinence binds persons from thecompletion of their 14th year, i.e., from the dayafter their 14th birthday throughout life.

The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat.It does not forbid the use of eggs, the products ofmilk or condiments made of animal fat. Also per-missible are soups flavored with meat, meat gravyand sauces.

Ash WednesdayThe season of Lent begins with the ancient prac-tice of marking the baptized with ashes as a pub-lic and communal sign of penance. The blessingand distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday nor-mally takes place during the celebration of Mass. However, when circumstances require, the bless-ing and distribution of ashes may take place apartfrom Mass, during a celebration of the Word ofGod.

This order may also be used when ashes arebrought to the sick. According to circumstances, the rite may be abbreviated by the minister. Nev-ertheless, at least one Scripture reading should beincluded in the service.

If already blessed ashes are brought to the sick, the blessing is omitted and the distribution takesplace immediately after the homily. The homilyshould conclude by inviting the sick person to pre-pare himself or herself for the reception of theashes.

This rite may be celebrated by a priest or dea-con who may be assisted by law ministers in thedistribution of the ashes. The blessing of theashes, however, is reserved to a priest or deacon.A further reminder: please note the penitential riteand the Gloria are omitted on Ash Wednesday.
