Equations

• An EQUATION is a statement formed by placing an equal “=“ sign between two expressions.

• An equations has a left and a right side.

• EX: 4x + 1 = 9

Solving Equations

• Finding all the solutions of an equation is called SOLVING the equations.

• Some are easy enough to be solved using Mental Math.

Solutions

• When the variable in an equation is replaced by a number, the resulting statement is either true or false. If the statement is true, the number is a SOLUTION of the equation.

• EX: 4x + 1 = 9

“2” is the solution to this problem.

Guided Practice Problems• Solve the following:

2x=10

4=x – 3

2 + x = 6

X = 13

Inequality

• An Inequality is a statement formed by placing an inequality symbol, such as “<“ or “>” between two expressions.

< is less than

< is less than or equal to

> is greater than or equal to

> is greater than
