Local Femme-Friendly Gatherings
ProblemIn San Francisco, there is currently no online or physical community for women to get together and discuss the issues surrounding gender inequality and women’s rights. As someone who is newly a “feminist” and motivated to make change, it would be great to have a welcoming and trustworthy guide to getting involved with events happening in my own backyard. ere are so many interesting things happening here, but they are all independently promoted and scattered. We need a space that these all can be displayed together and easily accessible in a well-designed way.
ObjectiveProvide a calendar of events online for feminists to connect and get involved in the SF community to create positive change towards gender equality. It will present these events in a friendly, smart, & lighthearted tone to encourage people to attend these events and learn more about issues they care about– beyond the screen. While staying informed about these issues and admiring women who are paving the way is empowering, getting involved and engaging in a dialogue is so much more impactful.
ere is room for this idea to grow and include original content submitted by users, a chance to host our own events and meetups, and promote local charities whose missions are central to empowering women.
Target Audience Hip, young women in the workforce who would like to feel empowered and mingle amonst strong women that they aspire to be. Women who would like to speak of the female experience loud and proud and nd comfort in that with their peers. Also welcome to supporters of gender equality who would like to take a step forward and get involved in local community events. Welcome to men and women of any career path. Girl gangs encouraged!
CompetitionEvent platforms: Facebook, Eventbrite, Meetup groups for Women in Technology (e.g. Women Who Code SF)

Women make up less than 30% of the computing workforce and about 1.5% of contributions to open source projects. This is something that is important for both men and women alike to become aware of and to address. This workshop will focus on this gender gap and introduce you to people who are passionate about this issue. There will be a panel which will be made up individuals who come from various backgrounds and who dedicate their time, heart, and talent to making a tangible impact in their field and who believe in seeing more diversity in their field. The panel will tell you why they are passionate about seeing this gender gap addressed and what they believe the future of technology should look like.

“Women in the Bay Area are paid 84 cents for every dollar paid to men, a yearly gap of nearly $10,000 between men and women who work full-time.” Let’s bridge that gap.
