Lesson 2- Building Blocks of Matter Part 1- The Atom

What makes up matter?Democritus’s term “atom” is from the Greek word atomos meaning “not able to be divided.

Aristotle, another Greek philospher, disagreed with Democritus.

Think About- with your table partners, discuss why Democritus nor Aristotle did experiments to test their ideas?

ATOMS- Page 159

• The atom is the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same element.

• The atom is still considered to be the basic unit of matter because it is the smallest unit that has the chemical properties of an element.

• You cannot see individual atoms.

• There are many types of atoms that combine in different ways to make all substances.

What can you infer about atoms from this image?

Answer: I can infer that many atoms connect together to make up substances.

What can you infer from the image?

Answer: I cannot infer what the smaller particles that make up atoms look like.

What are the parts of an atom? Page 162

Protons and neutrons are found in the center of the electron cloud.

Protons- positively charged particles of atoms.

The charge of a single proton is written 1+

The mass of a proton is about 1u. U=the unified atomic mass unit.

What are the parts of an atom? Page 162

Neutrons- particles that have no electric charge.

• They are a little more massive than the protons.

• Atoms usually have as many neutrons as protons.

• Together, protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom. The nucleus is located at the center of an atom.

The Electron Cloud page 163

• The negatively charged particles of the atom are called electrons.

• Electrons move around the nucleus very quickly it is not possible to determine their exact location and speed at the same time.

• Compared with neutrons and protons, electrons have very little mass.

• The charge of a single electron is represented as 1-.

• The charges of protons and electrons are opposite but equal.

Lesson 2- Building Blocks of Matter Part 1- The Atom

How can we describe atoms? Page 164Different combinations of protons, neutrons, and electrons produce atoms with different properties. The number of each kind of particle within an atom determines its unique properties. In turn, these different atoms combine to form the different substances all around us.

BY ATOMIC NUMBER

The number of protons distinguishes the atoms of one element from the atoms of another.

The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom is the atomic number.

BY MASS NUMBER – page 165

The atoms of a certain element always have the same number of protons, but they may not always have the same number of neutrons.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.

The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus is its mass number.
