The Check-Up SETTING: A doctor’s ofce A T RISE: A young woman (LUCY) is sitting in a doctor ’s ofce examination chair, waiting for the doctor to return to the room. The DOCTOR is in the room next door, retrieving the ultrasound equipment. Lucy sits in the doctor’s chair, dgeting, as the doctor comes in, smiling. Lucy lifts up her shirt, and the doctor prepares her stomach for the ultrasound.  The doctor puts the equipment on Lucy’s small, round stomach, and starts to move it around, smiling. The doctor keeps her face steady, but her hand goes over a small bump on Lucy’s stomach. Lucy smiles up at the doctor.  The doctor stares intently at the ultrasound screen, moving the equipment more vigorously around the small bump.  Lucy furrows her brow, and tries to keep her composure. The doctor then quickly sets down the equipment, staring at the screen. Lucy waits, her panic rising.  The doctor looks at Lucy, and stares at her for about seven seconds. The doctor’s eyes start to become glassy and well up. The doctor takes Lucy’s hand in her own, and looks at her pitifully. Lucy’s face becomes ushed of all color.  She begins to breathe quickly, and starts to cry.

The Check-Up

AT RISE: A young woman (LUCY) is sitting in a doctor ’s office examination chair,

waiting for the doctor to return to the room.

The DOCTOR is in the room next door, retrieving the ultrasound equipment.

Lucy sits in the doctor’s chair, fidgeting, as the doctor comes in, smiling.

Lucy lifts up her shirt, and the doctor prepares her stomach for the ultrasound. 

The doctor puts the equipment on Lucy’s small, round stomach, and starts to move itaround, smiling.

 

The doctor keeps her face steady, but her hand goes over a small bump on Lucy’sstomach. 

Lucy smiles up at the doctor.
