Hello Everyone, On Sunday 17th November the Lions Club of Leopold participated in “Lap The Map” for Diabetes Awareness. The main activity of the day was a walk around the Leopold Main Oval with the target aim of 11 laps equalling 5 km distance walk for adults. Children were also encouraged to participate and a Certificate of Achievement was issued to all participants on the day for completing the walk and documenting the number of laps achieved. My certificate hangs proudly in my kitchen. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants who took part, helping to make this such an enjoyable day. Lion members had a BBQ set up for sausages in bread and water was provided by means of water fountains. We were fortunate to have Diabetes Educators from the Kensington Hill Medical Centre who were on hand to answer any questions regarding diabetes. With the help of the Leopold community we managed to walk 875 laps or 397 kilometres, which is the distance from Leopold to Albury/Wodonga. This distance will be added to those of other Australian Lions clubs to’ Lap the Map’ of our country. Raffle tickets were on sale and the raffle drawn at two pm. Winners were notified so they could pick up their prizes. I would like to acknowledge the Sponsors for Lap the Map and thank them for their donations of raffle prizes. The Sponsors included Annette Pfarrer, Bakers Delight - Leopold Plaza, Bulbs Direct, Dental Spa.com, Direct Chemist Outlet – Leopold Plaza, GMHBA Leopold, K-Mart Leopold, Ollies Coffee Lounge – Leopold Plaza, Pacific Smiles – Leopold Plaza, Salon Red Hairdresser – Leopold, Shore Break phone repairs - Leopold Plaza. I would also like to thank the Water Board for the use of their trailer with water fountains, the Leopold Primary School for all their great support for this project, and Queenscliff/Pt Lonsdale Lions club and Rose Booth for their donations. Last but not least, I would like to thank Lion Mary Suhr for co-ordinating the Lap the Map project. It was no small feat and really well organised. Thankyou Mary. Also a big thankyou to Lions members for their contribution and help on the day. A few weeks ago, I drove to Hamilton to be with my sister who was undergoing major surgery. I drove there on my own and did not know a soul there. I want to say that I was treated with such kindness by people there. The lady running the caravan park where I stayed, helping me with directions to shops, to the hospital. The very kind hospital staff at Hamilton Base Hospital who stopped to help me when I lost my way. I was a stranger, lost and worried for my sister. Their support made all the difference and I will always remember their kindness to me. I speak about this because Christmas is coming up, a time for giving. Gifts don’t always amount to money, even though we enjoy the giving. It can be caring gestures to our family or to strangers. Merry Christmas to you all. May you all enjoy the spirit of Christmas with family and friends.

Ute Farago President.

LEOPOLD RED CROSS

BE PREPARED

This Scout/Guide motto applies to everyone this Summer. You’ve seen the devastation that fires have caused in other states so far this season, now Victoria is in the firing line. Living in town won’t exempt you from a raging fire, and brick houses do burn. Have your evacuation plan worked out and ready to put into action. Have a ready- to- go bag with essentials - phone,

documents, cards, ID, insurance papers medication a change of clothes and know which

treasures you’ll take with you. Kid’s should have their own bags - special toys, games and clothes. And don’t forget your pets.

If you are going on holidays check out alternative escape routes from your destination. The road you arrived on may not be the one on which you leave. Tis is all a bit doom and gloom, but it may save your life. Here endeth the lecture!

Red Cross people are at the interstate and Vic evacuation centres doing their TLC meet and greet and registering the evacuees. They’ll be in those areas for many weeks doing follow up welfare checks.

DONATIONS to RC can be made at any Aussie Post shop, online at redcross.org.au, by phone to 1800733276, or cash/cheque through our unit.

DONATIONS to the Salvos disaster appeal can be made at any Woolworths supermarket.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

No rain, no wind, not to hot not to cold - ordered especially by Keith for the occasion. As always he and his crew and the Lions catering mob did a great job. Our unit laid a wreath, remembering not only those who served, but also the start of our Red Cross in 1915.

RITA HAMMOND

A collection of Rita’s personal RC history has been given to our unit. We’ll see it eventually go to the RC archives for safe keeping after we’ve all had a browse. There are photos, invitations, letters , awards, medals and newspaper clippings, all covering the years Rita was in the Leopold Service Company, then our branch cum unit, and also her years as Commandant of the Geelong and Barwon Region. It’s all very interesting memorabilia.

An extra $50 came in for our picture night, bringing the total to $664.60, our best ever effort. And the Christmas catalogue sales were also our best effort, with just under $1000. Thanks to all who joined the buyers ranks.

