Bible VerseThere is no evil in Him. Psalm 92:15b

OverviewThe most referred attribute in the Bible is holiness. When we talk about God’s holiness, we are referring to his complete purity. God is totally separated from evil. Because He is perfect, we can trust all His other attributes such as love, justice and sovereignty. We can trust that He is good. That all His ways are good.

Dr. BeakerSupplies:

Costume for Dr. Beaker

(Dr. Beaker appears waving his arms.) My lab is a mess! I cannot believe it. After last week’s problem and the big cleanup, I thought my assistants had learned their lesson. What a mess! It was so clean and now a mess. A complete mess! Do you know what I mean by a mess? Has your room at home ever been a mess? If it has, you can imagine what my lab looks like. I am going to find my assistants and make them clean it up. I want it spotless. I want no dirt anywhere. I want no spills anywhere. I want everything in order. I want a clean lab! Speaking of clean, did you know that God is completely pure? No dirt of sin on him! No bad stuff in him! He is pure as pure can be. God has never made a bad choice. God has never sinned. I must hurry and find those assistants. But remember, God never sins!

Dr. Beaker’s LabInstaSnow

Supplies:Instasnow packet* Clear container Water

Follow the directions on the packet to make the instasnow. What can you tell me about the snow we made? It is white. It is clean. It is pure. The snow reminds me of how pure God is. He is holy. That means that He is pure. That He never does anything wrong. He has never done anything wrong.

Moving Pepper Supplies:

Small container Ground pepper Dish detergent Water

Fill the container with water.

I am going to sprinkle pepper on this water. (Sprinkle pepper on the water.) Sometimes when we see dark specks like this we can think of sin. Does anyone know what sin is? It is doing something that is God says is wrong. Lying is a sin. Yelling at your parents is a sin. Taking something that does not belong to you is a sin. Now I am going to put a drop of this dish detergent in the water. Watch closely to see what happens. (Put a dab of dish detergent on your fingertip. Dip your finger into the water. The pepper will move away.) What happened to the pepper? It moved away from the soap. Soap is clean. It is pure. God is also clean and pure. He has never done anything wrong. He cannot be close to sin because He is holy.

Goldenrod Paper Supplies:

One piece of goldenrod paper* Cotton ball Baking soda Vinegar Water

Preparation: Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with 1/2 cup of water. Dip the cotton ball in the baking soda and water and mark a big “X” on the goldenrod paper. The “X” should appear in red on the paper. What did I make on the yellow paper? A big X. We are going to pretend that the X is sin. Do you remember what I told you sin is? It is disobeying God. The Bible tells us that everyone has sinned. We all have done something wrong. What do we do about that sin? We do not want to keep that sin in our life. We can ask Jesus to forgive us. We can just say, “Jesus, I am sorry. Please forgive me.” And do you know what? He does. Take another cotton ball and dip it in the vinegar. Rub the vinegar over the word “X.” It should go back to yellow. When Jesus forgives us our sin, He gets rid of the sin just like the paper no longer has the “X” on it.

Bible StoryDavid and the Ark of the CovenantI Samuel 6 Supplies:

Box Bible Jar Frosted Flakes® Stick Poster board

Preparation: Place the Bible inside the box. Fill the jar with Frosted Flakes. Cut out a Ten Commandments tablet from the poster board. Place the jar of Frosted Flakes®, Ten Commandments tablet and Bible in the box. What do you think is inside my box? (Pass the box around and let the children shake it and guess. After everyone has had a chance to guess, open the box and pull out the Bible.)

What is this? This is the Bible. It is God’s word. Is it an important book? Yes, it is the most important book in the world. It tells us of Jesus. It tells us about God. It tells us what God wants us to do and what He does not want us to do. When David was king, they did not have a Bible like this. They had other things that helped them know God. One of those things was the Ark of the Covenant. It was also a box. But the box was very different. It was made of gold. It had golden angels on it. It had to be carried a certain way and treated very carefully. It was special. Inside the Ark of the Covenant, were three things. There was a jar of manna. (Show the jar of Frosted Flakes.) That was food that God had fed the people with when they left Egypt. There was a rod that Aaron, Moses’ brother had used. (Show the children the stick.) And there were the Ten Commandments. These were the rules that God gave Moses for the people to follow. (Show the tablet.) The rules told the people to keep God number one and to honor their parents. It told them not to steal or lie. King David knew that the Ark of the Covenant should be in Jerusalem. But it was kept somewhere else. He decided it was time to bring the ark home. Everyone had to be very careful and follow the directions that God had given them for moving the ark. David knew he could not move the ark unless he had a pure heart. David had sinned in his life. But he had asked God to forgive him. Because he had asked God to forgive him, he had a pure heart.

