Lesson 10 ELABORATE2 Day 3

Insects live in many kinds of habitats. Habitats helps animals meet their needs.

• How is the classroom butterfly habitat like a natural butterfly habitat outdoors? How is it different?

• How does an insect’s habitat help it meet its needs?

• In a habitat, why are there so many insects compared to other animals?

Lesson 10 ELABORATE4 Day 3Insects defend themselves from other animals.

Each kind of insect has unique body parts to help it survive. Some insects may hide or even escape to survive.

The way an insect moves and the food an insect eats depend on its body parts.

For example, adult butterflies have wings to help it move by flying. But a butterfly that is not grown, in the larva stage, has legs to crawl.

sections3. antenna4. exoskeleton5. mouth parts6. wings (optional)

Student shows some understanding of insect characteristics by including most of these features:1. exactly 6 legs 2. 3 distinct body

sections3. antenna4. exoskeleton5. mouth parts6. wings (optional)

Student shows limited understanding of insect characteristics by including 3 or less of these features:1. exactly 6 legs 2. 3 distinct body

Student shows no understanding of insect characteristics by not including any of these features:1. exactly 6 legs 2. 3 distinct body

sections3. antenna4. exoskeleton5. mouth parts6. wings (optional)

Description:The insect description should include complete and thoughtful information.

Student shows understanding of how an insect meets its basic needs by thoughtfully planning, designing and describing their model to include appropriate ways insects survive.

Student shows some understanding of how an insect meets its basic needs by planning, designing and describing their model, but have some incomplete or inaccurate information.

Student shows limited understanding of how an insect meets its basic needs by planning, designing and describing their model with incomplete, incorrect or unclear information about its survival.

Student shows no understanding of how an insect meets its basic needs by not attempting to plan, design and describe their model to include appropriate ways insects survive.

Lesson 10 ELABORATE6 Day 3Insect Model Description: Complete the information about your insect and how it survives.

Draw your insect to plan your model. Include all of the insect characteristics in your design.

This insect is called:

1. What kind of environment is home to your insect?

2. Is your insect helpful or harmful to the environment? How?

3. What does your insect eat?

4. How does its mouth part help it to get food?

5. What animals would eat your insect?

6. How would your insect defend itself?

7. What special body parts does your insect have?

8. What special behaviors does your insect use to survive?