Don’t forget to save your stamps over Christmas. They have been a constant fundraiser for RC over the years but are now becoming a bit like hen’s teeth.

LEOPOLD WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE Inc.

Big thank you to all who attended the 2019 Remembrance Day service held at the Leopold War Memorial. We gave a special welcome to the number of veterans who were in attendance, Councillor Trent Sullivan represented the City of Greater Geelong and apologies were received from Councillor Jim Mason, Lisa Neville MLA and Senator Sarah Henderson. We also welcomed students from Leopold Primary School, who participated in the service. Our special guest was Lieutenant Nick Arundell who delivered an emotional Remembrance Day address. Members of the committee, Pam and Bryan are compiling a list of those from the Leopold district who enlisted in WW2. To date 206 people have been identified of whom 10 did not return home. Pam and Bryan are researching as much detail as possible with the aim to produce a book to have a lasting record of the bravery of these local heroes who went away and fought for our freedoms and liberties. We are appealing to members of the community for any information about locals who enlisted and may wish for those details to be included in the book to contact the committee through the email address listed at the bottom of this page. Plans are progressing for the stage two shelter project at the memorial, soil tests have been taken, applications for necessary permits are being processed and funding arrangements are almost complete. The month of December marks the anniversary of three local heroes killed in action in World War One; * Reginald William BRINSMEAD was a farmer born in Leopold. Reginald was awarded the Military Cross for ‘conspicuous gallantry and devotion when he took over leadership of his company when the commander became a casualty’. On 17th December 1917 Reginald was killed in action and is listed on the Menin Gate memorial, Reginald was 24 years old when he died. Reginald is recorded as one of the men who served 1000 days of continued service with the AIF * Herbert Oswald ASH was born in Leopold and worked as a gardener, Herbert was a member of the Leopold Rifle Club and the Leopold Free Library he played the violin at the Leopold Methodist Church meetings and many local functions, he took the violin away to war with him. Despite many attempts to have the violin returned to Herbert’s family after the war it never returned home. Herbert died of influenza on 18th December 1918 aged 26 years and lies buried in France. * Robert Leslie WARREN was born at Bellarine and attended the Moolap State School, Robert later worked at the salt works. Sadly we have been unable to find a lot of information about Roberts’ service, he enlisted in April 1915 aged 22 years and returned in September 1917 , ‘medically unfit’. We know he died in St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1919 aged 25 years. (one of many sad stories from war) The memory and sacrifice of these and other local heroes killed in World War One are honoured by the brass disks embedded in the memorial walk at the Leopold War Memorial We are extremely grateful to the members of the Lions Club of Leopold for their assistance and ongoing support to the Leopold War Memorial Committee.

We will Remember them. Lest We Forget.

COUNCILLOR JIM MASON

Hello, my name is Jim Mason AM and I’m a proud Bellarine ward councillor at the City of Greater Geelong. My fellow Bellarine councillors are Mayor Stephanie Asher and Trent Sullivan, and we’ll be taking turns to write a regular column for the Leopold Local. It will be a great opportunity for us to connect with the Leopold community. I hope this column will also generate interest for community members to form a representative group that can engage with the Combined Bellarine Community Associations. We often meet with representative community groups in other Bellarine towns so I look forward to meeting a representative Leopold group. I thought I’d let you know about some of council’s 2019-20 community grants that have been allocated to Leopold organisations.

• Leopold Kindergarten is one of them, receiving nearly $6,000 to rejuvenate its back garden play areas with sustainable materials. • Council’s also set aside $6,000 for the Heywood Men’s Talk Group, which will team up

with the Bank of Melbourne Foundation to run "Healthy Men, Healthy Communities: On the Low Down" events in Leopold and Corio.

Both events will promote the value of emotional expression and mental health techniques to at-risk men. And finally, I’m really excited that the unnamed Leopold reserve at 97 Christies Road has been officially named Fred Cook Reserve, after the late Fred Cook OAM. Fred was recognised because of his tireless efforts as a member of the Friends of the Bellarine Rail Trail. His widow Carolyn, children, grandchildren and friends joined Cr Sullivan to unveil the new signage. The Bellarine Rail Trail is better off thanks to Fred.

A message from your local Anglican parish….

’t it? There are tables groaning with food, houses lavishly decorated with lights, music blaring from shops and piles of presents under trees.

