Birthplace of a New Profession For those who wish to use the power of creativity to positively transform individuals and

communities, the Expressive Therapies Division at Lesley University offers the knowledge

and skills to reach that goal. Highly evolved and unique in its concept, our pace-setting

programs provide a meaningful connection between the arts, theory, and practice in

clinical training. As one of the most recognized Expressive Therapies programs in the world,

employers look to Lesley as a resource for expertly trained and qualified providers of mental

health services.

Experience our unique, multi-modality approach. One of the distinguishing features of Lesley’s Expressive Therapies program is our commitment

to exposing students to multiple arts modalities. Because we believe an understanding of all

the arts in psychotherapy enriches all expressive therapists, we integrate visual arts, dance,

drama, poetry, literature, and music into our core curriculum. Graduates are well prepared

to utilize an integrated arts approach in their clinical work and collaborate with other mental

health professionals.

Take advantage of extraordinary faculty resources. When the Expressive Therapies program was established in 1975, it was one of the first

graduate programs in the country to train professionals in this emerging, creative, and vital

field. More than 35 years later, the program continues to push the boundaries of expressive

therapies knowledge and training. Our extraordinary faculty of artist-practitioner-scholars helps

students to develop their identities as artists and clinical mental health providers.

Meet the requirements for licensure, accreditation, and certification. The goal of the Expressive Therapies Program is to give students the knowledge, skills, and

experience needed to practice in a range of professional settings, including health care

facilities, schools, community agencies, and private practices. The Expressive Therapies 60-credit

programs are designed to meet the academic and field training requirements for mental health

counselor licensure in Massachusetts (students intending to work outside of Massachusetts

should review their state’s regulations to determine their eligibility for licensure). Our

specialization tracks prepare graduates for certification by national professional associations.

Field Experience Lesley University is committed to active learning, scholarly research,

critical inquiry, and diverse forms of artistic practice through

mentoring relationships among students, faculty, and practitioners

in the field. The Division of Expressive Therapies provides a

comprehensive internship program designed to help Master’s degree

students gain practical experience and launch successful careers in

their fields of choice.

Where can I conduct my fieldwork? The Field Training Office works closely with students,

placement sites, and instructors to facilitate each student’s

learning experience. Placement sites include but are not

limited to psychiatric hospitals, community mental health

centers, adult day-treatment programs, geriatric centers, and

schools, as well as clinics that provide treatment for families,

substance abuse issues, and children with special needs.

Who will provide support during my training? In addition to being supervised by expressive therapists,

students generally work with multidisciplinary teams and

receive supervision from licensed psychiatrists, psychologists,

social workers, mental health counselors, and other mental

health professionals. A small-group seminar accompanies all

field-training experiences to provide additional supervision

and support.

How many hours are required? The Expressive Therapies Master’s degree programs require

students to complete a set number of internship hours each

academic year. The 48-credit program requires 600 total hours

of field experience, while the 60-credit programs require

between 1,050 and 1,225 total hours of field experience.

Please refer to the programs of study for details.

LESLEY UNIVERSITY

Faculty: Shaun McNiff

Position: University Professor, Lesley University

“One of the things I enjoy most about Lesley is that we strive to provide, and also encourage students to seek, the broadest diversity of experiences possible,” says McNiff. “Those experiences are what give each of us our own unique voice and vision, and the more experiences we have, the more authoritative that voice and vision become.”

Professor McNiff’s own creative vision led him to establish—at Lesley University—the world’s first graduate program focused on the integration of the arts and therapy. The professional field of expressive arts therapy grew from McNiff’s work, and he is now an internationally recognized figure in the areas of arts and healing.

At Lesley, McNiff currently teaches an arts-based research workshop for doctoral candidates and also teaches studio-based courses to undergraduate and graduate students that explore ways in which the expressive arts therapy process can be best known and enhanced through art making. McNiff observes,

“Our graduates all have one very powerful thing in common: the confidence of experience.”

Alumnus: Adam Riccio, ‘10

Position: Expressive Therapist and Mental Health Counselor, Children’s Hospital Boston

Adam was working as an actor when he discovered that a degree in Expressive Therapies would be the perfect way to launch a career focused on creativity and counseling. Just two years after starting the program, Adam translated his final internship into a paid position in the Department of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he co-leads group programming for youth ages 8-18. “Our sessions provide a supportive community where we explore treatment through creativity,” explains Adam. One new group is Adam’s weekly drum circle. “In this setting, kids are welcome to be loud—to express themselves without talking. Some patients are responding quite well.”

Adam is confident that graduates of Lesley’s Expressive Therapies programs have the skills and experience necessary for a competitive job market. “Expressive therapists bring new perspectives to the field of mental health. Lesley’s focus on intermodal therapies and group supervision helped me become an adaptable, strategic professional. ”

Alumnus: Jason Cruz, ‘97

Position: Clinical Supervisor, RAW Art Works

“The key word in ‘art therapy’ is ART, so go make some!” says Jason. “Get your students, clients, communities to get out and make art, not just talk about it. Healing is the process of making, of being creative.”

Jason’s expert advice is born from his experience at RAW Art Works, an organization that uses the power of the arts to inspire underserved youth to tell their stories, envision new possibilities, and transform their lives. Jason describes RAW as a place where he and his colleagues use art to help young people “stop, think and resolve.”

As the Clinical Supervisor, Jason provides support to all staff members on clinical issues that arise in their work and also plays a major role in program development. “I feel like this field chose me,” says Jason. “Like I was hand-picked to help folks listen to themselves, start to understand why things happen or don’t happen, and then, when they’re ready, take action.”

Alumna: Aditi Subramaniam, ‘10

Position: Early Intervention Specialist, Children’s Hospital, Boston

Aditi was working in India as a psychologist when she decided to enroll in Lesley’s Expressive Therapies program. “I am trained as a classical Indian dancer, and wanted to bring together my passions for psychology and dance,” she recalls. “Lesley allowed me to explore expressive therapies and clinical psychotherapy together in one program and offered a platform for integrating movement, music, visual art, and drama therapies into the clinical realm of psychotherapy.”

As a clinical mental health counselor and dance movement psychotherapist, Aditi is now working in Early Intervention at Children’s Hospital, Boston. She works with families and children ages 0-3, visiting clients in their homes and leading developmental play groups at the Hospital.

“Studies at Lesley trained me to become a well-rounded clinician and helped me focus on the role of the therapist as an advocate,” says Aditi. “Supporting child-caregiver relationships and interacting with families as they move through each wave of development is extremely rewarding!”
