LESSON 4 God’s covenant with Abraham

SUMMARY: This lesson explains how it was not easy for Abraham to believe in God’s promise, there were many difficulties. But God helps Abraham overcome his doubts, and shows him that he is always faithful to his promises. For all of us this promise of God is a covenant God made to Abraham and through Moses it is a part of our heritage of faith. God’s covenant with Abraham One day God appeared to Abram and told him that he would have many descendents like the stars in the sky. God also promised him the land to be his own. But Abram did not believe and asked God for a sign. God told him to bring a cow, a goat, a ram, a pigeon and a dove for sacrifice. Abram did what God told him. He cut the animals in two and placed the animals and birds opposite each other. Abram kept watch over the sacrifice. At sunset Abram fell into a deep sleep. When it grew dark a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch suddenly appeared and passed between the offerings. Then the Lord made a covenant with Abram to give him many descendents and the Promised Land. God changed the name of Abram now he was called Abraham and Sarai was called Sara. God promised Abraham a son he was very old and so was Sara but he believed in God’s promise. And God blessed Abraham and Sara with a boy and the named him Isaac. God named Abram – Abraham and Sarai – Sarah.  One afternoon when Abraham was 99 years old, 3 strangers 

came to him and bought the good news, “Your wife Sarah will give birth to a son.” 

When Abraham was 100 years old, Sarah gave birth to a son and they named him Isaac. God kept his promise. 

God appeared to Abram and said, “Look at the sky and try to count the stars, you will have as many 

descendants”. 

God told Abram to bring a cow, a goat, a ram, a pigeon and a dove for sacrifice. When it grew dark a smoking 

fire pot and a flaming torch suddenly appeared and passed between the offerings. Then the lord made a 

covenant saying, “I promise to give your descendants all this land”.