Here in the Bellarine Gateway Anglican Parish, we want to be part of

who simply don’t have the resources to even put a modest meal on the table. The parish invites all residents of Leopold, not just the church goers, to place non-perishable food items under our Christmas tree in church,

church hall. All food collected will go to the food bank at St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Corio. Don’

cereals, tea or coffee would be gratefully received.

Have a safe, relaxed and blessed Christmas with the people that you love.

God bless you today! - Rev Elizabeth Breakey PS check out our services on the cover.

LEOPOLD MEN’S SHED

Well the year is almost over and it has been a very successful year for us at the shed. We have completed projects and been involved in many community endeav-ors’ and enjoyed our time at the shed in each other’s company. We have had quite a few new members join us this year and new friendships and interests are devel-oping. It is with sadness to say 4 of our mates have passed in 2019 and their names added to our Down Tools board

The shed will be involved in the Bunning’s Community day on the 5th of December 2019 so come along and grab a sausage in bread and join in the fun.

Thank you to everyone for coming along, donating and supporting our Garage Sale which was held at our shed on Sat 23rd November 2019.

It was great to see the crosses we enjoyed making being displayed at the Leopold memorial on Remembrance Day. What a big Statement they made as they stood side by side in the lawn area.

2019 is fast drawing to a close and we will gather with our partners for a Christmas celebration lunch at Club Italia as we round off the year. I would like to take this op-portunity to thank our sponsors and friends of the shed for their much appreciated donations and help.

We wish a Merry Christmas to all.

Cheers Ian MacLeod

LEOPOLD PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSPAPER 2020 PREP VISIT

On Thursday 21st November 2019, our future preps spent the morning in their new school and visited their new classrooms for their future learning. There was an information session held in

the new Bellarine Building for the parents of the 2020 preps. Mandy, the Manager of Out of School Hours Care, explained to parents about care for their children after school hours. Tracey spoke about uniforms, booklists, the introduction of our Nude Food program for 2020, medications and our new Compass system. Our Principal Stuart Bott welcomed everyone to Leopold Primary and thanked the parents for choosing Leopold Primary School to educate their children. He also spoke about our school values and the plans we have for the future. The parents then stayed behind and had a cuppa and a scone before they picked their children up to go home. The 2020 preps had a great time at their new school.

TOUGHCOLOUR 2019

On Friday 6th December, we will be hosting our annual 2019 Tough Colour Run. It will include coloured powder, obstacles and many more fun activities for the children to enjoy. We will be collecting donations on the Go Fund Me Page, Tough

Colour, 2019. Our target is $10,000 for the new multipurpose goals for the new oval. We would love to improve our school with these extra funds. Please visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/tough-colour-2019 to donate.

LEOPOLD COMMUNITY BANK DONATION

On Thursday 14th November, our four school leaders went to the Leopold Sportsman’s Club to accept a grant of $25 000. The Leopold Bendigo Community Bank kindly donated this money. The money will be going towards a new playground, as we had to demolish the junior playground to make way for the new Bellarine Building. Once again, we thank Bendigo Leopold Community Bank for finding our “The More You Know, The More You Grow” submission successful.

2020 SCHOOL LEADERS

Leopold Primary School have selected the 2020 school leaders. We had 44 students run for school leader who gave a speech to their peers. Their peers then selected nine students to move on to the interview stage. After a long and hard decision, we selected the five students to take the role of school leader. Our 2020 school leaders are Miley Troop, Lily Keyburn, Nikita Melnyk, Riley Peters and Archie Wall.

LISA NEVILLE MP Remembrance Day 2019

On Monday the 11th of November right across the Bellarine fitting Remembrance Day Services were held in honour of those men and women who served our country in time of war, thousands of who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Of course as local MP it is impossible to attend every service, so this year I attended the Portarlington service, while I was represented at Leopold by a staff member, who laid a wreath on my behalf.

It is pleasing to learn that the Leopold service was, as usual, well attended by many locals. Importantly the Leopold Primary School was represented by their Grade 6ers, with four students taking part in the ceremony.

I take this opportunity to congratulate the Leopold War Memorial Committee, led by Keith Pettigrew, on their work in organising such a fitting service and all those who took part.

Towns like Leopold are extremely lucky to have many voluntary organisations doing great work throughout the community and the Leopold War Memorial Committee is one great example.

Their hard work and commitment over many years in establishing the War Memorial that opened in 2017 and their ongoing maintenance of it is to be commended.

Every morning the flags are raised at the Memorial and at evening they are lowered by a member of the committee, without fail.

My congratulations and thanks to the Leopold War Memorial Committee.

Vic Health Sport Club Grants Now Open.

