8 Football profiles Digital technologies

Have students design a digital profile of each player in their school football team. They should capture photos of each player posing with a football and wearing their playing uniform. They should also record (audio) their personal review of the season and source a written message from the players. Profiles should be safely shared and promoted on social media and uploaded online on the school website. Please note teachers should abide by school protocols and education department guidelines when considering the use of social media in the classroom.

Have the class to work together to create an AFL-type cheer squad banner for their school football team. Tell students that they are AFL coaches who are planning to present this weekend’s game-plan to their players at a very important team meeting. Have them decide which digital equipment i.e. interactive whiteboard, data projector, cinema screen, iPad, mobile phone etc, would be best to make their presentation. Ask them to justify their position.

Tell students that they are field reporters for a media outlet that reports on AFL football. They have captured film and photos at a news press conference and need to get it on their media website as quickly as possible. Have them provide a step-by-step sequence on how they will make this happen. In their responses students should identify the ways in which images and footage can be transferred from a mobile device to computer for post-production work.

Have students conduct a survey on which AFL team is the most popular at your school. Students are to create their survey in a digital format such as Microsoft word or Adobe PDF. Tell students that they are social media experts who are responsible for advising AFL footballers on how to safely set up and use social media accounts. In their advice to players have them consider ways of managing the use of social media to maintain privacy needs, for example activating privacy settings to avoid divulging personal data such as photographs, addresses, and names and recognising that all digital interactions are difficult to erase (digital footprints).

Tell students that they are coaches for an AFL team. They have just been told of a post on social media publicly announcing that one of their players is going to leave the club. This is news to him so what does he think and do? How reliable is a message on social media? Does he believe what is in the post? In their responses students should suggest ways in which the news could be checked for its authenticity, for example, ensuring the source or author is a reliable individual or organisation etc.
