Example 1:

3h = 5h – 10

-2h = -10

h = 5

3h = 5(h – 2)

Example 2:

6b – 12 = 3b + 25.5

3b – 12 = 25.5

3b = 37.5

b = 12.5

6(b – 2) = 3(b + 8.5)

Example 3:

The perimeter of a rectangle is 36 inches. Find the dimensions if the length is 2 inches greater than three times the width.

The perimeter of a rectangle is 36 inches. Find the dimensions if the length is 2 inches greater than three times the width.

l = 2 + 3w

P = 2l + 2w

36 = 2(2 + 3w) + 2w

Page 10: Lesson 7-2 Pages 334-338 Solving Equations with Grouping Symbols PA Lesson Check 7-1

Example 3:

36 = 4 + 6w + 2w

36 = 4 + 8w

32 = 8w

4 = w

36 = 2(2 + 3w) + 2w

Example 4:

4x = 4x + 1.2

0 = 1.2

Does not make sense!

The solution set is empty!

4x – 0.3 = 4x + 0.9

Example 5:

12x – 6 + 15 = 12x + 9

12x + 9 = 12x + 9

12x =12x

0 = 0

3(4x – 2) + 15 = 12x + 9

Solution set is all numbers!