For local sporting clubs it is important to note that a new round of Vic Health Sporting Club grants have just opened and close on 24 Febru-ary 2020.

This year the grants are focussed on providing funding of $3,000 and up to $10,000 to sporting clubs looking create more opportunities for women and girls or modified sport options.

In addition, clubs applying for a grant can indicate in their application if they would like to be considered for an additional $2000 grant to promote “This Girl Can –Victoria” to encourage women in the community to get active.

The State Government is wanting to help more of our community become involved with sport, encouraging people to get active and embrac-ing a healthy life style regardless of their age, gender or ability.

The grants can help cover the costs of supporting new teams or clubs or provide assistance in the cost of uniforms, coaching staff and equip-ment.

I encourage all our hard working clubs in Leopold to take this opportunity to apply for a grant , especially those clubs looking to deliver new or extra opportunities to get people more active in sport.

Shade Sail grant for Leopold Primary

Through the State Government School Shades Grants program, I am pleased to report that the Leopold Primary School has received $25,000 for the installation of a shade sail.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer later in life. Proper shade can reduce overall exposure to UV by up to 75 per cent when used in conjunction with other sun protection measures such as sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and protective clothing.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly.

So… what is Christmas all about?

Some thoughts from people in our Leopold community ....

“I think about children in all parts of the world who need to be loved.”

“It is a celebration of the birth of Jesus.”

“Sometimes I am overwhelmed by the busy – ness – and that’s a bit of a pain!”

“Why do you feel you have to have your windows clean for December 25th?”

“For us it has always been a happy family day, but I know that is not so for everyone. It can be a time when hurts and arguments surface. It can be a lonely time for some. This is very sad, but unfortu-nately, it is very real.”

“I know people who actually dread Christmas.”

“This Christmas, instead of thinking of ourselves and our loved ones, give a thought to the people who are struggling to make ends meet. Children living in poverty. The people who have died, and those who have lost their homes, in the bushfires. Donate, rather than give gifts to your family.”

“This Christmas I am giving cotton, washable vegie bags to family and friends.”

“Christmas is about looking after what God has made. It is about nurturing, not just babies, but also the earth.”

“Christmas is about stories. Stories of God, in the birth of Jesus; family stories; Australian summer stories; ... all our different stories.”

“I like to remember what the word means ... Christ mas ...the birth of Christ.”

So…what is Christmas all about for you?

Plant Sale News

The Plant and Garden Sale in November was a great success with many people from our

community joining in the fun. Thank you to Estia for their great craft stall; Leopold Lions for

running the BBQ; Capra Coffee (yes for coffee!); Diaco’s Nursery for potting mix and to all the folk who dropped in pots and plants at the Op Shop, during the year.

Several boxes of “leftovers” found their way to the Tonimbuk Fire Relief Centre the following

weekend and were given to families whose gardens were destroyed in the March bushfires. Alison Williams (from Clifton Springs Garden Club/ Toyota Landcruiser Club of Victoria) wrote a thankyou saying , “Your plants won’t just be brightening their gardens, they’re more like a big hug to brighten their lives.”.

Research in recent years has shown that playing video games with the family has many positive effects on adolescent development and long-term family outcomes, amongst other things. As such, Gaming in Good Company aims to inform parents and grandparents of video games they can play with children so

that everyone can have a good time and develop strong connections.

Cuphead: Don’t Deal With The Devil

How many players? Up to 2 What console(s) is it available on? Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

Games come in all sorts of genres and play styles, some more frequently than others as most of us know by how Call of Duty and Fortnite get their fair share of duplicates (and spinoffs, in the former’s case). That said, however repetitive a concept gets, stylish presentation can make a game worth playing in its own right. The run-and-gun genre is quite old but Cuphead brilliantly gives it an astounding revitalisation.

The gameplay’s quite typical of run-and-gunners: you run, gun, jump, die, and live so you can die later than before. Where Cuphead stands out is in its aesthetic; it faithfully emulates the thematic tones and rubber hose animation of classic cartoons like Felix the Cat and others by Max and David Fleischer in such depth that the game feels like an all new experience as a classic cartoon that you can actually play.

So many elements go towards this that listing them all would spoil the fun but, just as a taste, Cuphead and Mugman attack with magic finger guns and the nineteen boss fights—each one unique in how they play out—have individualised intertitles introducing them like an episode, many phases in their fights, and quips to shower you with upon defeating you, which will be often because the game is brutally hard. Get a second player to help out. Not only is a problem shared a problem halved but this is something everyone ought to see for the sheer spectacle alone.