5

The day the Ark of the Covenant was moved, David was so filled with joy. There was a big celebration. David danced before the Lord with all his might. He took off his kingly robes and danced. He did not care what anyone thought but the Lord. As the Ark of the Covenant was moved, there was much shouting and blowing of trumpets. Can you imagine how they celebrated? When we know God and love God, we have so much to celebrate. When we have been forgiven for our sin, we can really celebrate. David loved God so much. He had been forgiven. He knew that God loved him.

PrayerThank Jesus for forgiving the children when they ask him. Perhaps also give the children an opportunity to tell Jesus they are sorry for anything that they need to be forgiven for.

Lab TimeClean Pennies

Supplies:Old, dull pennies Paper cups Lemon juice Paper towels

Put a penny in a paper cup. Pour some lemon juice into the cup. Make sure the penny is completely covered. Tell me what your penny looks like. (Dirty, old.) We are going to leave the penny in the lemon juice for 5 minutes and see what happens. (Move the children to the next experiment. After they have completed the experiments, let them return and finish this one.) What does the penny look like now? (It should be brighter.) The penny is all clean. The lemon juice cleaned the penny. Who cleans us when we sin? (God.) Does God ever get dirty and need to be cleaned? (Never, He is always pure.)

Oil and water

Supplies:Cooking oil Clear plastic cups Food coloring Tall clear container

Preparation: Pour each cup 1/2 full of water. Give each child a cup. Let them choose a color of food coloring and place a few drops in the cup. Let the children experiment pouring different colors in the tall container. In between each child’s turn, pour some oil in the container. The oil and the colored water will separate. What happened when you poured your water and I poured the oil into the container? (They should notice that the oil did not mix with the colored water.) Just like the oil and the water would not mix, God cannot mix with sin. Because He is holy, He cannot be around sin.

Changing Paper

Supplies:Goldenrod paper (cut into small pieces) Baking soda mixture (from lab demo.) Cotton swabs Paper cups Vinegar

Repeat the experiment done during the demonstration except let the children do the experiment. By using cotton swabs instead of cotton balls, you can use smaller sheets of paper.

Circle TimeWhen Jesus forgives us, we should thank him and praise him. Remember how David praised God while he danced before the ark? Let’s go around the circle and everyone think of a praise to Jesus. You can say something like “God is good.” Or “Jesus is awesome.” Or “Thank you Jesus for loving me.”

Snack

Ice Cream

Supplies:Vanilla ice cream Whipped cream Spoons Bowls

Give each child a scoop of ice cream and place a little whipped cream on top. As the children eat the snack, discuss how their snack is pure. There is nothing to make it dirty. Remind them that God is pure and that He has never sinned. There is no sin in him.

CraftCandle Holder Supplies:

Baby food jars Tea lite candles White Glue Disposable containers Paint brushes Colored tissue paper

Preparation: Cut the colored tissue paper into small squares about one inch wide. Pour the glue into the disposable containers. Have the children paint glue on the baby food jar. Place tissue paper on the glue. Continue until the entire jar is covered with paper. Paint over the tissue with the glue. Allow to dry. Place the tea lite candle inside the jar.

Discuss with the children that darkness refers to sin. With God, there is no sin, He is only light.“God is light, in Him there is no darkness at all.” I John 1:5

GamePaper Ball Sorting

Supplies:Ten sheets of white paper Ten sheets of another color paper Masking tape

Preparation: Wad up the paper into balls. Mark off a rectangular area on the floor with masking tape. Make a line down the middle with the tape. The object of the game is to try to get all the same color of paper on each side. To begin the game, mix the paper balls up and place some of each color on both sides. Divide the children into equal teams. Assign a color that each side should try to get. On go, the children should start throwing the paper balls to the other side. They must stay within the boundaries marked off.
